Perhaps finding Xu Xinchen's question amusing, the man showed no respect whatsoever, letting out a cold laugh with a face full of sarcasm.
"If it weren't for the money, who would be willing to do this kind of dangerous job? Do you think anyone would choose to live a life where they could die any day?"
Xu Xinchen originally meant no harm, but after hearing what this man said, she felt a surge of anger for no reason: "There are plenty of jobs in the world. Can't you do something else and find a proper job? Why do you have to do this kind of thing?"
After listening to Xu Xingchen's words, the man's face showed a sullen expression, and he circled around Xu Xingchen a few times: "Hearing you say that, I know you must not have suffered much. Do you think there are so many ways to make money in a short time? No one would be willing to do this kind of thing unless they were forced to.
As he spoke, the man, as if afraid of revealing too much about himself, stood up decisively, threw the white gauze he was holding in front of Xu Xinchen, and said condescendingly.
"I've already applied the medicine for you. You can take care of the rest yourself. I see that your hand can still move, so it's not completely useless. You can bandage your wound without any problem."
After saying that, the man immediately walked away without looking back. Xu Xinchen sat there watching the man's back, blinked, and after a long while, finally reached out and picked up the piece of gauze that the man had thrown on the ground.
Despite the pain in her wrist, she held the white gauze in one hand and bit the other end with her mouth, rolling it around her hand again and again.
The man hadn't been gone long; while Xu Xinchen was still wrapping the bandage around her neck, he returned carrying another bowl of steaming porridge.
Seeing Xu Xinchen struggling to bandage his wound, the man's face showed a faint smile, but he quickly covered it up again.
He carried the bowl of steaming hot porridge to Xu Xinchen, put the porridge on the ground, took the gauze from Xu Xinchen's hand, and unwrapped the gauze that Xu Xinchen had just managed to roll up.
Xu Xinchen was stunned. Seeing the man untangle the bandages she had painstakingly wrapped, she instantly became angry, her eyes turning red as she stared at him: "What are you doing? Do you know how hard it was for me to get this done? How could you just take it off like that?"
The man scoffed, "You've gone to all that trouble to make your hands look like a garbage dump, and you're quite proud of it?"
Xu Xinchen blushed instantly and lowered her head shyly. Indeed, the bandage she had put on herself was not good-looking at all. No, it should be said that it was extremely ugly. The gauze was crooked and did not lie flat on her hands at all.
Seeing that Xu Xinchen finally lowered her head and stopped talking, the man glanced at her with a slight smile in his eyes. He then straightened the crookedly wrapped gauze and rolled it back up for Xu Xinchen.
Xu Xinchen looked at the newly bandaged wound and a smile began to appear on her face. Although this man was doing such a low-class thing, he seemed to have a good heart.
The thought that she still didn't know what had happened to her made Xu Xinchen's mind start to wander.
She was moved and wanted to ask the man something: "Can I ask you something?"
To Xu Xinchen's complete surprise, the man's smile vanished immediately after hearing her words, replaced by a cold expression.
"No, I've already said it. You just need to stay here quietly and don't think about anything else or push your luck."
Xu Xinchen was taken aback, a hint of disappointment creeping into her heart. However, seeing the man's intimidating expression, she could only swallow hard, lower her head, and sigh helplessly.
"Fine, I won't ask then, but you have to tell me how long you're going to keep me locked up, and what awaits me next: will you kill me or let me go home?"
The man frowned deeply, and his gaze towards Xu Xinchen was filled with complex emotions. He did not answer Xu Xinchen's question, but instead began to tidy up the medicine powder and other items scattered on the ground.
After putting everything back into the small box, he stood up and slowly walked towards the door, stopping just before he reached it.
Xu Xinchen couldn't see the expression on his face, but she could hear a tremor in his voice: "I don't know, I don't know what will happen to you next. I'm just following orders. Don't ask so many questions. Just eat what you have."
Xu Xinchen's heart sank with a jolt; it seemed she was likely in grave danger. She opened her mouth, wanting to ask more questions, but the man didn't give her the chance, simply picking up the first-aid kit and walking out.
As she stepped completely out of the room, Xu Xinchen saw him close the door behind him, followed by a thud.
He came over, and the door was completely locked.
Xu Xinchen was greeted by complete silence once again. She narrowed her eyes, pressed her back against the wall, and forced herself to calm down. She absolutely could not panic at this moment.
She didn't know how much time had passed, but then she heard a rumbling sound from her stomach. Xu Xinchen slowly opened her eyes and looked at the bowl of lean meat porridge on the ground, which had long since gone cold.
She slowly bent down and picked up the bowl of porridge, eating it bit by bit. No matter what, the most important thing now was to conserve her energy; only with energy could she think about anything else.
After finishing the entire bowl of porridge, Xu Xinchen looked at the empty bowl with a thoughtful expression in her eyes. She lowered her head and looked at the rope tied to her leg.
She stretched out her bandaged hands and placed them on the rope around her feet, trying to untie the knots little by little.
It's unclear whether it was because the rope was tied too tightly by the group of people, or because her hand was injured and she didn't have much strength, but after struggling with the rope for a long time, she still couldn't untie the knot.
Instead, she ended up panting heavily. She bent over, pressed her entire back against the white wall, and stared intently at the ceiling.
