Chapter 155 Uncle and Cousin Come to Pay New Year's Visits

Time flies, and it was soon New Year's Eve. Song Lili chose to keep a low profile today, so there were no firecrackers, only a lantern. The whole family gathered together to chat and spend New Year's Eve.

On the first day of the Lunar New Year, it is customary not to visit each other for New Year's greetings, so Song Jianshe went to his uncle Song Yongli's house to exchange New Year's greetings with his family.

Song Lili didn't want to see Song Yongli and his group, so she refused Song Jianshe's suggestion to go with her and stayed at home, lost in thought.

She thought it best not to make a fool of herself; if she went to the Gu family, who knew how they would humiliate her?

She's not a masochist; she doesn't have a habit of being scolded for no reason.

So, Song Fang and I stayed at home, just cooped up together.

On the second day of the Lunar New Year, both Song Yongren and Song Jianshe set off. Song Yongren went to his uncle Wu Jiang's house to pay New Year's greetings, while Song Jianshe went to Chen Erhua's house.

Only Song Lili and Song Fang were at home, waiting for their uncle and aunt to come and pay their respects for the New Year so they could entertain them.

Apart from my aunt's husband and my uncle's husband, no one else came that day.

On the third day, you can feel the sudden increase in the number of people coming to your home. For some families with many relatives, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to describe it as a bustling place.

The Song family doesn't have that many relatives, but they've been coming and going since morning.

These days, transportation is inconvenient, and everyone relies on their own two legs to get around, so everyone gets up early and arrives early.

So by the afternoon, almost no one else came. Song Lili counted, and apart from her uncle Wu Jiang's family, everyone else had come.

I thought that my uncle from Wujiang came in the afternoon last year, so he should come in the afternoon this year too.

In the afternoon, Wu Jiang indeed came to visit, but this time, he also brought his cousin Wu Huan with him.

It was the first time Song Lili had met Wu Huan, so she didn't recognize him at all. It wasn't until Song Jianshe called him "cousin" that Song Lili realized that this person was her uncle's eldest son, Wu Huan.

"Hello, cousin," Song Lili quickly greeted him sweetly, partly to cover up her embarrassment and her unusual behavior.

However, everyone was busy exchanging pleasantries, and no one noticed Song Lili's unusual behavior. When Wu Huan heard Song Lili call out, he smiled and said, "Hello, cousin."

Song Jianshe was very happy to see Wu Huan and kept talking to him. Song Lili also took the opportunity to look Wu Huan up and down.

He was dressed in a faded blue outfit, which, although unpatched, had some loose threads that would tear it instantly if a sharp object were present.

His complexion was sallow and he was thin, but he was quite tall, probably between 1.78 and 1.80 meters.

With a square face, thick eyebrows, big eyes, and a clear gaze, Wu Huan makes a good first impression on Song Lili.

Therefore, she was also very willing to get close to Wu Huan, after all, her uncle Wu Jiang was really a very good uncle.

Song Yongren led Wu Jiang inside, followed by Song Jianshe and Wu Huan. Song Lili then dragged Song Fang to the kitchen to cook something for her uncle and cousin, who were probably hungry.

Song Lili used what she had at home to stir-fry a plate of meat, a plate of vegetables, and then heated up four or five steamed buns before serving them.

My uncle's family doesn't do those fancy, fancy things that look good and make you look good, but don't fill your stomach.

Right now, the more practical the better.

When the food was served, Wu Jiang immediately became unhappy, saying, "Why bother with all this? It's only just past noon, we're not even hungry yet."

Song Lili smiled and placed the chopsticks in front of Wu Jiang. "Eat something even if you're not hungry. It's the New Year, so of course we want to have a festive and lively time."

"Uncle, cousin, please eat some, I've already prepared everything."

Song Lili thought to herself, "I was afraid you would have this attitude, so I acted first and informed you later. Otherwise, you would have stopped me long ago."

"Lili, why are you and your uncle doing all this formality? Your uncle is family, no need for that. Take it away quickly, you can have it for dinner tonight."

Looking at the white and tender steamed buns, wasn't Wu Jiang tempted? No, he was very tempted; he couldn't even remember the last time he had eaten white flour steamed buns.

But he knew how precious food was; he wasn't a child anymore and didn't understand its importance.

So even though he really wanted to eat it, he controlled himself. It was his nephew's food, and he couldn't be so inconsiderate as to eat it and leave them with nothing to eat.

Wu Huan was also drooling over the steamed buns, his eyes almost glued to them, and his lips were constantly moving.

But without Wu Jiang's permission, he didn't move, trying his best to control himself from looking at the steamed buns, but he hadn't seen them for so long that he couldn't control himself.

Seeing the two of them like this, Song Lili felt extremely sad.

She wondered what excuse she could use to help her uncle this time.

Song Yongren saw this too, and felt even more grateful to Wu Jiang, which made him think of the days when he was starving.

Back then, everyone was struggling, and anyone with a spare bite of food would quickly share it with their family. But even in those difficult circumstances, this brother-in-law still helped his own family.

He will always remember that friendship.

So, though his eyes welled up with tears, he firmly placed the chopsticks into their hands, saying, "Lili has finished cooking, so you should eat now."

In my heart, I was also happy with Song Lili's behavior, and I felt that this child was sensible.

“My family is doing better this year. The grain we received, plus what Lili cooked herself, is enough to eat. We won’t go hungry, so you don’t need to worry about us.”

How could Song Yongren not know what his brother-in-law was thinking? That's why he was even more grateful.

However, Wu Jiang didn't really believe Song Yongren's words. In this day and age, whose family is having an easy time?

Song Jianshe also hurriedly stuffed chopsticks into Wu Huan's hands, saying, "Cousin, hurry up and eat. Lili's cooking is delicious."

Then, seeing Wu Jiang's hesitant look, he was afraid that Wu Jiang would not believe him. "Uncle, what my uncle said is true."

“Lili grows vegetables in a greenhouse and makes a lot of money from them. In addition to the grain allocated to my family, we also buy some grain from the supply and marketing cooperative, so you can eat without worry.”

Wu Jiang looked at Song Jianshe with suspicion and asked, "Is this true?"

Song Jianshe and Song Fang both nodded at the same time, "Really, really."

Song Jianshe was already quite old when he went hungry, so he remembers very clearly the scene of his uncle feeding him.

Now that I'm doing well, I want to share it with my uncle and want him to do well too.

Seeing that all three children were like this, Wu Jiang picked up the chopsticks with some doubt, but still didn't touch them.

Song Lili sighed helplessly, "Uncle, don't worry, I won't pretend to be rich. I'll do whatever my family has for you."

"Besides, you probably won't eat much at someone else's house, just a bite or two. You're probably all hungry by now, right?"

“What my older brother said is true. The money I make from growing vegetables in the greenhouse is enough to buy food. My family is doing well, and we can afford these things, so you can rest assured.”
