"I'm here, you can't run away!" Wei Mingshen came out of the toilet.
He had a cigarette dangling from his mouth, looking both roguish and handsome.
Seeing that his daughter-in-law was so anxious when she couldn't see her son, Cao Maizi laughed heartily and said, "He just went to the toilet and you came in. He started looking for you as soon as he couldn't see you for a moment."
Su Xueli quickly explained, "No, Mother, I'm not looking for him..."
"Not looking for me? Then who were you looking for just now?" Wei Mingshen asked.
Su Xueli was stumped by the question. Her face flushed red as she lowered her head and walked into the house, leaving behind the words, "Hurry up!"
She went inside to tidy up, and when she came out, she saw Wei Mingshen already waiting for her in the yard with his bicycle.
Cao Maizi, unaware of what was going on, asked, "What are you two doing in town now?"
Su Xueli was unsure how to answer when Wei Mingshen said, "Go take a shower!"
Cao Maizi said "Oh," and muttered under her breath, "You young people are so obsessed with cleanliness. You just took a bath a few days ago and you're taking another one..."
Wei Mingshen rode his bicycle with Su Xueli on the back towards the town. Neither of them said a word to each other. When they arrived at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Bureau, Wei Mingshen did not stop but rode straight in.
Su Xueli had to remind him, "It's time to get off the bus. This is a government building; there are rules to follow."
Wei Mingshen continued riding with an indifferent expression, until he stopped in front of a dormitory and propped the bike up in place.
He waved to Su Xueli and said, "Let's go."
Seeing his familiar manner, Su Xueli asked, "Do you know where the divorce office is?"
He simply said, "I know."
"Hey, Lao Wei, sister-in-law, what brings you here?" A young man in the office greeted them as soon as he saw them.
Su Xueli then remembered that one of his comrades worked at the Civil Affairs Bureau.
"Hello," Su Xueli nodded to him in greeting.
Wei Mingshen replied to his comrade: "We're here to get a divorce, please hurry up."
His comrade's eyes widened like Zhang Fei's.
Wei Mingshen pulled Su Xueli to sit on a chair in front of the counter, asked her to take out her marriage certificate and put it on the counter, and said, "Our marriage is not going well, and we both agree to divorce."
Su Xueli followed his lead and said, "Our marriage is not harmonious, and we both agree to divorce."
His comrade asked in a low voice, "Are you serious or joking?"
"Is this some kind of joke?" Wei Mingshen said, looking directly into his comrade's eyes.
Su Xueli said, "Comrade, we would never joke about divorce. Our marriage was a game from the start, and now it's time to end it."
Wei Mingshen's comrade-in-arms no longer thought this was a joke. He glanced at Wei Mingshen and smiled meaningfully: "You really are a romantic."
Wei Mingshen said with a stern face, "Don't add your own drama, it's not what you think. Of course, you can think whatever you want, just get us a divorce right away."
His comrade-in-arms, sitting behind the counter, said, "Even if both parties agree, we still have to follow the procedures; we have to mediate."
“We will not accept mediation,” Su Xueli said decisively.
“We will not accept mediation,” Wei Mingshen said firmly.
His comrade looked at Wei Mingshen for a moment and said, "Come back tomorrow."
After saying that, he got up and left the office with them.
Once outside, the two men huddled in a corner and whispered to each other, while Su Xueli stood quietly to the side, waiting.
Wei Mingshen said goodbye to his comrade and walked towards Su Xueli. His comrade went back to the office.
"You'll get the divorce certificate tomorrow, you're free," Wei Mingshen said to Su Xueli.
Su Xueli let out a long breath and quietly said to him, "You've worked hard."
