Chapter Eight: The Difference Between Her and Others

Therefore, she completely ignored Yang Mei's earlier instigation and Li Qinghua's persuasion, and directly attributed all the credit to Zhang Qinghua.

The work in the afternoon was even more tiring than in the morning. The temperature was high, and the barley stalks were very brittle from the sun, so they were easy to break when touched.

Those who glean in the fields are quite busy and have no time to straighten up and rest.

However, Song Lili felt fine. After resting, Zhang Qinghua had her follow behind him to pick up the ears of grain.

However, it seems that there are about the same number of tassels in the afternoon as in the morning, not as many, which puts her mind at ease and makes her breathe a sigh of relief.

His face was beaming with joy, and he even hummed a song in a good mood, swaying his thin body back and forth, having a wonderful time.

Zhang Qinghua turned his head, a smile in his eyes, and watched the girl not far away swaying her waist, moving her legs, and shaking her head. She looked so cute.

He casually stuffed the ears of barley he was holding into his pocket, a smile on his face that he himself didn't even realize, and continued cutting barley in a good mood.

After a whole day, Song Lili felt okay, not like the feeling of almost dying that she had imagined. Little did she know that someone had been quietly helping her with her work.

At night, lying on a bamboo mat, smelling an unpleasant odor emanating from somewhere, Song Lili couldn't sleep soundly.

She looked at the place in front of her, which seemed somewhat familiar, yet also somewhat unfamiliar. It resembled Hongqi Village, but there were some differences.

There seemed to be very few people in the village, and it was quiet all around, yet there was a sense of deathly stillness and oppression in the air.

There seemed to be a few more houses in the village, but they were all dilapidated, some without even doors, and the smell inside was unknown.

The place was eerily quiet, as if Song Lili was the only person in the entire Hongqi Village, making her uneasy and wondering what had happened.

From the Fifth Brigade to the Fourth Brigade, Song Lili didn't see a single person. She seemed to vaguely hear voices, but when she stopped to listen carefully, she couldn't hear anything.

With uncertain steps, Song Lili continued walking towards the Third Brigade. The further she walked, the more sounds she could hear, which relieved her.

Thankfully, there is indeed someone in the village. It seems something big is about to happen in the village.

Song Lili quickened her pace and soon arrived at the stage, but the scene she saw shocked her so much that she couldn't react.

She saw a large group of people raising their arms and shouting excitedly. She couldn't hear what they were shouting, but a girl's ferocious expression terrified Song Lili.

She recognized the girl; her name was Luo Juan, the daughter of village head Luo Weijia. She was probably the same age as Yang Mei, but she didn't want to have anything to do with Luo Weijia, nor did she play with Luo Juan, though she had a decent impression of her.

But now, the resentment in her eyes and the undisguised ruthlessness on her face forced her to redefine this girl.

Luo Juan, wearing a red armband, seemed to be the leader, shouting excitedly at the stage.

Song Lili's gaze shifted to the stage, but she was struck dumb, even more incredulous, her eyes widening as if to see it more clearly.

The people on the stage looked disheveled, their hair was messy, their clothes were tattered and torn in several places, but what alarmed Song Lili was the look in their eyes.

The person on the stage was Zhang Qinghua. He had his hands behind his back, was thin, and had dark and bluish patches on his face, making him look like a beggar on the street.

He stood numbly in the center of the stage, staring blankly at the excited crowd below, but his gaze remained unmoved.

Song Lili saw disappointment, despair, and seemingly a resolute determination in his eyes.

Suddenly, Song Lili burst into tears. She wanted to let the tears wash away her sorrow, but it had no effect whatsoever.

She wanted to push through the crowd, to get to "Li Qinghua's" side, to give him hope, to keep him from despairing, but she couldn't.

She couldn't squeeze in; she was always pushed aside by the crowd. She always felt like she was going around in circles, but she couldn't get out.

She was very anxious and flustered, but she knew she had to stay calm in order to find a way to prevent "Li Qinghua" from being harmed.

Her gaze suddenly fell on the red mark on Luo Juan's arm. She realized what these people were doing!

They were criticizing and denouncing those so-called bad elements.

But she had never heard her grandmother mention that her grandfather had been criticized and denounced before. What was going on?
