On the first day of the Lunar New Year, Song Lili got up early. She hadn't bought anything for the New Year this year except for some meat distributed by the production team and half a pound of rock sugar that Wang Daming had brought when he came. That was all.
On the first day of the Lunar New Year, children visit each other's homes to exchange New Year's greetings. At this time, few people give lucky money, but they can still give one or two pieces of dried potatoes or something similar.
Song Lili was generous; every child received candy.
However, she underestimated the allure of sugar to children, and in the end, almost all the children in the village came.
A whole bunch of children came over to wish her a Happy New Year, which made her both amused and exasperated.
By the afternoon, she had gone straight inside and refused to come out, hiding away.
There's nothing I can do. Too many children are coming, some even running over two or three times. At this rate, no amount of candy will help.
She'd given out most of the candy, leaving only the largest few. She'd save those for Fangfang.
As a result of Song Lili's actions, many children peeked around outside her house in the afternoon, but none of them saw Song Lili, so they had to give up.
The first day of the Lunar New Year passed just like that, and not many people from the Song family came to offer their New Year's greetings.
The next day, many sons-in-law would visit their fathers-in-law, but Song Lili's house remained quiet on the day her married daughter returned home.
On the other hand, Li Qinghua arrived at Yangmei's house early in the morning, and the courtyard sounded quite lively.
A moment later, Yang Tao led Zhang Qinghua in. Song Lili looked at them in surprise and asked, "Why are you here?"
Yang Tao squinted her eyes, looking very happy. "Brother Qinghua said he wanted to come to your house, and my sister asked me to bring him over."
Song Lili raised an eyebrow. Zhang Qinghua needed Yang Tao to bring him? And what was Zhang Qinghua doing here? Why did he go to Yang Mei's house again?
She had many questions in her mind, which was expressed by raising her eyebrows at Zhang Qinghua, as if to say, "Something's up."
Zhang Qinghua felt utterly helpless when he met her gaze.
What's going on in this girl's head? I wonder where her mind is wandering off to again.
Yang Tao left after bringing the goods, and quietly told Song Lili that she was going to see her brother-in-law.
After Yang Tao left, Song Lili didn't let Zhang Qinghua into the house. Instead, she asked curiously, "What are you doing at Yang Mei's house? Are you paying respects to your father-in-law? But it shouldn't be you here."
Zhang Qinghua shook his head helplessly. Sure enough, this girl wasn't thinking anything good, otherwise her eyes wouldn't have been so bright just now.
His voice was filled with helplessness: "Daqing dragged me here."
Zhang Qinghua didn't know what to say about Li Qinghua. He was so nervous about visiting his father-in-law that he ended up bringing him along.
Aren't you afraid of what others might say? Don't you even realize there's something wrong with it? Didn't you see the twitching muscles on Uncle Weimin's face?
Finally, having no other choice and feeling extremely embarrassed, he made an excuse to go to Song Lili's house and left. Little did he expect that the girl would start overthinking things again.
He felt terrible having such a friend.
Zhang Qinghua didn't want to continue the topic and changed the subject, "How is Uncle Yongren's leg? If he needs any help, just let me know."
Song Lili already considered Zhang Qinghua a friend, so of course she wouldn't be polite to him and immediately agreed, "Okay, I'll definitely let you know if I need anything."
"But why are you at Yangmei's house? Are you related?" Song Lili was still curious.
Zhang Qinghua was having a headache. Why couldn't this matter be resolved?
Feeling uncomfortable under Song Lili's gaze, yet unable to bear it, he finally stammered out what he had said.
"Daqing didn't dare to come by himself, so he dragged me along to bolster his courage."
"Is he really that timid?" Song Lili asked incredulously.
If he were really that timid, he wouldn't have traveled all the way from Hongqi Village to find Sister Yangmei on New Year's Eve. Song Lili didn't believe Daqing was timid at all.
"He was nervous, afraid of making mistakes in front of his father-in-law, and also afraid of embarrassment, so he asked me to help him out."
Song Lili was speechless. How could someone as smart as Li Qinghua come up with such a terrible idea?
When facing your father-in-law, is it always better to have more people around? Why have you suddenly become so stupid?
Then, she looked at Zhang Qinghua strangely and said, "Does his stupidity make you stupid too? Don't you think this is a bad thing?"
Zhang Qinghua felt exhausted just thinking about it. "I told him, but he wouldn't listen. He dragged me here, and I couldn't shake him off."
Otherwise, he wouldn't have been so embarrassed!
Song Lili kindly said, "Alright, then you can stay at my house until Daqing leaves."
Zhang Qinghua didn't say it, but he tacitly agreed.
Song Lili suddenly asked, "How is your greenhouse?" She didn't know if it had been damaged, but it was very likely gone.
Sure enough, Zhang Qinghua said, "It's been cut into strips and is no longer usable; the bamboo has also been trampled."
Song Lili sighed, feeling heartbroken for those things once again.
All that effort to buy was gone overnight.
She was downcast, but she also said optimistically, "As long as everyone is alright, that's good. Everyone's fine, everything will be alright."
"If something happens to a person, then even if all those things are perfectly intact, you won't be happy. So things are fine as they are now."
She took a deep breath, looked at Zhang Qinghua, her eyes sparkling, seemingly brimming with energy, and said, "Let's work together after the New Year, things will definitely get better and better."
This is the worst time yet; it can't get any worse than this.
Zhang Qinghua seemed to be bewitched, staring intently into Song Lili's eyes, and he heard a soft "hmm" escape from his throat.
Right now, all his attention was focused on Song Lili's expressive eyes. Those eyes were what attracted him the most.
