Chapter Thirty-Eight: A Door-to-Door Visit

The moment Tao Ying spoke, she put several pieces of meat into Wang Chunni's bowl.

"Grandma, Mom, I understand." Wang Chunni blushed slightly.

I know there's enough meat, but I just keep thinking that if I eat less, they can have one more meal.

"Wang Baoshan, you're heartless too. Your sister treats you so well, and all you do is shut yourself in your hole and eat your fill." Zhou Daya pointed at Wang Baoshan and started cursing.

"Just like the black-hearted roots of your Wang family, how could you be reborn before your grandfather even died?" Zhou Daya was furious just thinking about how her husband had snatched the meat from her bowl that night.

"Chunni, you must remember, as long as you can endure hardship, you will always have hardship to endure." Tao Ying sighed.

"Mom, scolding the child during dinner will affect his appetite. Let's go rest first, and we'll scold Zhang the matchmaker tomorrow." Tao Ying didn't want to stay any longer either.

"Look at you two... you're as skinny as monkeys. Eat more, or people will think I'm abusing you." Zhou Daya grumbled as she went back to her room.

Grandpa Wang immediately followed, afraid that if he walked too slowly, his wife would complain again.

There's just too much to say. If my wife weren't home, my life would be so much more comfortable.

Sigh, I dare not think about it, I dare not think about it.

"Sister, eat more." After everyone left, Wang Baoshan put a few more pieces of meat on Wang Chunni's plate.

"Baoshan, I've made you get scolded too." Wang Chunni said somewhat embarrassedly.

"It's alright, it won't interfere with my eating or drinking. If my mom and grandma could scold me and I could eat big bones and braised pork, I'd rather be scolded every day," Wang Baoshan said nonchalantly.

Wang Chunni “…”

The next morning, when Tao Ying got up, Zhou Daya had already watered the vegetable garden and Grandpa Wang had swept the yard.

"Dad, Mom, why are you two up so early?" Tao Ying was taken aback.

"Do you think everyone is as lazy as you? When are you going to start cursing?" Zhou Daya refused to admit that she was in a hurry to make money.

"Mom, I'll give you money for five days first. We'll go after we finish breakfast." Tao Ying took out ten yuan and handed it to Zhou Daya.

“Okay, I’ll go ask Chunli to make breakfast.” Zhou Daya immediately put the money away happily.

Grandpa Wang stared longingly at the ten yuan, not daring to utter a sound.

Before Zhou Daya could call out, Wang Chunni had already come out.

"Mom, what are you making for breakfast?" Wang Chunni asked Tao Ying.

"Your second aunt brought a lot of vegetables, including chives. You can stir-fry them with eggs this morning, so your grandparents will have more flavor and energy when they're scolding you. Also, boil four eggs for you, Yangyang, and your grandparents to eat. From now on, boil four eggs every morning," Tao Ying said happily.

"Mom... I understand." Wang Chunni was about to say that she didn't need to eat eggs, but Tao Ying glared at her and she swallowed the rest of her words.

So the family's breakfast consisted of sorghum porridge, steamed buns made from a mixture of wheat and water, stir-fried eggs with chives, and smashed cucumber.

"Mom, eat more." Tao Ying put a big mouthful of chives on Zhou Daya's plate.

"Chunni, eat less of this chives, or you'll upset your master," Tao Ying said to Wang Chunni.

Wang Baoshan paused for a moment before picking up a large mouthful of chives, then began to eat them with relish.

Wang Chuntao didn't care, since she couldn't smell it anyway.

Tao Ying didn't eat much either.

After breakfast, Tao Ying, along with Zhou Daya, Grandpa Wang, and Wang Chunli, went to Zhang the matchmaker's house.

Zhang, the matchmaker, lived in a tenement building, sharing a small apartment of about 60 square meters with her family of more than ten people on the first floor.

Tao Ying handed the stool she was carrying to Wang Chunli and went over to knock on the door of Zhang the matchmaker's house.

The group arrived early, a little after seven, just as people were getting ready to leave for work.

Zhang, the matchmaker, had long since passed her job to her daughter-in-law, who now spends her days at home taking care of the children.

He could only go to work as a matchmaker and bridge ditcher at night when his son and daughter-in-law came home.

Hearing the knock on the door, Zhang the matchmaker was a little surprised, but she still went to open it.

Zhang the matchmaker had just finished cooking breakfast and hadn't put on makeup yet, so her face was droopy and her skin was dark and spotted.

Tao Ying glanced at it but didn't quite recognize it, while Zhang the matchmaker recognized Tao Ying first.

"Sister Tao, are you going back on your word, sis..."

"Mom, it's her." Tao Ying interrupted Zhang the matchmaker, stepped back, and revealed Zhou Daya behind her.

"Fuck you #%φ&&φ%*..." Old Mrs. Zhou immediately started cursing.

Especially with the strong smell of chives in his mouth, along with a few specks of saliva, he completely baffled Zhang the matchmaker.

The matchmaker's son, daughter-in-law, and grandson all came out of the house at once.

Upon seeing this, Zhou Daya plopped down on the ground. "They're hitting me! That heartless bastard wants to sell my daughter-in-law and even beat this old woman! My poor son, you've only just left, and someone's already eyeing your life-saving money..." Zhou Daya cried and cursed at the same time.

His speech was incredibly clear and his voice was incredibly loud.

In no time, the area outside the door was crowded with onlookers.

Why bother going to work? Nothing beats this.

"Sister Tao, what are you doing? Just say what you have to say. The ground is cold, and you'll make the old lady sick again." Zhang the matchmaker was used to big scenes and was scolded several times a month, so she quickly said to Tao Ying.

"You dare to curse me?! You heartless bastard..." Zhou Daya continued to curse.

"Mom, the ground is cold. You can sit here and scold them. I'm going to work. If any of them dare to lay a hand on you, we'll call the police." Tao Ying considerately handed a small stool to Zhou Daya.

Grandpa Wang didn't say anything, he just sat down next to Grandma, blocking the doorway completely, so that no one in the family could get out.

Wang Chunli didn't go over; she just stood at a distance to stop her grandparents from being bullied.

Tao Ying went to work in a good mood, and when she returned home in the evening, her grandparents were already there.

"Mom, you've worked hard," Tao Ying said with a smile.

“Those two are shameless. I cursed them all day, but no one got angry.” Zhou Daya’s voice was a little hoarse.

"Are you tired? How about taking a day off tomorrow?" Tang Ying quickly brewed the newly bought dried sea buckthorn for Zhou Daya.

"That won't do. I've already taken the money, and I'm not going to return it to you." Zhou Daya immediately covered her pocket and looked at Tao Ying warily.

"I won't make you pay back the money, I'll see if you can keep your voice from getting hoarse." Tao Ying was extremely helpless.

“Am I the kind of person who takes money and doesn’t do anything? I can’t possibly do this.” Zhou Daya said with an air of righteous indignation.

"Eldest daughter-in-law, your mother and I probably won't be able to get in the door tomorrow, so there's no need to scold us so harshly. Don't worry, your mother and I know what we're doing," Grandpa Wang explained cheerfully to Tao Ying over the phone.

"What sense do you have? I'm the one who did all the work. You're just a good-for-nothing." Zhou Daya rolled her eyes at the old man.

She felt that the old man was just using her to make money.
