Chapter 592 Catching Rats

These thugs were all jealous of her making money from her shop, so they followed Lao Xing to cause trouble. Of course, she eventually found a way to deal with them all.

Later, when she helped Sister Hongyu catch Su Xueming, that poor man from a poor background, Lao Xing sent Ma Zi and Lao Liu out to help a lot.

Ma Zi quickly replied, "I dare not accept such a title from you, brother."

He would remember for the rest of his life the time they stabbed themselves in the leg.

"Sister Ning, the people you told us to keep an eye on have been keeping an eye on things." Ma Zi scratched his head, a fawning smile plastered on his face, a far cry from the arrogance he displayed when he came to "crash the party."

Ma Zi and his brothers had been lying in wait near the bulletin board of Fudan University for several days.

Ever since Sister Ning asked them to keep watch, they've been working day and night in shifts, just waiting to catch the "mice."

Ma Zi said in a low voice, "These past two days, we've spotted a suspicious figure who's always loitering around the bulletin board, but he doesn't dare get too close. He always comes and goes in a hurry, but today he's been scouting the area multiple times. He's probably up to something."

Ning Yuan pulled out a few ten-yuan bills from her pocket, stuffed them into Ma Zi's hand, and smiled brightly with her big eyes: "Then I'll have to trouble you, Brother Ma Zi. I'll treat the brothers to drinks later."

Ma Zi took the money, his eyes lighting up: "Sister Ning, you're too kind. This is nothing. We've had our sights set on this target for a long time. That 'rat' will definitely be out tonight. Just wait for our news!"

Ning Yuan smiled and said, "Oh, right, what if we run into the school security guards..."

"Don't worry, we grew up around here and know this school very well. It's not like we'll be easy to spot us." Ma Zi chuckled smugly.

He straightened his chest and patted it: "Besides, we're all law-abiding citizens, we haven't done anything wrong. Walking around the school at night is just poor and lower-middle peasants getting a taste of the university culture. Even if we run into the security guards, they can't do anything to us. Does that mean no one is allowed to walk on the school streets at night?!"

Ning Yuan listened to these old hands rambling on, but she knew they had their own abilities, so she smiled and said, "Alright, then we'll leave it to you. We'll wait for good news!"

Time passed by, and before we knew it, it was midnight.

A slightly chilly night breeze swept through the empty campus.

"Brothers, keep a close eye on things. We're closing in tonight. Don't let Sister Ning down!" Ma Zi patted his sleepy face and said to the others below.

In the stillness of the night, the campus of Fudan University was quiet, with only the dim light of the streetlights casting long shadows of the trees.

"Hey, look, isn't that the woman who was acting suspiciously the other day?" one of the henchmen said in a low voice, his eyes sharp.

Ma Zi looked in the direction his younger brother pointed and sure enough, he saw a petite figure suddenly dart out like a mouse!

She was carrying a stack of things in her hand, looking around as if checking if anyone was around, and nervously glancing back as she walked.

"Keep a close eye on her!" Pockmarked man ordered in a low voice, "Go after her as soon as she finishes applying the plaster, don't let her get away!"

After confirming that no one was around, the petite figure quickly walked to the notice board, pasted the item in her hand on it, and then hurriedly left.

"Go!" Ma Zi gave the order and led several brothers to rush out, pinning her to the ground.

"Ah!" Ding Lan screamed in fright at the sudden turn of events before she could even react.

The bucket of paste in her hand fell to the ground with a dull thud.

"Who...who are you? What do you want?" Ding Lan struggled in panic, but she couldn't break free from the grip of the burly men.

Ma Zi covered her mouth and immediately sent someone to notify Ning Yuan, who was waiting nearby.

A short while later, Ning Yuan and Chu Hongyu emerged from the nearby tree-lined path.

Ning Yuan slowly walked up to Ding Lan, looking down at her with a cold smile: "Ding Lan, long time no see. You still can't change your ways! You'll do any kind of business."

Ding Lan was startled when she saw the familiar yet unfamiliar face in front of her. She never expected that Ning Yuan would appear here!

"Ning Yuan, you... how did you get here?" Ding Lan stammered, her eyes darting around, not daring to look Ning Yuan in the eye.

Ning Yuan sneered, not answering her question, but bending down and picking up the big-character poster that Ding Lan had just put up, handing it to Chu Hongyu.

"Ding Lan! What exactly did you stick on there?!" Chu Hongyu grabbed the paper and unfolded it abruptly.

She glanced at it once, and her face instantly turned ashen.

Above, written in bright red ink, were several shocking headlines: "Like father, like daughter; the Chu family father and daughter are of despicable character and collude in evil deeds."

The poster exaggerated the story of Chu Hongyu's father being suspended from his job for "harassing a female intern at the school," and was full of malice and slander.

The text also denigrates Chu Hongyu's father and daughter's character to the point of worthlessness, implying that Chu Hongyu abuses her father's power to bully others at school and cover up her moral depravity, her snobbishness, and her framing of her ex-boyfriend.

Finally, he passionately called on everyone to unite to protect the female classmate, report the matter to higher authorities, demand the execution of Chu Hongyu's father, and the expulsion of Chu Hongyu from the school...

"Ding Lan!" Chu Hongyu suddenly raised her head, pointing at Ding Lan with icy eyes, her charming eyes filled with coldness.

"What did my father do to offend you? Why are you doing this to him? Why are you doing this to us?" Chu Hongyu's voice trembled with anger.

"Hongyu, what are you saying? I don't understand." Ding Lan suddenly put on an innocent expression, with tears glistening in her eyes, as if she were the one who had suffered a great injustice.

"I just couldn't sleep at night, so I came out for a walk. I saw someone had posted something here and wanted to see what it was. I have no grudge against you, so why would I want to hurt you?"

As she spoke, she deliberately took a few steps back, trying to keep her distance from the bucket of paste on the ground, as if something dirty on it would contaminate her.

"Taking a walk? You take paste and a brush with you on your walk?" Chu Hongyu pointed at the bucket of paste on the ground, laughing angrily. "Ding Lan, how long are you going to keep up this act? Do you dare to do it but not admit it?"

Ding Lan looked at Chu Hongyu pitifully and said, "Chu Hongyu, I know you come from a good family, are beautiful, and are good at studying. You've always been a popular figure at school, but do you have to target me like this? I'm just an ordinary student from out of town!"

"Ding Lan, stop acting here!" Chu Hongyu was so angry at Ding Lan's distorted and untrue words that she couldn't speak. She took a few steps over and slapped her across the face.

"Slap!" The crisp sound of a slap was particularly loud in the quiet night.

Ding Lan never expected to actually be slapped, and a sinister glint flashed in her eyes.

But soon, she put on a pitiful expression, covered her face, and began to sob softly.

"Hongyu, I really didn't. If hitting me will make you happier, then hit me..."

As Ding Lan spoke, she closed her eyes, looking completely helpless.
