Chapter 123 Sparring (Part 2)

Zhou Yue told Qin Xiaoyu to keep it a secret and not let her family know about it. So after she left, Qin Xiaoyu stayed in the office and refused to come out, afraid that Zhou Xing would ask her questions she couldn't answer.

"Dinner's ready." Zhou Xing barged in without knocking, and seeing Qin Xiaoyu's angry face, he gave a mischievous smile.

He was carrying a large bowl of soup, with two steamed buns between his fingers. As he passed Qin Xiaoyu, he suddenly leaned down, his lips brushing against her hair.

Qin Xiaoyu panicked and took a big step back, only to find that Master Wang was still standing at the door, looking completely terrified. She had brought up two more dishes because she was worried that Zhou Xing hadn't had enough to eat, but she hadn't expected to witness this scene. People in those days were conservative, and kissing someone's hair was already considered an extremely intimate gesture. She wished she could disappear into the ground.

"Thank you, Master." Qin Xiaoyu's face was burning hot as she walked over and took the plate from Master Wang's hand.

Master Wang hesitated for a moment, then closed the door and left.

"Look at you!" Qin Xiaoyu turned around and stomped her foot, but before she could get angry, Zhou Xing had already hugged her tightly.

"I miss you, I miss you, I miss you!" he murmured to himself.

Qin Xiaoyu's heart softened immediately.

"You just disappeared without a word, what kind of nonsense is this!" Qin Xiaoyu said, feeling wronged.

"There's nothing we can do about it. Remember, I'm a soldier. Although I may be a bit of a troublemaker, when the country is in trouble, it's a soldier's duty."

"Next time you leave, can you leave me a message, even if it's just one person?" Qin Xiaoyu looked up at her small face and pleaded.

"I'll try my best." Zhou Xing's eyes were already blazing with anger, and his breathing was becoming increasingly rapid.

There was a commotion on the stairs; someone was coming up. Master Wang was desperately trying to stop them: "Xiaoyu isn't here, come back this afternoon... wait, wait..."

Qin Xiaoyu pushed Zhou Xing away with all her might, and before she could even catch her breath, Qi Si had already burst through the door.

"Heh." Qi Si sneered, and Master Wang took off running.

"Brother, what brings you here?"

"Did I come at the wrong time?" Qi Si turned to Zhou Xing.

"I've heard so much about you." Zhou Xing took a step forward and reached out his hand, which Qi Si caught steadily. Qin Xiaoyu looked at their clenched hands and couldn't help but feel her bones ache.

The two men stared at each other without uttering a word, but their eyes were already blazing with tension.

Qin Xiaoyu didn't dare to speak; saying anything now would only make things worse. She decided to just observe.

"Not just anyone can be my brother-in-law." Qi Si let go of her hand, and Qin Xiaoyu breathed a sigh of relief.

"Brother, can I be your brother-in-law?" Zhou Xing asked with a smile.

"That depends on what you do. The commander's son, marrying a young widow, I'm afraid you can't do that, can you?"

"If I want to do it, I can do it. The Zhou family can do without me as their son, but my wife must be Qin Xiaoyu."

"You're a real man, let's see if you can keep your word."

"We didn't eat enough at noon. Your hotel is very famous, brother. Could you treat us to a meal?" Zhou Xing pressed his advantage.

"Let's go." Qi Si said just one word, seemingly very satisfied with Zhou Xing's unreasonable request.

Qin Xiaoyu was still in a daze when Zhou Xing reached out and grabbed her, gently pulling her into his arms and walking towards the door.

"Don't touch me, are you crazy!" Qin Xiaoyu darted away a foot away, creating distance between them.

Master Wang peeked out from the stairwell on the first floor and saw the three of them chatting and laughing as they walked downstairs. His eyes nearly popped out of his head.

"Master, I'm going out for lunch. You stay here and watch the house." Qin Xiaoyu reassured Master Wang by putting her arm around her arm as she walked past.

“Go ahead and don’t worry,” Master Wang replied immediately, but he didn’t move. He stretched his neck until he could no longer see the three people, then shook his head and said, “This is really strange.”

"What are you saying?" Commander Wang came out of the house. She was used to coming over to get her hair done and grab a meal before leaving, just like at home.

"You know, Xiaoyu doesn't look like a vixen, so why is she so attractive?" Master Wang felt a tightness in his chest and had to get it off his chest.

“Xiaoyu has a genuine heart, which is something not everyone has. She is truly kind to everyone. Who wouldn’t like a girl like that? Don’t even mention men, you’re a woman, wouldn’t you like her?” Commander Wang is indeed a leader, he understands people’s hearts very well.

In fact, Qin Xiaoyu never understood why she, who had the same personality in the 21st century, could not get any kindness in return.

Everyone's used to the same pattern: no matter how good you are to me, it won't matter; but if you're even slightly unkind, you're the worst person in the world. Qin Xiaoyu has been hurt a lot because of this.

But in the 1980s, she was still herself, still living a serious life, and yet she received rewards everywhere, so much so that she felt guilty.

Now she seems to have found the answer: it's because of the different environments. People in the 1980s were simple, had sound values, and knew how to be grateful. But people in the 21st century lack gratitude; they've lost their best virtue.

The same person can have different outcomes in different environments.

Qi Si took them to a new store that had already opened and was just as popular. He led them to a private room upstairs.

"Always reserve a table here, just in case." Qi Si ushered them in and smiled at Qin Xiaoyu, "Xiaoyu, you really know how to judge people. That Cheng Fuxing is truly a lucky star."

"What? He did a great job?"

“It’s more than just good; he’s become my strategist. He suggested that I open another Cantonese teahouse. I’ve already chosen the location, and construction will begin soon.”

"Teahouses? I've seen them when I went to Guangzhou. They're full of idle people who can sit there all day long."
