Chapter 156: Heartache for My Uncle

To be honest, Song Lili felt a mix of sadness and warmth in her heart. Having such an uncle made her feel very lucky.

"Really?" Wu Jiang was still confirming.

"Of course it's true, why would I lie to you? Have you ever seen me like this before?" In the end, it was Song Yongren who spoke up.

Wu Jiang thought to himself, "It really hasn't happened before."

"So hurry up and eat, don't be shy with Huanhuan, or you'll be starving when you get home."

Everyone knows who else is, right? During the Lunar New Year, everyone is like this. When you go to someone else's house, you don't dare to eat there. Except for those shameless people, you'll all leave hungry.

Therefore, even if Wu Jiang said he wasn't hungry, Song Yongren's family understood what was going on.

"Alright, then I won't stand on ceremony." After finally confirming, Wu Jiang picked up his chopsticks in one hand and the steamed bun in the other and started eating.

Song Lili quickly handed the chopsticks she had put down back to Wu Huan, saying, "Cousin, you should eat too."

"Okay," Wu Huan agreed and began to eat heartily.

Song Lili quietly went out and boiled half a pot of water, thinking that she would let the two of them quench their thirst after they finished eating.

In the end, after being persuaded by their family, the two of them finished everything that Song Lili had made, and even wiped the plates clean with steamed buns.

Song Lili felt even more heartbroken and turned to leave, but Wu Jiang stopped her.

"Lili, come back, your uncle has something to do."

Song Lili asked in confusion, "Uncle, is there something you want to say?" She thought it was something important, but unexpectedly Wu Jiang took out his New Year's money.

"This is for you and Fangfang. Your uncle doesn't have much money, so it's just a small token for each of you. Don't look down on your uncle, okay?"

Wu Jiang opened his patched-up shirt and took out a few crumpled bills from the sewn-in pocket inside, totaling two cents.

“If the construction goes too big, my uncle won’t give it to us anymore,” Wu Jiang explained to Song Jianshe.

Song Jianshe hurriedly waved his hands and shook his head, "No, no, Uncle, I don't need it. I don't need New Year's money."

Song Jianshe felt that he was an adult and should not accept New Year's money. In addition, his uncle's family was not doing well, so how could he accept New Year's money?

Song Lili thought the same way, so she didn't let Wu Jiang hand over the money at all. "Uncle, no need, you keep the money."

“No, this is from your uncle. It’s something children should have for the New Year,” Wu Jiang insisted.

Song Lili really didn't want it, but Wu Jiang's gaze was so firm that she knew she had to accept it.

With a helpless sigh, he could only accept the gifts, saying, "Alright, thank you, Uncle." He then gave them all to Song Fang.

Song Yongren disapproved of Song Lili's actions. "Lili, quickly return it to your uncle. How can you be so insensible? How can you take your uncle's money?"

Song Yongren thought to himself, "Song Lili already has a lot of money of her own, why would she need Wu Jiang's money? That's just being unreasonable."

Song Lili, however, only wanted to put Wu Jiang at ease and didn't want to keep pushing the matter back and forth with him, thinking she would quietly return it later.

However, Song Yongren's reaction was unexpectedly strong.

Before Song Lili could even speak, Wu Jiang objected, "Why can't I accept it? This is for the children, it has nothing to do with you."

"Besides, didn't you give Lele a lucky money yesterday? Are you allowed to give it, but I'm not?"

“This…this is different,” Song Yongren said anxiously.

"What's different?" Wu Jiang asked knowingly.

"This..." Song Yongren was speechless. Did he think he could say it was because I had money and you didn't? He wasn't stupid.

Song Lili shrugged at Song Yongren. See? She took it because she knew this would be the outcome.

In the end, even when Song Yong-ren took the stage himself, the result was still the same.

Song Lili didn't linger any longer. She pulled Song Fang out and went to the kitchen. She said to Song Fang, "Fangfang, go find a big bag. I'm going to prepare some things for my uncle so they can take them back."

Last year, we were given some vegetables; let's give us even more this year.

Song Lili divided the white sugar she bought in town in half, along with some pastries and raw melon seeds she bought on a whim.

After Song Fang brought the bag, she stuffed it at the bottom and said, "Come on, Fangfang, let's go pick some vegetables."

The two sisters quickly went to their private plot and picked some of each kind of vegetable. Fangfang even took a lot of the chili peppers, which she loved the most.

The two hugged each other tightly before going home. Before packing the vegetables, Song Lili secretly put the food she bought into a small bag as well.

Once everything was almost ready, Song Lili began to pack all the vegetables she had picked into the container.

By the time it was all packed, it was another long bag.

Song Lili tied the opening tightly with the rope, then patted the dirt off her clothes and went into the house to talk with Wu Jiang.

During the chat, I learned about Wu Huan's wife. As for meeting her, it will probably be a long time before I can.

However, Song Lili was neither curious nor eager to see him.

When Wu Jiang and Wu Huan were about to leave, they saw Song Lili carrying a large bag out of the kitchen, the bag bulging with contents.

Wu Jiang immediately understood what was going on. "Lili, take these things back quickly, I don't want them."

Song Lili wouldn't listen to him. She took the initiative and stuffed the food into Wu Huan's hands before saying to Wu Jiang, "Uncle, it's just some vegetables."

"No need, you're going to sell those vegetables for money. Why would you give them to me? You can sell them for money, or you can keep them for your family."

Song Lili was actually most afraid of this back-and-forth situation, but she still had to bite the bullet and say, "I have some at home, and quite a lot of them."

“If we want to eat, we can go to our private plot to pick some. This is for my aunt, cousin, and sister-in-law, so they can have a taste.”

"Your aunt and uncle don't need it, you should take it back quickly." As he spoke, he tried to stuff it into Song Lili's hand.

Song Lili refused to accept it, keeping her hands behind her back and backing away.

Wu Jiang had no choice but to give the money to Song Yongren, but Song Yongren refused. Then it was Song Jianshe's turn, and so on, until he had given it to everyone.

The Song family members refused to accept the gifts, and finally, he stood there helplessly, saying, "We really don't need these."

"Just take it. This is from Lili and the others for your uncle. Consider it a gift from them to show their respect. It's nothing special, but take it back and have a taste."

Finally, Song Yongren said earnestly, "This is something I have at home. If I didn't have it, I couldn't give it to you even if I wanted to. Just take it."

Wu Jiang had no choice but to leave with Wu Huan carrying the large bag.

Wu Huan didn't say much, but as he left, he thought to himself, "It seems my uncle's family is indeed living a better life. These dishes must have cost a lot of money."

Actually, Song Lili had considered growing vegetables in Wujiang greenhouses, but... she didn't dare to gamble on that.
