Chapter 238
When Lei Tingjun led Ji Wanmei out of the small hot pot stall, he still looked a little unsteady on his feet.
Ji Wanmei reached out and supported his waist, letting him lean against her.
Once outside, Lei Tingjun straightened up, wrapped his arm around Ji Wanmei's slender body, and pulled her into his embrace.
As if afraid she would get cold, he unfolded his coat and wrapped her entire upper body inside his clothes.
Ji Wanmei was stunned, blinked twice, and lifted her head from his chest: "Weren't you drunk?"
He pressed his forehead against the top of Ji Wanmei's head, his voice low and magnetic as he chuckled, "I already told you, this little bit of wine won't get me drunk."
Ji Wanmei angrily punched him: "So you were faking it?"
"Yeah, I was faking it." He was still laughing, a low, muffled chuckle.
His powerful chest, through the low-frequency vibrations of his strong muscles, reached her soft chest, allowing her to feel his joy.
Ji Wanmei poked his chest: "You're so naughty! How come I never noticed before that you had this side to you? You can even pretend now."
Lei Tingjun nuzzled her with the tip of his nose, his hot breath spraying on her face. He stared at her, a smile playing on his lips, and said, "I can't escape your eyes after all."
Ji Wanmei hummed twice.
Lei Tingjun suddenly exerted force, grabbed her knees, and lifted her up high.
He seemed very excited and agitated, holding her and spinning her around, shouting, "Ji Wanmei! Lei Tingjun belongs to Ji Wanmei!"
Ji Wanmei was startled by him, being lifted and spun around. She quickly grabbed his shoulders with both hands, "Hey, put me down!"
Lei Tingjun was as excited as a teenager having a burst of playfulness. Not only did he not put Ji Wanmei down, but he also lifted her up and tossed her high into the air before catching her firmly with his arms.
Ji Wanmei cried out in surprise, covering her eyes, "Oh my! It's too high!"
She felt like a feather he had tossed high into the air, a light feather that could reach out and pluck the stars from the sky, only to land in his firm, warm embrace.
Ji Wanmei was both scared and amused.
A moment later, she started giggling, her laughter echoing into the vast, dark night.
His and her shadows ran and frolicked on the construction site.
"Is it fun? Do you want me to lift you up a little higher?" Lei Tingjun asked, lifting her up with both hands, something in his dark eyes shining terrifyingly.
Ji Wanmei was held horizontally in front of him, her arms wrapped around his neck, and she looked up to look carefully into his eyes.
It was then that she realized he was actually quite drunk.
His face was dark with a reddish tinge, and he grinned foolishly, showing off his neat teeth; he even looked a bit silly and goofy.
His eyes had never been so tender and radiant as they were at this moment.
Just like the brightest star in the sky right now.
Ji Wanmei saw her own reflection clearly in his dark eyes.
"Are your hands tired?" she asked him.
"Not tired," he shook his head.
"Then carry me back, I don't want to walk anymore." Ji Wanmei clung to him, not wanting to get down.
"Okay, then I'll carry her back." Lei Tingjun smiled and lifted her up a little, even giving her a slight lift, before carrying the girl in his arms and walking forward.
After walking for a while, Lei Tingjun said again, "Do you want to see the stars? I'll take you."
Ji Wanmei looked up, tilted her head, and gazed at the sky for a while before saying, "There don't seem to be many stars tonight."
"Go ahead, there's a high hillside where you can see lots of stars."
Lei Tingjun carried Ji Wanmei to the spot where he often looked at the stars, took off his coat, and let her sit down.
Ji Wanmei sat shoulder to shoulder with him, looking up at the starry sky.
The location here is elevated and quiet, offering a much better view of the night sky than from below.
“When I have nothing to do at night, I come here to look at the stars.” Lei Tingjun looked up, a quiet gentleness in his deep black eyes. “Especially when I miss you.”
Ji Wanmei rested her head on his shoulder and listened quietly to him speak.
His voice was deep and husky, especially in the quiet of the night, it had a unique calming charm that could soothe Ji Wanmei's mind.
"Are you cold?" he turned to her and asked.
"I'm not cold." Ji Wanmei noticed that he was only wearing a knitted cotton sweater under his coat, but when she touched his skin and forehead, they were burning hot, so she knew that he was feeling the effects of the alcohol.
"Let's go back and rest." Ji Wanmei was worried that he was dressed too lightly and would catch a cold from the wind.
Lei Tingjun asked her to take his coat, and then carried her down the hillside.
Ji Wanmei leaned against him and asked softly, "Lei Tingjun, did you go back to your hometown for the New Year?"
“No.” Lei Tingjun said in a low voice, “I don’t have any relatives left in my hometown. Going back and seeing the empty old house would make me very sad.”
“Then how about,” Ji Wanmei whispered in his ear, “I’ll go back to your hometown with you to see your grandma.”
Lei Tingjun seemed to chuckle softly, steadily carrying her forward on his back. "My hometown is very poor. I'm afraid that if you see how poor my family is, you won't want me anymore."
Ji Wanmei felt a slight pang in her heart.
Lei Tingjun would never normally say these things to her.
Even though he harbored a deep-seated inferiority complex stemming from his background when facing Ji Wanmei, he managed to control it very well.
He would neither make Ji Wanmei feel that he was belittling himself, nor would he make Ji Wanmei feel that he was underestimating himself.
Even when facing other friends and brothers, Lei Tingjun never showed any insecurity stemming from his background.
Even someone like Zhou Min, who was clear-headed and rational enough to know that she needed to rely on her knowledge to change her destiny, experienced a period of insecurity and self-doubt when she first entered East China University.
Ji Wanmei assumed that Lei Tingjun didn't have such thoughts; he was a hero who didn't care about his future.
But it turns out that even the Thunder Army has its share of insecurities.
Especially when I'm with her.
He doesn't usually express his true feelings, but today he was drunk, though not to the point of being completely unconscious.
He was only three or four parts dazed and six or seven parts restrained; these words were spoken entirely unconsciously.
"Silly boy, how could I not want you?" Ji Wanmei wrapped her arms around his neck from behind.
Lei Tingjun persistently asked, "Really? Will you never leave me for the rest of your life?"
Seeing him speak his true feelings after drinking, Ji Wanmei found him both adorable and heartbreaking. She pressed her cheek against his back and softly replied, "Yes, I won't abandon you, and I won't leave you."
"That's great!" He exclaimed, his tone suddenly becoming light and cheerful, as if he had received a promise from a proud young man.
He carried Ji Wanmei on his back and ran forward with all his might, laughing loudly as he ran: "Great! Ji Wanmei will never leave the Thunder Army!"
Ji Wanmei sighed softly to herself.
Lei Tingjun, you're such a fool!
