When Huo Xueshen heard his grandson's childish voice, his eyes and brows instantly lit up with a smile. His joy seemed to be overflowing from his face. He said happily, "Ping An is back from school. Come here, let Grandpa take a good look and see if you've grown taller."
Ping An gently put down her schoolbag, took obedient steps, and walked steadily to Huo Xueshen.
Huo Xueshen quickly stood up, stretched out his hand, and carefully gestured above Ping An's head, his tone filled with satisfaction: "He's a little taller than last year."
Because of the special nature of his work, Huo Xueshen could not leave Beicheng at will. So before each break, he would call Fu Shen in advance to tell him the exact time so that Fu Shen and Su Yue could bring Ping An to Beicheng for a reunion.
Ping An grinned; after all, he was the tallest kid in the class.
In the room, Su Yue and Tian Huanyan finished their quiet conversation. Su Yue then picked up the small wooden box with both hands and told Tian Huanyan to put it away.
Tian Huanyan waved her hands repeatedly, refusing to accept the gifts. She felt it was inappropriate for him to take all the precious items as soon as she returned.
Besides, she's not married to Huo Xueshen yet, so accepting these things isn't appropriate for her status. Even if it were, she shouldn't take them all at once.
Su Yue took Tian Huanyan's hand, her eyes sincere. "Mom, according to the old traditions, what Grandma left behind should belong to you. It can't just skip you and go directly to me. Or are you not planning to live with Dad in the future?"
Tian Huanyan stared at Su Yue with a look of surprise on her face.
Su Yue held her hand tightly and said softly, "Mom, although you and Dad have been separated for a long time, I can really see that you still care about each other."
Tian Huanyan was slightly taken aback, and countless thoughts flashed through her mind: Did Huo Xueshen have feelings for her?
Back then, she pursued him relentlessly, while he desperately avoided her. Now, does he still have feelings for her?
She was filled with doubt and couldn't believe it.
Is it true that bystanders see things more clearly than those involved?
She stared intently at Su Yue, her eyes filled with anticipation and trepidation, and said, "Can you tell that he really has feelings for me?"
Su Yue said confidently, "Of course Dad cares about you. His gaze always unconsciously falls on you. Haven't you noticed?"
Having just returned by car, Huo Xueshen sat in the passenger seat, glancing back at Tian Huanyan every now and then.
Upon arriving at the military base, he made no attempt to hide his gaze as he got off the vehicle, openly staring at her without Tian Huanyan noticing.
Tian Huanyan shook her head, "I didn't find anything."
Just then, Ping An's clear knocking came from outside the door. "Mom, Grandpa said Grandma is back. Can I come in and see her?"
Su Yue glanced at Tian Huanyan, raised her voice, and said towards the door, "Come in."
Tian Huanyan knew that the little boy speaking outside the door was her grandson, whom she had never met.
She couldn't help but laugh at the thought that she had never raised a son, yet now she had a grandson.
Ping An gently pushed open the door and walked briskly toward Tian Huanyan, who was smiling. Her eyes were full of curiosity and affection. "Are you my grandma? You look so young."
Hearing Ping An's sweet words, Tian Huanyan smiled slightly and said, "You must be Ping An. Grandma has gray hair now. She's not young anymore, she's old."
Ping An tiptoed, tilted her little face up, and carefully looked at Tian Huanyan's head. Her voice was clear and crisp. "Grandma's hair is all black, there are no white hairs, and her hair even smells a little nice."
Ping An's innocent and carefree last sentence made Su Yue and Tian Huanyan burst into laughter.
Su Yue asked, "Where's Daddy?"
Ping An came home from school, and it was time to prepare dinner.
Ping An replied, "Dad and Grandpa went to cook."
Su Yue nodded gently. Since someone was cooking, she didn't need to worry about it.
Su Yue suddenly thought of Huo Xueshen's accommodation for the night and looked at Ping An, saying, "Ping An, do you want to sleep with Grandpa or in the study?"
Ping An said without hesitation, "I'll sleep with Grandpa."
That way I can take the opportunity to ask Grandpa a lot of questions.
When he encounters some profound questions, his father can't answer them, his mother doesn't know many words, and there are no explanations in the books.
He was eager to know the answer, but he was so anxious that he couldn't find a solution. His grandfather was too busy with work and often didn't have time to answer his calls.
