Chapter Fifty-Three: Breaking Through

After seeing off the Gu family, everyone finally breathed a sigh of relief, except for Song Yongren, who was not in a good mood.

Song Lili sighed. There was nothing she could do about it. She would have to figure it out herself.

After that day, life settled down. Song Lili did her washing and cleaning, and then it was New Year's Eve.

On New Year's Eve, welcoming the Kitchen God and staying up all night are things that every household in Hongqi Village does.

Unlike the Lunar New Year's Eve dinner, which is eaten later, New Year's Eve dinner is eaten earlier. So, before the sun had even set, Song Lili's family had already eaten dinner.

After the meal, people burn paper money for their relatives, wishing them a good New Year.

As soon as it got dark, Song Lili saw flames outside several houses, probably burning paper money.

Song Lili wasn't interested in this, so she let Song Yongren take Song Jianshe and Song Fang there while she waited in the house.

Song Lili had no idea how to stay up all night on New Year's Eve, since she had never had the memory of the whole family staying up together in her modern home.

I wonder what it was like to stay up all night in the 1960s.

Song Lili asked Song Yongren and learned that they had to eat again at midnight to celebrate the New Year.

So what should we do in the next few hours?

Helpless, Song Lili had no choice but to take Song Fang out for a walk. They couldn't just stay at home staring at each other, could they?

She couldn't find any topics to discuss with Song Yongren and the others, for fear of exposing herself.

However, just as the two of them reached their private plot, they heard voices.

Song Lili couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. Was there really someone who shared the same interests as her?

She had no interest in eavesdropping on others and was about to leave with Song Fang when she heard a familiar name.

Sister Yangmei?

Song Lili raised her eyebrows again. Was the person in front of her Sister Yang Mei?

Then you hear a male voice say, "Meimei, these are meat patties my family made tonight. I brought you two, so eat them quickly."

So, is this man Li Qinghua?

Next, the female voice cleared up Song Lili's doubts, "Brother Qinghua, this... you should let your uncle and aunt eat it. I don't need it; I have some at home."

Even if they are usually very poor, they will still eat meat during the Chinese New Year.

Besides, the production team slaughtered a pig for the New Year, and each household received a share.

Then, a somewhat domineering voice was heard from the boy: "Just eat what I gave you, don't worry about it."

A happy smile appeared on Song Lili's lips. She was pleased that the two had a good relationship.

So that's what they're like when they're alone! Her curiosity was completely satisfied.

Song Lili had no intention of disturbing them. She led Song Fang around a corner, hoping to find a quiet place where no one could be with them.

Just as I was about to turn past the simple iron-making furnace that the production team had built a few years ago during the Great Leap Forward, I heard a small sound again.

Song Lili couldn't help but wonder, could it be a tradition of people meeting in secret on New Year's Eve? Otherwise, why would they run into each other again after only a few steps?

She felt helpless. Couldn't someone like her find a quiet place to be alone for a while? She was still feeling sad.

Although I don't have much affection for that family, I still miss my grandmother and my younger brother.

The bayberries I see now are from when my grandmother was young. I can't tell her about my feelings, let alone tell her about my rebirth. I can only keep it to myself.

It's even more painful during such a special time as the Lunar New Year.

So, can't we make room for her?

She was about to leave when she suddenly heard the words "Song family." Curious about which Song family it was, she stopped in her tracks.

He gestured to Song Fang not to make a sound either, since eavesdropping was very bad, and it wouldn't be good if she got caught.

Song Lili listened intently and heard an angry voice say, "Don't think I don't know you've tampered with things too. What right do you have to accuse me of this?"

Another voice, also filled with malice, said, "Hmph, what evidence do you have that I tampered with things? If you have no evidence, I advise you not to spout nonsense."

Song Lili frowned. This wasn't a lovers' date? Otherwise, why were there two grown men?

Song Lili realized she might have stumbled upon a secret, and now she was in a dilemma.

If I leave and make a sound, then it will be impossible to explain myself.

But if we don't leave, it would be even worse if we were discovered.

Song Lili was still in a dilemma when the two people on the other end started arguing, giving her no chance to choose.

"Hmph, his family's work points were altered. I saw it with my own eyes. Are you still trying to deny it?"

"You... fine, it's best to keep this to yourself. I'll help you later."
