Chapter 299 Aftermath

“The person is definitely gone. The bus fell off the cliff and was burned beyond recognition, but the body hasn’t been found. Old Deng was devastated and insists on finding the person to give the children an explanation. The farm has already transferred them and doesn’t want to waste their manpower and resources to help. I brought money with me this time, and everything is arranged. It should be done in the next few days.” Qi Si explained everything clearly.

Qin Xiaoyu's heart sank again when she thought of the two children.

The garment factory was bustling as usual, with machines humming. Someone noticed Qin Xiaoyu getting out of the car and ran back to report.

In the blink of an eye, the workers ran out of the workshop, with Xie Lanhua and Factory Director Fei leading the way.

Before Qin Xiaoyu could even enter the building, she was surrounded by them.

"Little Fish, have you suffered? I went there three times yesterday, but they wouldn't let me see anyone. I was so worried!" Xie Lanhua hugged Qin Xiaoyu, tears streaming down her face.

"Are you alright?" Director Fei asked in a muffled voice.

"Director Qin!"

"Director Qin!" the female workers screamed.

"It's alright, I'm back. Go back to work now." Qin Xiaoyu waved to them, holding back her tears.

They went into the office, and only then did the female workers disperse, and the sound of machines returned to the workshop.

"Wenwen." Qin Xiaoyu spotted Tang Wenwen sitting in the office. Her face was pale and her eyes were dark circles. It looked like she had taken a night train and hadn't gotten enough rest.

"I was worried, so I came back to check. Now that everything's alright, I'll head back right away." Tang Wenwen stood up, walked to Qin Xiaoyu's side, and suddenly hugged her tightly.

Qin Xiaoyu didn't move. She waited for Tang Wenwen to calm down before patting her back and gently pushing her away.

"Fourth Brother is downstairs, do you want to go with him?" Qin Xiaoyu asked Tang Wenwen if she wanted to see the child.

Both children have been discharged from the hospital. Deng Jianyan was right; this disease is scary when it flares up, but nothing happens afterward.

"No, I need to catch my train. I'll just take the bus. You have a lot of places to go, so don't worry about me." Tang Wenwen smiled, said goodbye to Xie Lanhua and the others, and walked out the door.

"Are you sure you don't want to watch?" Qin Xiaoyu asked again as she saw her out, still worried.

“Sister-in-law, I won’t watch anymore, and I’ll try my best not to watch anymore in the future. On the way back that day, I was also scared. If it was my mistake that exposed his identity, then I would really be sorry to him. Let him live with a clean identity. This world has never been fair to illegitimate children.”

"Wenwen, have you come to terms with it?"

"How could you be so pessimistic?" Tang Wenwen didn't let Qin Xiaoyu see her off again and went to the bus stop alone.

Qin Xiaoyu looked at her back and realized that she was no longer the same as before. The light and ethereal woman who used to dream had become as strong as a wall.

The next stop is the Second Light Industry Bureau Chief. I'll let Director Feng know I'm safe and sound to calm my nerves.

"I knew you were alright! They were just trying to bully me! I'm so angry!" Director Feng also had dark circles under his eyes, which made Qin Xiaoyu feel especially apologetic.

"Aunt Feng, I'm sorry to have made you worry about me."

"Who did this? If I find out, I'll make sure she pays the price!" Director Feng muttered, still seething with anger.

"It was my fault for not being thorough enough. I will definitely be more careful in the future and not give anyone any reason to criticize me."

"Yes, we can't give anyone a reason to criticize us later, it's too scary. I heard they beat people and starve them inside, you must have suffered a lot, right?" Director Feng looked Qin Xiaoyu up and down.

"Fortunately, my godmother is protecting me."

"I saw your godmother. She came to my door. I heard she's a fortune teller? Xiaoyu, could you contact her for me when you have time? I want to have my fortune told. I've been feeling uneasy lately. Jingtian is giving me so much trouble." After Director Feng said this, Qin Xiaoyu probably understood. She guessed that Jingtian had found a few more women.

After going around in circles and calming everyone down, Qin Xiaoyu finally returned to the Zhou family as her last stop.

"Girl, go back and get some sleep, don't think too much," Qi Si instructed before driving away.

Qin Xiaoyu knew no one was home; Zhou Xing's mother and the bodyguard were all at the hospital taking care of her, so she opened the door and came in.

The room was quiet and deserted. Qin Xiaoyu sat on the sofa and, for some reason, suddenly remembered the time when Zhou Xing and Zhou Yue were playing around. It felt like just yesterday, but everything had changed so much.

At that moment, all the grievances she had been holding in burst forth. She covered her face and sobbed uncontrollably.

She didn't know how much time had passed when she suddenly felt someone in front of her. She quickly lowered her hand and saw Xiao Jin, who had a serious expression, standing in front of her holding a white towel.

"Xiao Jin? Why aren't you at school?" Qin Xiaoyu awkwardly took the towel. She didn't like to show her emotions in front of others, and this time she had really embarrassed herself.

"I caught a cold, so I took the day off." Xiao Jin sat down on the other side of the sofa, and Little Black Cat Cake suddenly appeared out of nowhere and jumped on her.

Xiao Jin gently scratched the cake's chin with her fingers, making a gurgling sound, while her little paws rubbed against Xiao Jin's legs.

"Look, it's missing its mother again; it's kneading its breasts," Xiao Jin said to herself.

Qin Xiaoyu felt a pang of heartache. The child missed his mother, but his mother would never come back.

This is something she'll have to face sooner or later. Is she really going to keep it a secret until Deng Jianyan comes back with the urn containing his ashes?

Qin Xiaoyu stared at Xiao Jin, her eyes unconsciously revealing a conflicted expression.

"Is there something you want to tell me?" Xiao Jin was exceptionally perceptive and had already sensed something.

"Yes, I want to tell you something important."

"Forget it, I'm not listening anymore! You adults are all so boring. I'm going upstairs to read a book." Xiao Jin suddenly stood up in a panic, grabbed the cake, and ran upstairs.

"It's no use. No matter how far you run, you still have to face reality," Qin Xiaoyu said softly. Xiao Jin was rooted to the spot.

"What are you trying to say? Is something wrong with my mother? She went back to the farm and hasn't come back, and my father also suddenly went back." Xiao Jin had gathered quite a bit of information.

"Your mother was in a car accident," Qin Xiaoyu said with difficulty.

"No! Impossible!" Xiao Jin screamed.

She's gone.

"You're lying! It's impossible! She'll be back! She'll be back tomorrow! You're lying to me!" Xiao Jin cried and ran upstairs. Qin Xiaoyu slumped back onto the sofa, knowing that this pain could only be digested by the child herself.

After waiting a while, Qin Xiaoyu went upstairs and knocked on the door, but Xiao Jin locked herself in the guest room and refused to come out. Zhou Xing's mother wasn't home, and Qin Xiaoyu couldn't find the key, so she had to give up.

She was exhausted and wanted to lie down on the bed for a short rest, but she soon fell asleep.

One dream after another came crashing down on her, each one heavy, leaving her like prey being chased, with nowhere to hide.

When she finally got out of bed, drenched in sweat, it was already dark outside, and the small building was still quiet. She thought for a moment before realizing that Hanhan and the others must have gone straight to the hospital after school.
