Chapter Fifty-Two: Confrontation

Song Lili interjected quietly, "If you can't count on them, why are you asking for food?"

Gu casually replied, "Wasn't the grain stolen by bandits?" She wouldn't tell anyone that she still had grain at home.

Song Lili didn't give her time to react. "Since the grain was stolen, why didn't you agree when I asked you to borrow grain from others? Are you not going to eat from now on?"

"If you borrow it, you have to pay it back. If you're going to borrow it, I'll take it back. I won't use Yongli..."

Gu Shi didn't notice that Song Lili had dug a pit for her and jumped right in. As she was talking, she suddenly realized what was going on under the changing gazes of the people around her.

Those little thoughts in my heart can't be told to outsiders!

However, everyone heard it.

Song Lili noticed that several people in the crowd were shaking their heads, looking unconvinced.

The younger ones were more direct, saying things like, "Is this old woman heartless? Could she not be his biological son?"

"That's exactly right, otherwise what kind of mother would do such a thing?"

"Hey, this old woman, her eldest son is a treasure, but her youngest son is just weeds."

"It's not even as good as grass."

"Yes, yes, at least the grass is still alive, but this doesn't even give it a way to survive."

...

Gu Shi did not expect that his words would cause such a big reaction. Realizing that Song Lili was deliberately leading her, she glared at Song Lili as if she wanted to devour her.

Song Lili shrugged. "That's not what she said, it's what my adoptive grandmother said!"

She only provoked him a little, and then achieved her goal.

Gu was helpless; the comments around her were like stripping her clothes off and exposing her to the public.

She felt ashamed.

In her old age, to be cursed and insulted by the villagers behind her back was a first for her. How could she not be angry and ashamed?

Suddenly, Gu let out a "howl" and rushed towards Song Lili, about to slap her to vent her anger.

Song Lili was constantly watching Gu Shi, so how could she let her hit her? She moved her feet silently to dodge the attack and reached out to help Gu Shi up with a worried expression.

While everyone's attention was focused on Gu Shi, and they exclaimed that she was about to fall, someone stretched out a foot and kicked Gu Shi's shin with all their might, causing her to fall down as well.

Song Lili did these things in a very short time, but to outsiders, it looked like she fell down while trying to catch her grandmother who was rushing towards her.

Moreover, in order to prevent her grandmother from getting hurt, she lay down at the bottom, allowing Gu Shi to lie on top of her.

"Hiss..." Song Lili gasped, her knee was probably scraped again.

She braced herself against Gu Shi with her arm, preventing Gu Shi from hitting her, but her knee must have been badly injured again.

“Mom…Lili…”

“Lili…”

"elder sister……"

The three members of the Song family were so frightened that they rushed over. Even Song Yongren, disregarding his newly reattached leg, quickly reached the two of them.

Several of the onlookers also came over to help.

"Lili, how are you? Does anything hurt?"

"Lili, are you alright?"

"elder sister……"

Everyone looked at Song Lili with concern, after all, she was the one at the very bottom, and not only did she fall, she was also hit.

Song Lili coughed a few times forcefully before saying breathlessly, "It's nothing, it's nothing, I'm fine..."

"How can you say you're alright? Your knee is still injured. Does it hurt anywhere? You must tell your father if you feel uncomfortable..."

Song Yongren paced anxiously outside, watching as everyone hurriedly helped Gu Shi and Song Lili up.

Afraid that Song Yongren would worry, Song Lili quickly shook her head and said, "I'm fine, nothing hurts."

Little did she know that her eagerness would only make people disbelieve her and think she was hiding something.

Those who came to help then learned that Song Lili had a leg injury and immediately praised her, saying, "Lili is such a good girl..."

"Yes, yes, even with his own leg injured, he still thinks of taking care of his grandma. He's such a filial child."

Gu was so angry that she felt dizzy. Her calves were burning with pain and she could hardly feel them anymore.

She pointed at Song Lili and said, "You damned thing, how dare you kick your old mother, you unfilial brat!" As she spoke, she was about to hit Song Lili.

Song Lili looked aggrieved and didn't dare to lift her head, afraid that she wouldn't be able to hold back her laughter.

On the contrary, the person who was helping couldn't stand it anymore and said, "Auntie, everyone saw it. You hit Lili and made yourself fall."
