Chapter 17 Small Wontons
The next day.
Preoccupied with planting vegetables, and also because it was her first night back in the human world after being reborn, Lin Shanshan didn't sleep very well.
I got up quietly as soon as it was dawn.
As I stepped outside, I heard noises coming from the kitchen.
Oh no, could it be that when Gu Yiye delivered meat and rice yesterday, someone saw him and he became a target for thieves?
She was too young to go, and was just about to call Chen Meili and Zeng Huihuang to come out and take a look when the person in the kitchen came out with long, straight, and strong legs.
It was Gu Yiye!
"Brother Gu?"
"Shanshan, did I wake you up? Why are you up so early?"
Gu Yiye's hands were covered in flour, and upon closer inspection, his handsome and resolute face was adorned with dark circles under his eyes.
Judging from the looks of it, he probably didn't sleep all night.
Lin Shanshan stepped forward and said, "No, I woke up on my own. Brother Gu, why are you here so early?"
Gu Yiye said indulgently, "Isn't it because I was worried that my little wife wouldn't have anything to eat? My mother-in-law told me that you can't cook, so what would you eat if I didn't come?"
Lin Shanshan pouted and retorted, "No way, I can definitely cook noodles. Also, I told you not to call me 'little wife'."
Gu Yiye was overjoyed to see his wife acting coquettishly towards him. He smiled and said, "Okay, then call her Nannan. I only called her that because no one else was around. The wontons are ready. Go wash up and you can eat them."
After washing up, the wontons were ready. The meat filling was made from pork tenderloin that I had specially saved last night.
The small wontons in the bowl were glistening and translucent, sprinkled with chopped green onions, and topped with a few blanched bok choy leaves.
It looks so appetizing.
Lin Shanshan asked, "Where did these baby cabbages come from, Brother Gu? You didn't secretly pick them from someone else's garden, did you?"
Gu Yiye flicked Lin Shanshan's forehead and said, "Your man has served in the army. He wouldn't take anything from ordinary people, not even a needle or thread, let alone vegetables."
Lin Shanshan ate a small bok choy, finding it refreshing and delicious, and asked, "It's so tasty! Where did this bok choy come from?"
Gu Yiye replied, "When I went back yesterday, Grandma Zhang gave it to me. She said I had just moved and didn't have anything at home, but her garden had lots of vegetables, so she picked a lot for me."
Lin Shanshan ate a small wonton in one bite. The skin was thin and the filling was generous. It was incredibly delicious. After eating a few, she remembered to ask Gu Yiye, "Is Grandma Zhang Secretary Zhu's mother?"
Gu Yiye ate quickly, finishing a large bowl of wontons in just a few bites. He replied, "Yes, it's her."
Lin Shanshan thought to herself: Secretary Zhu's wife is something else. She studied at a health school for a few years and now she thinks she's a city person.
He looked down on his rural mother-in-law and didn't want to live with her, so he forced Secretary Zhu to kick his mother out and build her a mud-brick house so he could live alone.
To outsiders, they claimed that Grandma Zhang simply preferred to live alone in peace and quiet.
Fortunately, Grandma Zhang was in good health and could grow her own vegetables. With the grain distributed by the brigade, she wouldn't starve to death.
But an elderly woman, whose husband died young, finally raised her only son to adulthood, get married and have children. Just when she should have been enjoying the happiness of family life, she was kicked out. It's truly heartbreaking.
Lin Shanshan was visibly downcast, and Gu Yiye probably guessed what she was thinking. He patted her head and said, "Grandma Zhang is close to my current home, so we can visit her often and keep her company. She likes lively atmospheres."
Lin Shanshan hummed in agreement and said, "I didn't expect you to be so thoughtful."
Gu Yiye was just about to display his masculine charm like a peacock spreading its tail feathers when he said, "You have so many good qualities as a man."
Before he could even finish speaking, Zeng Huihuang walked in and greeted Gu Yiye warmly: "Big brother, you're here!"
"The wontons smell so good, big brother is so kind." Zeng Huihuang said as he picked up a bowl and started eating.
Gu Yiye looked at his newly recruited underling with disdain, thinking he had no sense of propriety at all.
Zeng Huihuang didn't notice the look in his older brother's eyes that seemed to want to kill him, and continued to eat his wontons with relish.
After finishing her meal, Lin Shanshan thought she could go till the soil first and said, "Zeng Huihuang, you wait for Chen Meili to get up and then we'll go together. I'll go with Brother Gu first."
Zeng Huihuang hurriedly agreed, saying, "Okay, do you need any farm tools?"
Gu Yiye said, "Bring two hoes."
Zeng Huihuang nodded in agreement.
Lin Shanshan, carrying the seeds, followed behind the tall and muscular Gu Yiye, and got on Gu Yiye's old-fashioned bicycle. She really looked like a young wife following her husband back to her parents' home.
