Chapter Thirty-Nine: Going to the Police Station

"If you can't get inside, it'll be too sunny outside." Tao Ying was amazed by the old lady's ambition.

"Why bother with sunbathing? We'll just stay at the entrance of the building, and if we get angry, we'll curse a bit. We mainly just chat with the neighbors," Zhou Daya said nonchalantly.

"Okay, Mom, I trust you to handle things." Tao Ying didn't say anything more.

Wang Chunli made a stew for dinner, which included leftover braised pork from yesterday. It was just as delicious, and Tao Ying accidentally ate too much again.

Tao Ying gave Wang Chunli twenty yuan. "Chunli, take this money. You can buy vegetables starting tomorrow. Otherwise, we won't be able to buy meat when Chun Tao gets out of school. Our family needs to make sure we have at least one meat dish a day. If you run out of money, just ask your aunt for more."

“Okay, I’ll keep the books and report the expenses to you, Auntie.” Wang Chunli hesitated for a moment at first, but when she saw that Wang Chuntao didn’t seem unhappy, she didn’t stand on ceremony.

After two days here, I've come to realize that my aunt isn't stingy.

“Okay, Chun Tao, you two can go over the accounts later. You can discuss together what to eat and what vegetables to buy the next day. This money is only for buying meat, vegetables, and some seasonings. If you can save any money without lowering your quality of life, consider it your pocket money,” Tao Ying said cheerfully.

The price of pork is currently fluctuating between 60 cents and one dollar. For a family of several people, this amount of money is not much.

"Don't feel pressured. Even if it's not enough, just show me the ledger and I'll give you more," Tao Ying added.

“If any of you want to eat something, you can pay for them to add more dishes,” Tao Ying said, then looked at the others.

Zhou Daya quickly clutched her pocket tightly. "What else do you want to eat if you only have one meat dish a day? Do you want to eat dragon meat? If you get hungry, what will you do when you go home tomorrow?"

“Dad, Mom, you two can stay here indefinitely. This is your home too, it’s not like there’s no room.” Tao Ying didn’t object to Zhou Daya and her husband. The elderly couple were hardworking and didn’t cause any trouble.

"What are you plotting against me now? We agreed that I won't stay any longer. We'll go back together once you've settled this matter." Zhou Daya instantly exploded.

"Okay, okay, whatever you say. Mom, what kind of clothes do you want to make? I have a day off the day after tomorrow, shall we go to the state-run store to take a look?" Tao Ying thought the old lady was quite interesting.

"What kind of company is this? They've only just started work and they're already giving us a holiday. You think we can just go like that? I'm just a guy who takes orders." Zhou Daya tried hard to suppress the corners of her mouth from turning up.

I was thinking of going back and bragging to my group of old girlfriends.

“Okay, then it’s settled.” Tao Ying could easily see through Zhou Daya’s little scheme.

Actually, elderly people are just like children; they just want you to pay attention to them.

However, things didn't go as planned. The next day at noon, Wang Chunli came to find Tao Ying and said, "Auntie, my grandpa and grandma have been taken away by the police." Wang Chunli was very panicked.

"What's going on? Don't worry, we'll talk as we walk." Tao Ying asked Liu Jing to ask the director for leave for her, and then took Wang Chunli and hailed a donkey.

“It was that matchmaker who called the police, saying that my grandparents were affecting her family’s normal life,” Wang Chunli said, wiping away her tears.

"Did your grandpa and grandma do anything?" Tao Ying was afraid that the old lady would get agitated and get beaten again.

“No, my grandma just lay down on the ground, and my grandpa got into the police car by himself,” Wang Chunli answered softly.

"Then why are you crying? Did they hit you?" Tao Ying couldn't understand.

“You’re already in the police station, can’t you still cry?” Wang Chunli said, tears welling up again.

"You can cry, you can cry." Tao Ying quickly and gently helped wipe away her tears.

“Aunt, I didn’t cry on purpose. My grandpa and grandma didn’t cry either.” After Tao Ying comforted her, Wang Chunli threw herself into Tao Ying’s arms and cried.

"Don't worry, your auntie is here for you." Tao Ying gently patted Wang Chunli's back.

After crying for a while, Wang Chunli calmed down and somewhat embarrassedly got out of Tao Ying's arms.

"I was just a little scared when I saw the police car," Wang Chunli said somewhat embarrassedly.

"It's okay, we're not doing anything bad, there's no need to be afraid of the police," Tao Ying gently coaxed.

"Why don't you stay inside for a while?" Tao Ying said, seeing the child crying so pitifully.

“That won’t do. I can’t let you face this alone.” Wang Chunli wiped away her tears, her eyes full of determination.

"Good, good child." Tao Ying's lips curled up slightly.

When they arrived at the police station, Tao Ying pulled Wang Chunli along and noticed that the girl's palms were sweaty, but even so, the girl did not back down at all.

As soon as she stepped through the door, she heard Zhou Daya's loud crying. Tao Ying immediately pinched her thigh hard. Before the tears could come out, she forced a few yawns and forced the tears to come out.

"Mom, Mom!" Tao Ying ran inside, her voice trembling with tears.

Wang Chunli immediately panicked, tears streaming down her face, her legs trembling as she followed him inside.

After the two went inside, they saw several police officers comforting Zhou Daya. Old Master Wang sat quietly to the side, occasionally wiping away Zhou Daya's tears with a handkerchief.

Zhang the matchmaker sat to one side, with her people nearby.

"Did you hit my mother? I'll fight you to the death!" Tao Ying shouted, charging straight at Zhang the matchmaker and grabbing her hair hard.

Tao Ying actually wanted to slap him in the face, but that would have a bad influence, especially since it was at the police station.

"Comrade, please calm down." Several police officers tried to separate Tao Ying and Zhang the matchmaker.

“Police officers, this is too much! My husband just passed away, and she came to our door... Now she’s even bullying my mother-in-law. I don’t want to live anymore…” Tao Ying took the hair off her hand and cried loudly.

"Eldest daughter-in-law..." Zhou Daya cried loudly as soon as she saw the friendly forces arrive, hugging Tao Ying.

The police officers were immediately at their wits' end.

After crying for about a minute, Zhou Daya secretly tugged at Tao Ying's clothes, thinking to herself, "This silly child, that's enough, you're tired of crying."

"Mom, let's not cry anymore. The police are here. They will definitely stand up for us, the vulnerable." Tao Ying received the signal and gently wiped away Zhou Daya's tears.

When Zhou Daya was handed to Tao Ying, she was momentarily stunned. Then, seeing Tao Ying's eyes and hearing the voice soothing the child, she couldn't help but shudder, thinking, 'After all these years, my eldest daughter-in-law is still so disgusting.'

"Yes, yes, yes, ma'am, let's talk this out." The police officer quickly spoke up, already somewhat regretting calling the police and bringing back such a troublesome person.

"Officer, what's going on? My parents are old and have just lost their son, so they're quite vulnerable. Please tell me what's wrong." Tao Ying gently helped Zhou Daya up and slowly sat her down on a stool.
