Chapter 237
Everyone started joking and teasing:
"Boss, I want some too, can you heat one up for me?"
"Hey boss, I can't reach it, can you grab one for me too, hehe?"
Lei Tingjun didn't even lift his eyelids: "Get out of here. There's so much food, can't it shut you up?"
Ji Wanmei said, "Alright, alright, stop putting food on my plate. Eat some yourself. You're just burning my food and you haven't eaten any yourself."
Lei Tingjun said, "I'm not used to eating this."
He finds it troublesome. When it comes to food, he can simply stir-fry it all in one pot and eat it with rice, but he insists on making a separate pot, serving the vegetables in individual plates, and eating them piece by piece while they're still hot.
For someone as rugged and untamed as Lei Tingjun, eating hot pot is at most about enjoying the lively atmosphere.
However, he was quite willing to serve Ji Wanmei soup and vegetables, and even enjoyed it immensely.
Especially when he watched her carefully open her rosy lips, tuck her long hair behind her ear, and eat with elegance and grace, blowing on the food to keep it warm, he felt he couldn't take his eyes off her for even a moment.
But if he had to lie down and eat little by little like that, he would find it too troublesome.
"Do you want me to help you?" Ji Wanmei asked with a smile.
She picked up a slice of spicy beef with her chopsticks, cooked it, and put it in Lei Tingjun's bowl, saying, "Try it, it's pretty good."
Lei Tingjun picked it up, put it in his mouth in one bite, and grinned at Ji Wanmei: "Mmm, delicious."
"Tsk tsk tsk, I've been cooking for our coworkers for so long, and I've never heard Brother Lei say it's delicious. But when his wife came, she just cooked some beef for him, and he said it was delicious. Sigh..." The fat cook pretended to sigh, "It's true, the difference in treatment between people is just that big."
Ji Wanmei smiled and said, "That's because your broth and hot pot base are so well-made, that's why the vegetables taste so good. Your Brother Lei is just praising your cooking skills."
The chubby cook laughed and said, "We love listening to your words, sister-in-law. Your skills are truly exceptional. No wonder you can keep our Brother Lei completely under your thumb."
Lei Tingjun felt that these guys really needed to be taught a lesson today.
Each of them had lips that looked like they were coated with oil, speaking in a glib and slick manner, their mouths running wild.
"Yes! Sister-in-law, you don't know, every time the postman comes, if there's a letter for you, Brother Lei treasures it like it's something precious, and he won't let us touch it."
"And I know! Brother Lei often writes letters in bed at night with a flashlight. He thinks we don't know, but we all know. Brother Lei is definitely writing letters to his wife!"
Everyone started talking at once, 'complaining' to Ji Wanmei about Lei Tingjun's usual behavior.
Ji Wanmei chuckled upon hearing this, saying, "Really?", then turned to Lei Tingjun with a leisurely air, "Are you really like this usually?"
Lei Tingjun's face darkened slightly, his already cold and deep-set face turning red and then dark again. He dared not look Ji Wanmei in the eye: "Don't listen to their nonsense."
He pretended to cover it up and put some food into her bowl: "Eat more food, don't take it to heart."
Ah Qiang picked up his wine glass, stood up, and toasted Ji Wanmei, saying, "Sister-in-law, I, Ah Qiang, would like to propose a toast to you! I never had the chance to call you sister-in-law before, but today I can finally call you sister-in-law openly and honestly. I hope you and Brother Lei will be happy in the future!"
Ji Wanmei did not correct A-Qiang's way of addressing him.
She and Lei Tingjun were indeed in a relationship. Lei Tingjun had previously wished A-Qiang not to shout it out because he was afraid that A-Qiang would let it slip in Pingquan County. But now they were in Pingdong City, at Lei Tingjun's construction site, so Ji Wanmei didn't stop everyone from making such good-natured teasing and jokes.
They called her "sister-in-law," and she always responded with a smile.
Especially when Lei Tingjun's brothers called her that and she didn't object, she realized that Lei Tingjun was actually very happy.
Although he didn't say it, Ji Wanmei could tell that he was very happy today, extremely happy.
His sharp eyebrows and dark eyes were filled with pleasure.
Ji Wanmei glanced at the cup in front of her and said, "I can't drink alcohol, so I'll use tea instead."
A-Qiang glanced at Lei Tingjun next to Ji Wanmei and, seeing that he didn't have a calm expression on his face, mustered up his courage and said, "Sister-in-law can't drink alcohol, so you can drink tea instead. But Brother Lei can drink alcohol, so why don't you let Brother Lei drink for you?"
"Yeah, yeah, Brother Lei can drink! Our Brother Lei has a great capacity for alcohol!" Everyone chimed in.
Upon hearing this, Lei Tingjun glared at A-Qiang.
He poured half a glass of water for Ji Wanmei, then filled his own glass with wine: "The brothers toasted her, I'll drink it."
Anyway, Lei Tingjun isn't driving tomorrow; he's going to be with Ji Wanmei. It's fine for him to have a few drinks tonight.
Upon hearing Lei Tingjun's words, everyone felt as if they had received a royal decree, and they all became excited, taking turns to toast Ji Wanmei, their sister-in-law.
Every time Ji Wanmei took a small sip of water, Lei Tingjun would finish the whole cup.
Ji Wanmei was terrified; his alcohol tolerance was just too high.
"Lei Tingjun, drink less. I'm afraid you'll get drunk later," she whispered in his ear.
Lei Tingjun took her small hand under the table, gently stroking her fingertips in his palm, and said in a low voice, "It's alright, this little bit of wine won't get me drunk."
"Then eat something." Ji Wanmei kept putting food into his bowl.
During the first half of the meal, Lei Tingjun was the one serving food to Ji Wanmei. In the second half, after Ji Wanmei had finished eating, she saw her brothers constantly coming to toast Lei Tingjun, so she started serving him food.
Lei Tingjun wasn't picky about food at all; he would eat whatever she put in his bowl.
As everyone toasted each other, they skipped Ji Wanmei, knowing she didn't drink. Once everyone had had their fill, they went straight to drink with Lei Tingjun.
At night on the construction site, in a small shed enclosed by white plastic sheeting, two square tables were put together, and more than a dozen people sat around them. Two hot pots were steaming, and charcoal fires were blazing in the brazier, providing warmth and comfort to everyone.
During the meal, everyone laughed and chatted, eating and drinking, creating a joyful atmosphere.
It's as if the atmosphere lost during the Lunar New Year is made up for on this day.
Ji Wanmei really liked the atmosphere at Lei Tingjun's construction site.
Joyful, simple, unpretentious, and down-to-earth.
Life is sometimes that simple: being with the people you love and doing simple, joyful things.
However, even with his high alcohol tolerance, Lei Tingjun couldn't withstand the constant toasts from more than a dozen people. Eventually, he became a little tipsy.
After finishing their hotpot meal, Lei Tingjun waved his hand and said he wouldn't drink anymore.
He wanted to take Ji Wanmei back to rest first.
Everyone smiled knowingly and said, "Brother Lei, sister-in-law, get some rest. We won't bother you!"
