Chapter 242 Trouble Comes Knocking

Wang Wanru sat quietly by the window, her thoughts drifting back to that distant yet familiar past.

Back then, she and her younger sister, Wang Wanfang, were still young, but they always loved to compete and were never willing to give in. Whether it was toys, snacks, or their parents' affection, they would fight to see who was the best. Who could have imagined that those little squabbles would escalate into such a estranged relationship?

Thinking about her younger sister's recent actions, Wang Wanru felt a chill run down her spine. To secure her position in her husband's family, Wang Wanfang had resorted to any means necessary. She completely disregarded the past sisterly affection and desperately tried to please her husband's family. Wang Wanru never imagined that her own sister could be so ruthless as to target her niece, Lin Xue.

Initially, Wang Wanfang schemed to marry a much older man, hoping for a stable life. She thought she would settle down and live a quiet, obedient life. But to her surprise, she resorted to any means to solidify her position in her husband's family! Even more unacceptable was that after her husband's younger brother became widowed, Wang Wanfang even considered having Lin Xue marry into his family. This was utterly depraved! Wang Wanru could not possibly agree to such an absurd thing happening.

However, faced with her sister's stubbornness and insistence, Wang Wanru ultimately had no choice but to compromise. She would rather let Lin Xue stay in the rural area where she was sent to work, even if she had to struggle to survive alone, than marry into the city and suffer such torment. After all, if Lin Xue really married that old man's brother, not to mention the criticism and ridicule that such complicated family relationships would attract, just thinking about the tragic fate Lin Xue might face in the future made Wang Wanru's heart ache as if it were being cut by a knife.

However, even though Wang Wanru had made concessions, Wang Wanfang was still not satisfied. In her view, she had kindly helped her sister's family return to the city, but instead of being grateful, they had turned against her because of this, and even preferred to let their daughter stay in the countryside to suffer rather than comply with her arrangements.

The two sisters then had a fierce argument, saying many hurtful things to each other. From then on, they completely cut off all contact and became like strangers.

Thinking about these troubling things, Wang Wanfang also felt uncomfortable.

Wang Wanrou took a deep breath, trying to shake off all those terrible emotions. She decided to start by doing some housework, partly to calm herself down, and partly to tidy up the house. The kitchen, in particular, needed a thorough cleaning so that she could smoothly begin preparing lunch when her daughter and son-in-law returned.

However, plans don't always go as expected. Just as Wang Wanrou was busy with her tasks, a sudden commotion erupted outside the door. The noise was chaotic, and it seemed to include a familiar voice that she found utterly repulsive. Wang Wanrou's heart tightened, and she quickly put down what she was doing and hurried to the door.

The moment she opened the door, she saw the person she least wanted to see—her own sister, Wang Wanfang. Wang Wanrou's face instantly darkened, as if a storm was about to break, and she said coldly, "What are you doing here? You're not welcome here, get out!"

The man standing next to Wang Wanfang was Cui Hao, a shifty-eyed man with a glib tongue. Wang Wanfang glanced at her sister with disdain and said sarcastically, "Oh dear, look at your face. We haven't even stepped into the house yet, and you treat your own family like this? Do you have something to hide, afraid I'll discover some unspeakable secret?"

Wang Wanfang's delicate face was now filled with contempt, her lips curled into a mocking smile as she said sarcastically, "Sister, what are you doing? I'm your own sister, born of the same mother! If it weren't for my help, you might still be eating sand flying everywhere in the desert of Northwest China! How can you be so ungrateful and ungrateful? You have to let me in for a while! By the way, I heard that little brat Lin Xue is back. Where is she?"

Upon hearing these words, Wang Wanru's face turned deathly pale, and her eyes flickered uncertainly, clearly indicating that she was flustered.

But she quickly regained her composure, gritted her teeth, and retorted firmly, "Hmph! At first, we were indeed quite grateful to you, after all, it was because of you that we were able to return to the city ahead of schedule. However, don't forget what your true intentions and purposes were! After we returned to the city, who was it that interfered and prevented us from resuming our original jobs? Don't think you can hide these things from me! Besides, even without your 'help' back then, we would still be able to return here today!"

Wang Wanfang was completely taken aback that her usually docile older sister would so ruthlessly expose her facade, and for a moment she was at a loss, frozen in place. It took her a while to recover.

As she spoke, she turned to Cui Hao beside her and ordered, "Cui Hao, hurry up and go in and see if that little slut is hiding inside. I'm going to find out today!"

Upon hearing this, Cui Hao immediately nodded repeatedly like a lapdog, replying, "Okay, okay! It's definitely there!" After saying that, he lifted his foot and was about to rush into the house.

"Let's see who dares!!" Wang Wanrou glared angrily at the two ungrateful people in front of her, spreading her arms wide like an impregnable fortress, blocking their way.

At that moment, time seemed to freeze. The two sides stood locked in a tense standoff, neither willing to yield, the atmosphere thick with tension. Everyone's nerves were taut, like a fully drawn bow, ready to be released at any moment. This tense atmosphere instantly filled the once tranquil street with the smell of gunpowder.
