Chapter 210 We Won't Go With You
The woman didn't leave.
They even pulled the little boy along and hid behind two senior leaders from the investment promotion office.
Sister-in-law Yao looked on with amusement and laughed, "Secretary Zheng, look how scared you've made him."
"We won't go with you."
The woman licked her chapped lips and said to the two senior leaders, "I'm afraid you'll send us back to the Northeast. It's too cold there; we'll starve and freeze to death. Leaders, I'm telling you the truth. I know Zheng Huaixin has remarried, but we're not divorced at all. I... I still have our marriage certificate..."
The news exploded like a bomb.
Zheng Huaixin's head buzzed, and he felt completely disoriented.
Seeing the woman reach into her bag, and remembering the photo from earlier, his breathing quickened, and he felt an urge to tear the marriage certificate she had taken out to shreds.
But when he saw the marriage certificate the woman took out, his heart strangely calmed down.
The reason was simple: the marriage certificate the woman presented was brand new.
"Liar, I've been back in the city from the countryside for over ten years. Even if I had a marriage certificate, it would be a tattered one," Zheng Huaixin said calmly, feeling confident that the woman and the little boy were indeed liars.
Unexpectedly, the woman burst into tears, and the little boy pointed at Zheng Huaixin and said, "We showed you photos of you and my mother, but you didn't recognize us. You wouldn't recognize us without a marriage certificate either. Auntie said we'd get another one made. This isn't fake; it was made later!"
"Stone, stop talking. You'll need him to establish yourself in Beijing in the future. Don't say things that he'll hold a grudge against you." The woman covered the boy's mouth and looked at the two old leaders pleadingly.
The old leader couldn't bear it, so he went to see the top leader, who looked displeased. He then looked at Zheng Huaixin.
Zheng Huaixin took a slight breath and said, "Leaders, I really don't have a son, and I don't know why she insists on pinning this on me!"
He frowned and stared at the woman. "Aren't you afraid that if they find out, I'll send you all to jail? I can sue you for spreading rumors and defaming my reputation."
"Go check it out."
The woman wiped away her tears, clenching her bony fists, "We're not afraid of your investigation."
"Can't we do DNA paternity testing now? Secretary Zheng, why don't you go with this little boy to get one? You'll know if he's your son just by taking a blood test," Sister-in-law Yao suggested from the side.
Zheng Huaixin was certain the child wasn't his own. He glanced at Sister-in-law Yao and thought the idea was feasible.
He then approached the top leader with an upright demeanor and said, "Leader, I am upright and have nothing to fear. I will do the paternity test. I humbly request your approval."
The top leader paused for a moment, glanced at him, then turned to look at the two senior leaders of the investment promotion office and said with a smile, "If it really is a misunderstanding, it is indeed good to investigate it thoroughly. We can't give those who want to do bad things in secret the opportunity to ruin such a good comrade, right?"
The two senior leaders exchanged a glance and nodded in agreement.
Sister-in-law Yao glanced at the woman.
The woman, holding the child, said, "It's fine, he's your child, you can investigate him however you want."
Zheng Huaixin found it absurd.
He doesn't have a son at all!
Did he think that by finding a little boy who looks similar, he could impersonate his son and ruin his future?
It's utterly ridiculous.
Sister-in-law Yao, along with the top leader and his mother and son, and Zheng Huaixin driving with two former leaders, went to the police station. The top leader made an appearance, and the process of taking blood for the paternity test was conducted almost entirely in front of everyone.
When the top leader asked about the timeframe and heard that it would take more than half a month, he nodded in response.
He then took the mother and son to a hotel to stay, and as a result, all the expenses during their stay were paid by Zheng Huaixin.
“Young man, he wanted to do something worthwhile but didn’t even realize that someone was eyeing him. He should be taught a lesson. He’ll have to suffer in silence.”
Zheng Huaixin wore a wry smile, but secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
The leader was on his side, speaking up for him. Looking at the mother and son, Zheng Huaixin didn't think they could shake him at all.
What's fake will always be fake; it can never become real.
The group returned to the city hall. The investment promotion office barely had to say a word; the top leader nodded and instructed his subordinates to allocate funds.
Sister-in-law Yao glanced at the two old leaders, who both knew what was going on, but neither of them said anything.
After the three of them left, the top leader immediately called Zheng Huaixin in.
"Tell me about your marriage and children when you were sent to the countryside. What exactly happened?"
Zheng Huaixin confessed, "I dared not hide it from my superiors. I did have a marriage when I was sent to the countryside. When I first arrived, I was starving and cold and fell seriously ill. It was my wife and her family who saved my life. So I married into her family and we had a daughter. Later, I passed the college entrance exam and returned to Beijing. I told my wife that I wanted to go back to the city to develop my career. She was reluctant to leave her family and did not want to come with me. We agreed to raise the child together. I would not interfere if she remarried, and she would not care if I remarried. Who knew that three years later, my daughter died of illness, and I found someone else I liked. So I gradually lost contact with her..."
The leader frowned, remaining noncommittal, and glanced at him sideways, "What's the deal with that little boy?"
"I don't know either."
Zheng Huaixin shook his head, his mouth full of bitterness. "He looks like my son, but I don't have a son at all. But they insist that he is mine. Leader, they are determined to bring me down. They have ulterior motives."
The top leader hummed in agreement. "Are you sure you don't have a son?"
"I swear on my future, absolutely not!"
Zheng Huaixin immediately raised his hand and swore an oath, his words earnest and his eyes sincere, not flinching from the top leader's gaze, and he said firmly, "Huaixin would not dare to deceive the old leader!"
The top leader stared at him for a while, then waved his hand, telling him to put it down.
"You can find someone who looks like you for the child, but what about that woman? She showed her photo to those two from the investment promotion office. They could recognize you at a glance the man in the photo, and the woman's features are also six or seven points similar. How do you explain that?"
"this……"
Zheng Huaixin was also puzzled. Although the woman looked somewhat similar to the woman in the photo, he couldn't possibly mistake his former wife for her. They were definitely not the same person.
"Your opponent can't possibly find two people who look alike in such a short time, can they? Go, send a subordinate you trust to conduct a covert investigation in the place where you were sent to the countryside back then. A child can't just appear out of thin air; someone must know something about him."
Zheng Huaixin immediately nodded, "That's exactly what I was thinking. I'll go find someone in a bit."
The top leader grunted in agreement and glanced at him.
"Make sure this matter is handled well and there are no mistakes. I don't want to have to change people at the last minute."
"Yes, old leader, I will definitely not let you down."
After making arrangements, Zheng Huaixin immediately set off for the place where he was sent to work in the countryside. He sorted out the information and planned to go find the mother and son after work.
As a result, the receptionist said, "You had just settled the people in and left when the mother and son checked out and left right after."
"Gone? Where did they go?" Zheng Huaixin frowned.
The receptionist shook her head. "I don't know. A woman came to pick her up."
