"Where do I sleep?" she asked him, turning around.
"You sleep on my side, I'll sleep on Grandma's side. The bed over there is warm, this one is hard," Lei Tingjun said, placing the candle on the stool.
The old house had been uninhabited for a long time, so the electricity was cut off, and there were no lights upstairs at night, so we could only use candles.
Ji Wanmei pursed her lips, remained silent for a moment, and then nodded: "Okay."
She carried her coat, walked to the bed on the other side of the stilt house, and reached out to touch it. The bed was freshly made and felt very dry.
āIām right here. Just call me if you need anything,ā Lei Tingjun said from behind.
Ji Wanmei sat on the edge of the bed, looking at the charcoal brazier opposite her and the dim candlelight beside the stool, and mumbled a reply: "Oh."
She didn't know why she was feeling down.
Lei Tingjun's initiative in making two beds shows that he respects her and has no intention of offending her. She should be happy about that.
However, Ji Wanmei was a little scared to sleep alone in this unfamiliar old house, where there was no electricity, only a brazier and a candle.
In particular, the person she trusts is right next door, yet she can neither see nor touch him.
This feeling made her feel very disappointed.
Ji Wanmei tried to calm herself down, took off her clothes, and crawled into bed.
She closed her eyes, trying to fall asleep quickly.
But tonight, she didn't know what was wrong with her. Whether it was because she was unfamiliar with the bed or just shy around strangers, she couldn't fall asleep for a long time, tossing and turning in bed.
Ji Wanmei couldn't sleep on this side, and Lei Tingjun on the other side was equally sleepless.
The girl he loved was lying on his former bed, but he could only force himself to stay far away and protect her.
You can't get close to her, and you can't hold her.
This is so hard to endure.
Ji Wanmei stared with her eyes open as the charcoal fire in the brazier beside the bed slowly died down. Suddenly, she heard several strange cries coming from the woods behind the house.
It sounded somewhat like the cry of a wild animal, and also like the mournful cry of some kind of bird.
Ji Wanmei gripped the blanket tightly and whispered, "Lei Tingjun, I'm scared."
Lei Tingjun immediately got up, walked to the other room, and saw Ji Wanmei curled up in the quilt, with only half of her head sticking out.
"Don't be afraid, it's just the hooting of an owl."
No sooner had he finished speaking than the strange cry rang out again.
Behind the quiet, empty farmhouse, the sound did indeed seem a bit eerie.
Lei Tingjun sat on the edge of the bed and comforted Ji Wanmei, saying, "Our hometown has many mountains and forests, and a lot of wild animals. Owls come out at night and stop in the woods behind the mountain, occasionally calling out a few times."
Ji Wanmei reached out from under the covers and grabbed him: "It's making me scared. Can you come and keep me company?"
She huddled under the covers, making room in the bed, and looked up at him: "Sleep with me."
Lei Tingjun's throat bobbed, his gaze deep: "Meimei..."
