As he spoke, he bent down, lifted her up, and placed her on the chair next to him, like he was carrying a chick.
Su Xueli laughed so hard she could barely breathe. Once she could finally speak, she shared the story of that interesting soul with him.
But she talked while she was making straw weaving, and Wei Mingshen listened while she was dyeing the fabric.
They say there was a man in their village who was the third oldest in his family and had a big head, so they nicknamed him "Big Head." This man left behind two sleepwalking stories that will be passed down from generation to generation in Peach Blossom Village.
The first sleepwalking story is about plowing.
He's a workaholic; he wants to finish any work in the fields as soon as possible, and he can't sleep well at night if he doesn't finish.
That day, he hadn't finished plowing one plot of land, and since it was getting dark, he had to call it a day and go home, planning to plow it again the next day.
But in the middle of the night, he got up, pulled the ox out of its trough, harnessed it to the plow, and took it to the field.
Then, they drove the oxen and held the plow to plow the remaining plot of land.
After plowing the field, he led the ox home, took it to the cowshed, put the plow in the tool shed, and then went back inside to sleep.
The next morning, he woke up feeling unbearable pain in his arms and legs, so he ate breakfast before going to plow the field. When he drove the ox and plow to the field, he found that the field had already been plowed.
He was horrified. There were people stealing money and grain, and even people stealing land to plow.
The three men were completely bewildered. The more they thought about it, the more confused they became. They led the ox home, unloaded the plow, and simply ran to the street, shouting at the top of their lungs, "Who plowed my land! Who plowed my land!"
Wei Mingshen interjected, "We haven't even finished plowing our own land yet, who's going to plow yours?"
Su Xueli casually replied, "That's right."
Wei Mingshen gave a wicked smile.
Su Xueli continued speaking, completely unaware of what was happening.
The three men yelled for a long time but no one answered them. Then his mother came over, grabbed him, and scolded, "You brat, what are you yelling about? Didn't you get up in the middle of the night to plow our land? I was sleeping when I heard the noise, and I saw you leading the ox out, harnessing it to the plow, and going out through the window. When I asked you, you said you were going to plow the land."
You returned with the ox just before dawn, unloaded the plow, and went inside to sleep.
You bastard, I thought you were up plowing the field because you couldn't sleep, but who knew you were having a fit of hysteria.
The three men were dumbfounded, and then the onlookers burst into laughter. From then on, his story of plowing the fields while in a hysterical state became famous throughout the village.
Wei Mingshen smiled and said, "I've heard of that too."
Su Xueli exclaimed in surprise: "It's even reached your village!"
"Have you heard the story about him grinding flour in the middle of the night?"
Wei Mingshen shook his head.
Su Xueli then moved on to the next story.
This happened later, after the town had electricity and a flour mill was installed.
The three men ran out of flour, but there were many flour mills in town, so they couldn't get in line and had to bring the wheat back home.
But he had another episode of hysteria in the middle of the night, so he carried the flour onto his cart and drove it to the flour mill in town.
When he arrived, he knocked on the door of the miller's room. The miller was woken up and was very annoyed, so he cursed at him. He gave the miller a cigarette and said a lot of nice things, saying, "Look, I've already brought the wheat here. Can you let me take it back? Please, have mercy and mill it for me. I'll make sure you have five sons and two daughters, and all your sons will become officials, and all your daughters will marry city people," and so on.
In the end, the man couldn't take it anymore, so they ground the flour for him. After grinding it, he took the flour home, poured it into the flour jar, and went to sleep.
