Chapter Forty-Eight: My Heart Aches

Song Lili didn't hesitate and immediately leaned on Zhang Qinghua's back; she simply couldn't hold on any longer.

If she were alone, she could grit her teeth and persevere, but with Zhang Qinghua's arrival, she had someone to rely on, and she could no longer hold on.

After climbing onto Zhang Qinghua's back, she suddenly felt pain all over her body; there wasn't a single part that felt good.

She dared not move, for any movement would cause her pain, so she could only lie there stiffly.

She was still worried about Song Fang, but now that Zhang Qinghua had arrived, she was no longer afraid of Chu Ci and immediately asked Zhang Qinghua to go find Song Fang.

“I’ve found Song Fang. Shall I take you there?” Zhang Qinghua asked Song Lili.

Song Lili breathed a sigh of relief, which meant that Song Fang had hidden herself well and was not injured.

She wouldn't feel at ease unless she saw the person in person.

When they arrived at the spot where Chu Ci had been killed, they only saw a pool of blood; Chu Ci was nowhere to be seen.

Seeing that he had disappeared, Song Lili did not tell Zhang Qinghua what had just happened, and was eager to see Song Fang.

When I saw Song Fang, she was still squatting behind the big tree, just like when Song Lili left, without moving.

It was already dawn, and Song Fang's pale face and the fear and anxiety in her eyes were clearly visible.

Song Lili couldn't help but sigh. This time, Fangfang was still frightened, and she didn't know when she would recover.

She struggled to get down, holding Song Fang's hand, wanting to give her warmth and courage.

When Song Fang saw Song Lili, her eyes immediately lit up, and her worries subsided. She opened her mouth, wanting to ask a question, but no sound came out.

Song Lili affectionately stroked her hair. "Fangfang is so brave and obedient. She's great."

She kept encouraging Song Fang and led her, limping, down the mountain.

I wonder how Song Yongren and Song Jianshe are doing right now.

On their way down the mountain, the three of them saw many other people slowly walking home, but they all looked very unwell.

Some people looked disheveled, while others, though appearing alright, were pale.

Of course, there were also some happy people, their smiles impossible to hide – those families who were safe and sound and whose food supplies had been saved.

As Song Lili descended the mountain, she did not see any sign of Song Yongren or Song Jianshe, which made her even more worried.

When I got home, I saw a complete mess, as if it had been ransacked.

The farm tools were scattered about, the doors of the several mud-brick houses were all wide open, and the kitchen floor was covered with straw.

Upon entering the house, a few scattered pieces of clothing lay on the floor, and the bamboo mat on the kang (a heated brick bed) had been torn down, leaving only the bare kang.

Song Lili breathed a huge sigh of relief, feeling fortunate that her house hadn't been burned down. Compared to those families who lost their houses altogether, they were much better off.

Thinking of her greenhouse, Song Lili disregarded everything else at home and rushed to her private plot, which was her "lifeline".

However, looking at the mess in her private plot, Song Lili was almost ready to swear.

The three small greenhouses she had painstakingly built were now completely destroyed. The plastic sheeting hung tattered on the bamboo, all cut into strips by someone else.

The vegetables in the greenhouse were scattered here and there. Some had been pulled up, some had been trampled into the mud, and some looked like they had been gnawed on, leaving only the stalks.

Looking at the plastic sheet swaying in the wind, Song Lili felt a lump in her throat, but she couldn't get it out.

I couldn't help but curse, "These bastards!"

That was her hard work; she was counting on those vegetables to have a good New Year, but it was destroyed overnight.

Song Lili felt like crying right now.

It's that kind of agonizing feeling of hope being shattered, that desperate urge to cry.

She plopped down on the ground, feeling her knees hurt even more now; they burned and throbbed with pain.

At this moment, Song Lili had only one feeling: pain. Not only was her heart aching, but her body was also in pain.

She looked at the completely destroyed greenhouse with tears welling up in her eyes, as if she wanted to cry but couldn't.

Zhang Qinghua had been following Song Lili the whole time and had seen what the greenhouse looked like. He didn't know how to comfort her.

He knew the greenhouse was very important to her. It was like a child he had raised with his own hands, only to have it ruined.

Not to mention Song Lili, even he himself felt sorry for her.

It's already ruined, all I can do is feel sorry for it.

He squatted down in front of Song Lili and said to her, "As long as you're alright, that's good. We can take care of these things later. Do you need your knee treated?"

Zhang Qinghua didn't want to talk about this topic, so he changed the subject, "And Fangfang, go and see if she's injured anywhere."

Reminded by Zhang Qinghua, Song Lili immediately understood, struggled to her feet, and went to her own yard.

Zhang Qinghua is right. As long as people are safe, nothing else matters. These things can be regained.

Thinking this way, Song Lili felt less upset and decided to just consider it as... giving it away.

But I still feel so heartbroken.

Song Fang had no wounds, but she was terribly frightened and couldn't say a word. She felt very uneasy whenever she was alone.

Song Lili had no choice but to rely on time to help her recover.

After waiting for a while, Song Lili couldn't sit still any longer and wanted to go find Song Yongren and Song Jianshe.

Zhang Qinghua stopped her, saying, "Your knees hurt, so don't go. I'll go. I'm faster, and I'll come back and tell you as soon as I find it."
