Zhao Daming sent people to inspect the scene and notified the police.
Zhang Cheng and his group were transporting nearly 14 million treasury bonds when they were attacked on the national highway, resulting in the deaths of five people. This was a major case of immense scale.
The Funing County Public Security Bureau immediately contacted the Jiaxing Public Security Bureau.
The incident occurred at the border of the two cities and also involved Zhang Tian, a big boss in Jiaxing.
When Zhang Jingtao, the head of the Criminal Investigation Section of the Jiaxing Municipal Public Security Bureau, received a phone call, he smashed the enamel mug in his hand on the ground with a "bang," splashing tea all over his trouser leg.
"Damn it, something really happened!" Zhang Jingtao wiped his face, his expression ashen.
The nearly 14 million treasury bonds, at the current exchange rate, are worth almost 10 million in cash.
Such a large sum of money is bound to attract desperate criminals.
Zhang Jingtao originally thought Zhang Tian wasn't stupid and would definitely keep his itinerary and destination a secret, but unexpectedly, things still went wrong.
"Have they caught him?" he asked urgently.
"...The criminals are all dead." The voice on the other end of the phone hesitated.
Zhang Jingtao was taken aback, then breathed a sigh of relief. Thankfully, the vouchers hadn't been stolen; otherwise, this case would have been suffocating him.
Right now, it's troublesome, but still within a manageable range.
With the cooperation of police in Funing and Jiaxing, the identity of the perpetrators can be ascertained, and the case should be closed. As for Zhang Cheng and his accomplices' self-defense, it's considered legitimate and not a serious matter.
Around 3 a.m., Zhang Jingtao arrived at the scene with his men.
The people from Funing County haven't arrived yet.
He waved his hand, and his police officers immediately dispersed to investigate the scene and record data.
The Funing County police finally arrived around 7 a.m.
Police from both locations tacitly agreed that neither wanted to escalate the situation, so they quickly formed a temporary task force and shared information.
At noon, someone rushed into the police station to report that Zhou Long, the owner of Xinglong Driving School, had died in his office.
Around 2 PM, another report came in that Jiang Jingtang, a well-known cement slab dealer in Jiaxing, had been murdered at home.
Jiaxing police were immediately in a panic, but failed to connect the two murders with the highway robbery.
Meanwhile, Lao San, the manager of the dance hall, upon hearing the news of Jiang Jingtang's death, immediately went to Dao Ge's place.
A small house not far from the national highway toll station.
The third brother, wrapped in a thick cotton-padded coat, plopped down opposite Brother Dao with a malicious smile on his face.
Dao Ge's heart skipped a beat, and sweat beaded on his forehead. That bastard Lao San had indeed come knocking.
His throat tightened, and he didn't know what to do.
"You all get out, Zhongming stay!" Brother Dao waved to his men.
The younger men looked at each other, asked no further questions, and gradually left the small bungalow.
Zhang Zhongming stood behind Brother Dao, looking puzzled, not understanding why Brother Dao had singled him out.
As soon as the door closed, the third brother chuckled and gave Brother Dao a thumbs-up: "Brother Dao, you've got guts."
"Third brother, what do you mean by that? I don't understand." Brother Dao tried to remain calm.
"Stop pretending!" The third brother curled his lip and leaned closer. "Last night, you just asked me for Jiang Jingtang's address, and today he's lying dead in his house. Dare to say this has nothing to do with you?"
"Third brother, this is a coincidence, do you believe it?" Brother Dao's brows furrowed.
"Hahaha, Brother Dao, do you think I'm a three-year-old?" The third brother leaned forward, his eyes piercing like needles as he stared at Brother Dao. "How about I go talk to the cops and have them invite you for tea?"
"You fucking threaten me?" Dao Ge's eyes flashed with a fierce light, and he slammed his hand on the table.
"How dare I threaten you, Brother Dao?" The third brother slowly pulled a dark pistol from his back waist, weighed it in his hand, and said, "I'm just short on cash lately. As long as I'm full, I'll keep my mouth shut."
Dao Ge's eye twitched. This bastard came prepared.
He wasn't unwilling to pay to avoid trouble. He did indeed make some extra money by helping Zhang Tian collect coupons.
But the third brother is like a wolf that can never be satisfied.
"Name your price!" Brother Dao squeezed out the three words through gritted teeth.
"Great! Fifty thousand yuan, I'll keep this to myself."
"Fuck your mother!" Brother Dao suddenly stood up, pointing at Lao San's nose and cursing, "Are you blinded by greed? You're asking for 50,000? If I had 50,000, would I still be stuck in this godforsaken place? Two thousand, take it or leave it!"
"Two thousand? Are you trying to fob me off like a beggar?" the third brother sneered. "Brother Dao, I'm not unreasonable. Here's what we'll do: you give me an IOU, and I'll pay you back five thousand every month, until it's all paid off in a year."
"That would be 60,000?"
"When a brother borrows money, there has to be some interest, right?"
"Impossible!" Brother Dao refused outright. Where was he supposed to get five thousand a month?
"Is there really nothing to discuss?" The third brother's eyes turned cold.
"You're asking for the moon, how are we supposed to negotiate?"
Zhang Zhongming stood silently to the side, his brows slightly furrowed. What could have made the third brother treat Brother Dao like this?
Why did Brother Dao keep me here? Didn't Brother Dao go to see some kind of "Errenzhuan" performance last night? How come Lao San said that Brother Dao went to his place to ask about Jiang's address?
His mind was a bit confused.
Just then, the door creaked open.
Two police officers in uniform walked in.
The third brother's expression changed slightly, and he subtly tucked the gun back into his waistband.
The police officer, holding a notebook, didn't notice his subtle movements.
"Officer, is there something you need?" Brother Dao quickly forced a smile and went to greet him.
"Were you all on duty here last night?"
"Yes, yes, yes!"
Zhang Zhongming listened, and when he heard that someone was robbing a truck on the national highway, his eyes suddenly narrowed.
Last night, just as Dog Brother and his group were leaving Jiaxing, Jianhao was still sitting in the car, waving goodbye to him from afar.
Could it be that Brother Dao asked Lao San about Jiang's whereabouts because of Brother Gou?
