Chapter 165 Going to the Newspaper
Falling asleep in the arms of your loved ones can lead to quality sleep and leave you feeling refreshed!
Gu Yiye and Lin Shanshan got up very early to go to the newspaper office today and ran into their grandfather, who hadn't gone to the army yet.
The old man sat at the dining table early in the morning, full of energy, and greeted Gu Yiye and Lin Shanshan:
"Ah Ye, Shan Shan, you're up? Come and have breakfast. The roast duck yesterday was delicious. Thank you for bringing it back from the capital for this old man."
Lin Shanshan smiled and said, "I'm glad Grandpa likes it. We also brought some for Uncle San, Shanhe, and Wuyang. I'll give it to you so you can take it to the troops."
The old man nodded: "Okay, no rush, you eat breakfast first."
Today's breakfast was steamed buns and pork bone and kelp soup. Gu Yiye loves spicy food, so Aunt Xiang specially added chopped chili peppers to the dipping sauce she prepared for him.
After Lin Shanshan became pregnant, she may have been influenced by the little one in her belly, and she also developed a craving for spicy food.
However, Gu Yiye didn't let her eat too much, fearing it would cause her to get a sore throat.
Today was no different. After Lin Shanshan ate two xiaolongbao dipped in chopped chili, Gu Yiye put away the dipping sauce dish.
Lin Shanshan pouted her bright red lips, a hint of dissatisfaction escaping her lips: "So stingy, they won't even let me eat chili peppers."
Gu Yiye shook his head, looking helpless, ladled out a bowl of seaweed soup, added a tiny bit of chopped chili, and placed it in front of Lin Shanshan, saying:
"My dear wife, come on, have some soup. There's chili in it now, don't be angry."
Ren Shiyou watched his grandson and granddaughter-in-law showing affection, smiling without saying a word. Young people just have such a good relationship!
After finishing the seaweed soup, Lin Shanshan used the excuse of going upstairs to get roast duck for her grandfather to sneak into the master bedroom and eat half a pack of spicy strips before she felt comfortable.
Grandpa took three roast ducks to the army base, and Gu Yiye and Lin Shanshan also went out to find a newspaper to place an advertisement.
First, I chose the People's Daily. This newspaper is available all over the country, and it's mandatory for public institutions, people's communes, and every production brigade to subscribe.
The two went to the Shanghai office of the People's Daily and found Director Wu, the person in charge.
In 1975, newspapers were not allowed to publish advertisements. This practice was not reinstated until 1979, and it was fully implemented. Therefore, 1979 is known as the first year of advertising.
When Lin Shanshan told Director Wu that she wanted to place an advertisement, she was immediately rejected.
Lin Shanshan didn't give up quickly and said, "Director Wu, actually we can't really call this an advertisement; it's just a job posting and a recruitment brochure."
"As you know, it's very difficult to get into worker-peasant-soldier universities these days. But there are so many talented young people in China. Are we just going to let them bury their talents in factories or rural areas?"
Director Wu is in his early forties and has only one son who just graduated from high school. He originally wanted to send him to a worker-peasant-soldier university, but at the last minute, someone with more connections took his spot.
My son works at a steel factory. Although the pay is good, he's not very motivated. Every day after get off work, he either carries books or makes little gadgets.
Lin Shanshan's words struck a chord with Director Wu, who asked, "What does your school mainly teach? What majors do you offer?"
Seeing a glimmer of hope, Lin Shanshan began her presentation with great enthusiasm:
"Our school is called Xinghuo University of Science and Technology. We offer many majors, such as: Bioengineering, Safety Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Chemistry, Materials Physics, Mechanical Engineering, and so on..."
Director Wu then asked, "What are the admission requirements?"
Lin Shanshan replied: "High school graduates, or those who really want to study but didn't graduate from high school, can also do so as long as they pass the entrance exam."
Director Wu then asked, "How much will the tuition be?"
National public universities do not charge tuition fees, but Lin Shanshan's university is a private one, so Director Wu cannot be so naive as to think that it will not charge tuition fees either.
Lin Shanshan told Director Wu about the tuition fee plan she had discussed with Gu Yiye the day before.
Seeing that Director Wu was hesitant, Lin Shanshan dropped a bombshell.
"Physicist Professor Deng and biologist Professor Tong will both come to our school to become professors."
Director Wu looked at the young girl, who was not yet 20 years old, in disbelief and asked excitedly, "Really?"
Before Lin Shanshan could answer, Gu Yiye blurted out:
“It’s absolutely true. Don’t think my wife is too young. She’s really dedicated to running the school. We personally went to Beijing to invite Professor Deng and Professor Tong. My wife can provide the best laboratories and experimental equipment in China.”
"Moreover, my grandfather was Ren Shiyou."
Gu Yiye didn't want to use his grandfather's name, but sometimes, he had no choice.
For example, now, upon hearing Ren Shiyou's name, Director Wu didn't ask any further questions and simply said:
"I believe you. But I'm just a small director and I can't make that decision. Please wait a moment, I'll call the headquarters in Beijing right away."
