Chapter Twenty-Eight: Buying Plastic Sheet

However, Song Lili was confident that she could earn those two yuan.

But Song Yongren's heart was heavy. With these two yuan, his family already had eight yuan in debt. When would they be able to pay it off?

But when Song Lili asked him, "Uncle, how much money did our family borrow? And from whom did we borrow it?"

"You don't need to worry about these things. Just do what you need to do." Song Yongren only mentioned it briefly and did not tell Song Lili the specific amount.

Song Lili was about to ask another question when a voice interrupted her, "Uncle Yongren, what did you buy?"

Song Lili looked in the direction of the sound and saw a woman in her forties with a large face, slanted eyes, a big mouth, and high cheekbones not far away.

Song Lili recognized the person; it was Qin Hongxia's mother, Zhang Laidi. Qin Hongxia was with her, carrying many things on her back.

Song Lili glanced at Zhang Laidi, who looked light on, then at Qin Hongxia, whose back was bent from the weight, and simply called her "Auntie".

Zhang Laidi ignored Song Lili and stared intently at the plastic sheet in Song Yongren's hand, exclaiming in an exaggerated manner, "Oh, what did you buy?"

"Oh dear, is this plastic sheeting? Uncle Yongren, your family can afford to buy such useless stuff as plastic sheeting? When did you start owing us money? We're almost starving."

Song Lili curled her lip, "You think I'm kidding? They're just looking for trouble after they bought something!"

But Song Yongren's face flushed red. The tall man looked like a child who had done something wrong and said in a low voice, "Auntie, wait a little longer. I'll pay it back at the end of the year."

Zhang Laidi glanced at the plastic sheeting again and said sarcastically, "Why would you need it at the end of the year? I see you have so much money that you're buying plastic sheeting. Why don't you pay back the money you owe my family first? It's not good to always owe people money."

This made Song Yongren even more flustered and uneasy.

Song Lili quickly said, "Auntie, let's wait a few more days. We've already spent almost all of the money on plastic sheeting today. We'll definitely pay it back in two or three months."

"Really?" Zhang Laidi asked in disbelief.

How could Zhang Laidi, as a neighbor, not know about Song Yongren's family situation?

Although we can get a share of money at the end of the year, we need to keep some in case of emergency. Otherwise, where will we find spare money to pay back others?

But as soon as Song Lili said that, Zhang Laidi immediately seized the opportunity: "Alright, I'll wait. If it's not returned by the New Year at the latest, I'll come to your door to ask for it. Don't say that your aunt is making things difficult for you."

Song Lili smiled and said, "Don't worry, Auntie, I'll definitely pay you back before the New Year." Before Zhang Laidi could say anything more, she continued, "Auntie, my uncle and I are going home now; we have things to do!"

He grabbed Song Yongren and drove away.

Zhang Laidi spat angrily, watching the backs of the father and daughter, and said fiercely, "Hmph, I'll wait and see. If they don't return it before the New Year, I'll go to their house and make a scene."

Then, she turned around and yelled, "Get out of here! Can't you see it's already midday? You're treated like a young lady, sleeping until the sun is high in the sky. You won't even know how you starved to death."

Qin Hongxia clenched her fists, her nails digging into her flesh, causing her excruciating pain, but she dared not utter a word.

For some reason, she suddenly looked in the direction where Song Lili and Song Yongren had left. Seeing Song Lili so light and free, and then looking at the things she was carrying like a mule, her eyes turned red with envy.

Why? Why can Song Lili not have to take anything? Why is she treated like livestock, scolded and driven around?

She was unwilling to accept it!

Why isn't she a child of the Song family? Why isn't Song Yongren her uncle? Why can't she have someone who cares for her?

Zhang Laidi turned around and saw Qin Hongxia's indignant look. She immediately slapped her on the back of the head and said, "What are you standing there for? Hurry up and get going. There's still work to be done in the fields!"

The slap caused Qin Hongxia to stumble and nearly fall. By the time she regained her balance, Zhang Laidi was already far away.

She glanced one last time in the direction Song Lili had left, bit her lip, and hurried after Zhang Laidi, but she was still unwilling to accept it.

Song Lili, who had gone far away, had no idea that Qin Hongxia was filled with envy, jealousy, and hatred towards her. But even if she did know, she probably wouldn't care.

She is now completely focused on building the greenhouse and has no interest in anything else.

As soon as she got home, she immediately dragged Song Jianshe around the house, because she needed the kind of small bamboo that rural people use to make brooms.

She wanted to use small bamboo sticks, about the thickness of chopsticks and with leaves attached, to support the plastic sheeting.

This is all the resources she can find right now.

She had seen her father do it before, and he helped her the whole time. She thought she could do it too.
