Chapter 18 The situation is about to get out of control (2/2)

After saying that, she glanced at Liu Nian's basin again, unwilling to give up. She had been watching Liu Nian the whole time, so how come Liu Nian caught so many fish as soon as she left? If she had been there, she could have easily snatched a couple of fish, right?

"I was going to give you two, but it's okay if you don't like them." Liu Nian pretended to be regretful. "I'll take two more for my mom when we go back to her parents' home tomorrow, otherwise we won't be able to finish so many."

After Liu Nian finished speaking, she picked up the basin and left. Liu Xiangxiang followed behind her, hesitant to speak, and stamped her feet in regret.

Liu Nian went inside and quickly bought two large fish on her phone, listing Wang Shiguo as the recipient. The phone has a built-in recipient location system; whoever the recipient is, the package will appear in front of them.

Afterwards, Liu Nian cleaned two more fish and put the rest in a water tank to keep them, so she could take them back to her parents' home the next day when she went on her homecoming visit.

Liu Xiangxiang paced back and forth at the door, glancing at Liu Nian's house several times while pretending not to care. She was genuinely anxious and wanted to go to the riverbank to check, but she was afraid Liu Nian would laugh at her. Taking advantage of Liu Nian's inattention, she quickly picked up the basin and ran away.

When she got to the riverbank, she found it teeming with people, with not a single fish in sight. She had no choice but to return empty-handed.

Good fortune? Is Liu Nian really that lucky? Liu Xiangxiang grew increasingly angry and resentful; she refused to believe it! As long as she, Liu Xiangxiang, was alive, she would not let Liu Nian have an easy time!

The aroma of stewed fish wafted from the courtyard; you could smell it from a great distance.

Wang Xiuzhi had just gone to visit someone and didn't know what had happened. Before even entering the yard, she started cursing right there on the street.

"What a spendthrift new daughter-in-law! My son works himself to the bone every day just to earn a few work points, and you, on the other hand, eat fish and meat every day! You're being supported by your husband and still spending so much money. Our family is truly cursed to have a daughter-in-law like you!"

Wang Xiuzhi deliberately stood at the gate, yelling and putting her hands on her hips, displaying her shrewish skills to the fullest.

She wanted everyone to know that Liu Nian was not a good person for managing a household; a wife in the farmhouse who squandered money would be the subject of gossip and criticism from the whole village.

Liu Nian heard it clearly, but she didn't care. She was waiting to see Wang Xiuzhi make a fool of herself. If she knew that Wang Xiuzhi had caught the fish from the riverbank, she would be furious.

Several villagers who had just returned from the riverbank, carrying empty basins, happened to walk up to the Su family's door.

Wang Xiuzhi got even more worked up, pointing at the west wing where Liu Nian was, and said through gritted teeth, "Can you smell it? Fish stew again? All you ever do is indulge in fancy food! Do you think my son earns money easily? He doesn't know how to manage a household, and he doesn't care about his man! All he does is eat well. Today he wants fish, does he want to eat dragon meat from heaven tomorrow?!"

One of the older women said, "People who can afford to eat fish are lucky and have the right to do so. They really haven't squandered their money."

"What?" Wang Xiuzhi asked, puzzled. "What good fortune does she have? She looks like a jinx."

"Someone just caught several big carp from the river!" The man gestured and exaggeratedly said, "Someone saw them; they couldn't even fit them all in a large iron basin!"

"Aren't we lucky? If we went back, there wouldn't be anything left!"

Wang Xiuzhi's expression immediately changed. How come Liu Nian always gets all the good things?

"And you, you start cursing without even knowing what's going on. What kind of mother-in-law are you?"

The person who spoke was an elder in the village, and quite prestigious. Wang Xiuzhi was speechless and dared not say anything, feeling extremely aggrieved.

Liu Xiangxiang walked towards them from a distance, carrying an empty basin. Several people on blind dates glanced at her and said to Wang Xiuzhi, "See? Your eldest daughter-in-law didn't catch anything!"

The voice was neither too loud nor too soft, just loud enough for Liu Xiangxiang to hear clearly. Liu Xiangxiang wanted to curse, but she couldn't. She walked closer and said sarcastically, "Yes, my sister-in-law caught all the fish in one net, so of course no one else got any."

The villagers looked at each other and all showed their dissatisfaction.

Liu Xiangxiang's words were meant to incite public outrage. Didn't Liu Nian understand that good things should be shared? She took everything; of course others would have objections, especially since the river belonged to the public.

"Liu Nian should hand over all the fish!" Wang Xiuzhi narrowed her eyes and incited those around her. "How can she keep all the fish for herself? That's not fair!"

Upon hearing this, Liu Nian was furious. She was adding firewood to the earthen stove when she dusted off her hands, stood up, and went outside.

The fish in the river have always belonged to whoever catches them; they've never been contracted out. Why should she have to hand them over to the public?

There were many people standing at the entrance of the Su family's house, all of them empty-handed.

"Second daughter-in-law, you've come at the right time!" Wang Xiuzhi shouted even louder as soon as she saw Liu Nian come out of the house. "Hurry up and bring out all your fish and share them with everyone!"

Immediately someone chimed in, "Yes, you can't eat alone!"

"The river belongs to everyone, and the fish should belong to everyone too! You're taking advantage of public resources!"

“Sister-in-law, aren’t you from a cadre family? Is this all the awareness you have? You’re already full, yet you can bear to watch others go hungry?” Liu Xiangxiang’s righteous words had escalated to the level of ideological awareness.

Clearly, her words were more persuasive.

"Hand it over! Hand it over!"

...

A group of people were chanting slogans and waving their arms high, their emotions running high, and the scene seemed to be getting a little out of control.
