"Ming Shen, you can't say that, I won't let you say that!" Lin Meizhi threw herself into his arms and shook him.
Wei Mingshen gently pushed her away and said, "Don't let anyone see this, especially your father. He'll beat me. Let's go home. I'm going home too."
"Ming Shen! Do you really not want me anymore?" Lin Meizhi shouted.
Wei Mingshen frowned. "Heh, you're shouting my name right at your door?"
Sure enough, he soon heard her dog barking, accompanied by messy footsteps. He got on his bike and sped off into the night.
From behind came Lin Meizhi's mother's cursing voice, "Which stray dog or cat came to my house to steal food? Don't they even know their place and deserve to be in my house?"
Wei Mingshen gave a cold laugh.
He suddenly felt that Lin Meizhi's behavior just now was really annoying and brainless, as if she had deliberately provoked that barrage of insults.
He subconsciously thought: Su Xueli wouldn't do that under these circumstances.
"What is she doing now? Is she staying at her rented room today?" He suddenly stopped his speeding bicycle and asked himself.
Why are you still asking? Go and see for yourself.
He turned his bicycle around and sped towards the small courtyard where Su Xueli rented.
Because of his previous experience of being scolded by her father, he was more cautious. He first listened carefully to the sounds inside from the outside. After confirming that there was no talking, he touched the courtyard gate. It was locked from the inside, which meant that the people inside were getting ready to sleep. That meant her parents weren't home.
He gently knocked on the door, and then heard the dog bark in response, a bark full of intimidation. He was annoyed and thought to himself, "I'll get you sooner or later."
Then Su Xueli's melodious voice was heard: "Who is it?"
"Sydney." He was so excited that his voice trembled slightly.
It's only been a short time since he last saw me... He himself felt that he was pathetic.
"You should leave now, my mother is here," Su Xueli whispered to him from behind the gate.
"Who's outside? Is it him?!" Liu Fengying's angry shout followed.
"Holy crap!" Wei Mingshen jumped back several steps in shock.
“Mother, it wasn’t him. It was someone asking for directions. I’ve already sent him away.”
"What are you asking for directions for? What kind of nonsense is this, asking for directions in the middle of the night? Open the door and let me see if it's some brat." Liu Fengying stormed towards the courtyard gate.
Wei Mingshen had already hopped on his bicycle and sped away.
He pedaled hard for a while before finally stopping, panting and wiping the sweat from his brow. He chuckled to himself, "I didn't check the almanac before I left home today, and I've messed with one mother after another..."
Su Xueli opened the door confidently after he left, saying, "Look, look, see if it's him."
Liu Fengying walked to the courtyard gate and looked around the alley. Only after finding that there was no one there did she go up to the courtyard gate and return to the house with her daughter.
Su Xueli sat down again to do straw weaving, and Liu Fengying sat down next to her to cut thatch for her. She didn't cut it well, and Su Xueli always complained to her.
Liu Fengying instructed her again, "Remember this, you are not allowed to have any contact with him again. Your father will make a big fuss if he finds out."
Su Xueli readily agreed, "I understand, Mother. Is your daughter stupid? Even if your daughter is stupid, Da Huang isn't stupid. Da Huang's mother, Old Huang, is very shrewd."
