Zhou Xing also suffers from insomnia.
Today's Qin Xiaoyu is different from the past.
She was like a little witch, constantly changing roles in front of him. Just when he thought he knew her well enough, she would pull off a glamorous transformation.
She looked her most disheveled today; the helplessness in her eyes was impossible to hide, yet there was a hint of heartache in her—a feeling that was hard to describe.
In his twenty-three years of life, Zhou Xing had never felt this way about any woman, and he was a little confused.
It was out of sympathy. He came to that conclusion, and felt much more relaxed.
When he woke up the next day, Qin Xiaoyu and her two children had already left. He heard from the nurse that she had asked for help to lock the door from the inside.
The office had been thoroughly cleaned of all traces of the three people; the floor had been swept, the table wiped, and the blankets on the bed folded neatly.
Zhou Xing sat in the seat where Qin Xiaoyu had sat yesterday, feeling inexplicably lost.
The surgery was a big day for Qin Xiaoyu. He stayed at the hospital all day until his wife regained consciousness and the doctor lowered the nursing level. The whole family breathed a sigh of relief.
"I'll stay here tonight."
Qin Xiaoyu knew that the first night after surgery was the most important. The Tang family was diligent but lacked experience. She had taken care of her grandmother when she was hospitalized, so she was the best candidate to stay. No matter what, she couldn't let go of the care on the first night.
"We can't leave a man behind, can we?" Grandpa Hanhan said worriedly.
With Tang Wenzhi gone, it wouldn't be appropriate for Qin Xiaoyu to stay with either of the men in the family.
"Dad, you can stay here." Qin Xiaoyu didn't understand what they were thinking.
"Wouldn't that be more convenient? How can a father-in-law and daughter-in-law share a room?" Hanhan's grandfather was quite old-fashioned and flatly refused.
"Dad, to put it bluntly, if you get old and sick in the future, will I be able to take care of you? Won't it be inconvenient for me?" Qin Xiaoyu immediately challenged him.
"This..." Hanhan's grandfather was speechless.
"Dad, Wenzhi is gone, and I don't have a proper family to rely on anymore. From now on, please treat me like your own daughter, okay?" Qin Xiaoyu had wanted to say this for a long time, but the time wasn't right.
"Okay, you're my daughter!" Grandma Hanhan reacted quickly.
"Then it's settled for tonight, whatever you say."
Grandpa Hanhan also realized that Qin Xiaoyu was the most sensible and capable person in the family. If they let her go, they would have to call her in the evening if something happened, which would be troublesome and might even cause serious problems. It would be better to keep her.
Qin Xiaoyu didn't plan to sleep that night. She would occasionally dab some water on her wife's chapped lips, and after hearing her groan a few times, she would go over to comfort her.
The night is so long, Qin Xiaoyu thought, forcing herself to stay awake.
Suddenly, a groan came from the outer room.
The fat woman cried her heart out and left the ward, never to be seen again. No one came that evening, and the old man didn't even eat.
Qin Xiaoyu had been completely devoted to his wife, neglecting everyone else, but now he couldn't ignore her.
She hesitated for a moment, then got up and went to the outer room.
"Are you feeling unwell? Should we call a doctor?" Qin Xiaoyu asked softly.
"Call the doctor." The old man's eyes widened when he saw Qin Xiaoyu approach.
Just as Qin Xiaoyu reached the door, Hanhan's grandfather chased after her.
“Xiaoyu, we can’t interfere in his family’s affairs. How did his daughter bully your mother? Now that we’ve intervened, she might blame us.”
“Dad, everyone has their limitations. No matter what his daughter is like now, he is helpless all by himself, and we have no reason not to help him.” After Qin Xiaoyu finished speaking, she opened the door and left. Grandpa Hanhan sighed helplessly.
The old man had stopped groaning; his eyes were wide open, as if he had heard everything, yet also as if he knew nothing.
When the nurse on duty saw Qin Xiaoyu knocking on the door, she hurriedly came to greet her, thinking that the lady of the house was not feeling well. When she heard that she was asking for help for the people in the outer room, her face immediately fell.
"You dare meddle in his family's business? You think you're being lenient with me?"
"Hehe, we can't just stand by and do nothing. Let's go take a look," Qin Xiaoyu said in a humble voice.
"Sigh, you," the nurse sighed helplessly and had no choice but to go to the ward with her.
"Nurse, I can't take it anymore, I need catheterization," the old man cried out as soon as he saw the nurse come in.
"The doctor isn't here, and there's no one to give you medical orders. You'll have to wait until dawn!" the nurse refused rudely.
"I can't wait any longer."
“We have to wait, even if we can’t. Your daughter has made a huge scene during the day, and our entire department is affected. We were publicly criticized at a meeting! Can’t you just shut up?”
The nurse was angry for a reason.
"That serious?" Qin Xiaoyu hadn't expected it either.
"Think about it, someone sneaks into the pharmacy to steal medicine. It's just ordinary IV fluids, but what if it were sleeping pills or something poisonous? That would be a huge incident! We'd all be implicated, and we wouldn't get our bonuses this month." The nurse sounded incredibly aggrieved.
"I feel bad about saying that." Qin Xiaoyu hadn't expected the consequences and regretted provoking them to call the police.
"What does it have to do with you? If someone wants to harm you, why would they care if you live or die?" The nurse was quite reasonable. At this point, the old man stopped talking, and the nurse turned and walked out.
"Can you hold on until dawn? Can you really endure it?" Qin Xiaoyu could only try to comfort him.
"I can't bear it," the old man choked out, two streams of tears rolling down his cheeks, looking truly pitiful.
Qin Xiaoyu sighed; she had no choice but to see a doctor.
After much effort, she finally managed to find a doctor on duty in the urology department. It turned out that the old man had a chronic benign prostatic hyperplasia, and the stress from his daughter's actions during the day had caused him to have an acute attack, which was very painful and required catheterization.
When Qin Xiaoyu brought the medical order, the nurse was reluctant but had to carry it out, but she started finding fault with it again.
"We need to contact your family members. The procedure requires their cooperation; I can't do it alone."
Qin Xiaoyu was dumbfounded. The fat woman had disappeared, and she didn't know where to find the old man's family.
She just couldn't bring herself to take off an old man's pants, so she looked to Hanhan's grandfather for help.
"Dad," Qin Xiaoyu pleaded.
"Alright, I'll do it. You can come inside." Grandpa Hanhan had no way to deal with this daughter-in-law, so he had no choice but to bite the bullet and come over.
Qin Xiaoyu hurriedly turned and went back into the house. His wife was awake, staring at him without saying a word. The two remained silent, listening to the soft sounds of conversation coming from outside.
"Your wife looks tough, but she's actually very soft-hearted; she has a sharp tongue but a kind heart." The nurse had a pretty good impression of Qin Xiaoyu.
"That's right, my daughter-in-law is a good person," Grandpa Hanhan said proudly.
"Why haven't I seen your son come here? Is he working out of town?"
"My son is gone, from a work injury." Grandpa Hanhan's voice lowered, and the outer room fell completely silent.
After a night of suffering, my wife was noticeably better. The pain had lessened, and after passing gas, she ate some porridge and then drifted off to sleep.
Qin Xiaoyu hadn't slept well for two nights and had dark circles under her eyes.
