Zhou Yue slept soundly through the night, while Qin Xiaoyu spent the entire day lost in thought on the sofa. As night fell, Zhou Yue finally turned over, hummed a few times, and sat up.
"Who's there?" she asked in fear, unable to see who Qin Xiaoyu was.
"Sister Xiaoyue, it's me." Qin Xiaoyu finally came to her senses, wiped away her tears in the dark, and went over to pull the light cord.
"I drank too much?" Zhou Yue understood a little.
"You just got back from Guangzhou?"
"Yes, I came right after I got off the train."
"What did you gain in Guangzhou?" Qin Xiaoyu guessed the result wasn't good, but a glimmer of hope remained. Zhou Yue shook her head, extinguishing all hope.
"Sister Xiaoyue, since that's the case, just relax. There are plenty of people who can't have children and they're all doing just fine. Don't torture yourself like that."
“It’s not that I’m torturing myself, it’s…” Zhou Yue’s words were on the tip of her tongue, but she couldn’t finish them as tears welled up in her eyes.
"Sister Xiaoyue, even if you can't have children, you're not inferior to anyone. What are you afraid of?" Qin Xiaoyu walked to the bedside and sat down next to Zhou Yue.
"I'm just inferior, I can't do anything right, I can't even give birth to the simplest thing, what's the point of my life!" Zhou Yue covered her mouth and sobbed.
Qin Xiaoyu put his arm around her shoulder and let her cry her heart out.
Several times she wanted to ask Zhou Yue if she had been beaten, but she couldn't bring herself to say it. This was too hurtful to her pride; Zhou Yue had been keeping it a secret and didn't want them to know. She was afraid that asking abruptly would be too much for Zhou Yue to handle.
"Sister Xiaoyue, what are you planning to do?"
"I don't know. I don't dare go home. I'm afraid my mom will ask." Zhou Yue looked at Qin Xiaoyue with tearful eyes, her expression pitiful.
"Come back to school with me tonight. This is Fourth Brother's house, it's not convenient."
Upon hearing that the bed belonged to Fourth Brother, Zhou Yue jumped to the ground with lightning speed, and the sheets were restored to their original state a few seconds later.
"It's okay, don't worry about him. Wash your face, let's go." Qin Xiaoyu picked up Zhou Yue's bag and put it at the door. After watching her wash her face, they went out together.
The hotel was already bustling with activity. Qi Si wasn't at the front desk; he was probably in some private room entertaining clients. Qin Xiaoyu greeted the waiter and then led Zhou Yue out.
After arranging for Zhou Yue to go to sleep, Qin Xiaoyu didn't go downstairs. Instead, she sat in her office without turning on the lights, staring blankly at the lights of the Zhou family's house in the distance.
She wanted to travel around.
"Little Fish, what's up?" Master Wang quietly walked in.
"It's alright, Master, you should get some rest. I can't take care of things here, and I've exhausted you too."
"I'm not tired. Compared to you, who's tired?" Master Wang looked around, as if he had something to say.
"Master, just say what you want to say. Do we need to beat around the bush?"
"Then I'll tell you, Xiaoyu. I heard from the trainees today that a lot of military vehicles drove away outside, and Zhou Xing even called anxiously looking for you. Is that right?"
"Yes, he went south." Qin Xiaoyu lowered her head.
"Sigh, you must be feeling terrible. Although I don't approve of you two being together, to be fair, you two are such a perfect match. And he treats you so well. Oh, what a life you have." Master Wang raised his hand to wipe away his tears.
"Master, what are you saying? Nothing will happen!" Qin Xiaoyu said reproachfully.
"That's right, what am I saying! I was just worried and confused, don't take it to heart." Master Wang realized he had misspoke and quickly comforted Qin Xiaoyu.
"Master, don't think too much about it. Some things are destined. We should just focus on the good things."
"Okay, you should go to bed early too. By the way, try to visit the Zhou family more often when you have time. One reason is to look after the children, and the other is to contact Zhou Xing's mother more often. Maybe they'll accept you then."
"I know, it's not that simple."
"Alright, I won't say any more. You know what I mean. It's midnight, go to sleep."
"It's twelve o'clock?" Qin Xiaoyu didn't expect time to pass so quickly. Looking in the direction of the Zhou family, she saw that there was still a light on in one of the rooms.
Zhou Xing's mother is a sleeping beauty; she has a very regular schedule and never stays up late. She must go to bed at ten o'clock.
She's the only one home right now, and the lights are on. Is the child making a fuss? Or is she having something on her mind and can't sleep?
Come to think of it, with her husband and son both gone to the south, how could she sleep soundly?
Qin Xiaoyu didn't sleep a wink all night, her eyes were dark from lack of sleep. When she woke up in the morning, she found that Zhou Yue was gone, along with her luggage.
"She asked me to tell you that she went back to her husband's family home and that you shouldn't worry about her." Master Wang relayed the message, and couldn't help but add, "Is she being mistreated at her husband's family home? Look how listless she looks now. She used to be such a cheerful and carefree girl."
"I don't know either. She won't say, and I don't want to ask too much." Qin Xiaoyu was not in good spirits, but she still had to force herself to go to the new school to keep an eye on things.
As she went outside, she saw Qi Si's car; he was standing by the car smoking.
"Brother, you've come to settle scores with me?"
"Do you think you can figure things out by trying to settle accounts with me? If you keep trying to confuse me, I'm not going to bother with that. Get in the car, I'll take you to the new school."
"I need to drive. If you leave me there and go, what am I supposed to do?" Qin Xiaoyu shook her head.
"I'm not leaving. I'll be your driver. Get in." Qi Si opened the car door.
"Be my driver? You're so free now?" Qin Xiaoyu looked at Qi Si in confusion.
"Oh, just get in already, you talk too much." Qi Si got impatient again and shoved Qin Xiaoyu into the car.
"Brother, tell me, why?" Qin Xiaoyu felt something was off.
"That little brat Zhou Xing called me and asked me to take care of you, worried that you might be dizzy and cause an accident while driving," Qi Si said angrily.
Qin Xiaoyu shrank back into her car seat, staring at the road ahead with teary eyes, and remained silent.
"Who are they trying to impress? I really did something to deserve this! Sigh!" Qi Si complained as he steadily drove the car into the gate of the new school.
Team leader Chen has already started work with the workers. The job has been outsourced, so the sooner it's finished, the easier it will be. They get up early to work and get less sun exposure.
Qi Si was wearing a black T-shirt, revealing a section of his heavily tattooed arm, which was shocking to look at, and the workers worked even harder.
Qin Xiaoyu wandered up and down the stairs and saw a welder cutting a steel plate, so she quickly went over to him.
"Don't hurt your eyes." Qi Si was even more annoying than the nanny, and rushed over to stop her.
"I know, bro, you're so annoying." Qin Xiaoyu pushed him, but couldn't budge him.
"What do you want for lunch? I'll go buy it." Qi Si was also getting tired of waiting and wanted to find something to do.
"Hey! I have a great idea! Let's eat something special!" Qin Xiaoyu's eyes lit up as she looked at the steel plate and had an inspiration. Why not grill meat?
This Northeastern Chinese cuisine, which developed in the 21st century, is incredibly popular. Since we know that day will come, we might as well act sooner rather than later.
Qin Xiaoyu drew up a shopping list, which left Qi Si somewhat bewildered.
"Sliced beef, charcoal, cumin, chili powder, onion—what are you trying to do?"
"Just buy it if I tell you to." Qin Xiaoyu smiled sweetly, and Qi Si, having no resistance, obediently complied.
