Chapter Twenty-Nine: Song Fang's Cry

In the corner of Song Yongren and Song Jianshe's room, the two found a large bundle of spare bamboo.

These bamboos haven't been processed yet, and they're all uneven. Song Lili asked Song Jianshe to pick out the longest ones.

Then cut off the thinnest part at the tip, leaving a part at least as thick as the tip of a chopstick, and then soak it in water.

Song Lili was worried that if these bamboos were left for too long, they would lose moisture and become less flexible, and might suddenly break.

Soaking it in water can help restore some of the bamboo and reduce the number of broken bamboo pieces, since she didn't pick out many.

Song Jianshe did all the work by himself; Song Lili only told him how to do it, but didn't do it herself.

She felt she couldn't just talk the talk without walking the walk, so she took a hoe and went to the private plot behind the house to turn over the soil where she had just pulled up the vegetables.

As she turned the leaves, Song Lili wondered whether or not to fertilize the plant.

She was determined to make greenhouses a success, and the future prospects were very good; it was just that the timing wasn't right.

Later, Song Lili felt there was no need to think so much; it was too early, and it was better to base her thinking on reality.

"Sir, if I want to fertilize the fields, can I just use manure from the pigsty?"

Song Yongren said with difficulty, "Lili, that belongs to the brigade. We can't give it to our own private plots, or the brigade leader will punish us!"

Song Lili cursed inwardly, "Damn it, even the shit belongs to the public? That's so perverted!"

Then I started to worry: the manure can't be moved, the soil lacks fertilizer, and the vegetables won't grow well!

So, how can we make the land more fertile?

Oh right, Song Lili suddenly remembered what her grandmother used to do: she could use wood ash! But, is wood ash a public good?

"Sir, does the ash from when we burn the kang (heated brick bed) belong to the brigade?"

"No, that's not it. People can deal with the ash themselves. Many families mix it into their manure."

Song Lili jumped up happily, "That's great!" Finally, she didn't have to worry too much.

Although wood ash is not as fertilizing as manure, it's better than nothing, and it's good to have some.

She hoeed the ground and waited for the bamboo to become soft enough. Then she shaped it into a semicircle, buried both ends in the soil, covered it with plastic sheeting, and the simple greenhouse was ready.

Song Lili measured the size of the plastic sheet, and based on its width and the size of the bamboo that could be made into a semicircle, determined the area to be planted.

Then, dig a narrow trench at both ends to bury the bamboo.

After completing all the preparations, Song Lili realized that someone seemed to be missing from the house. "Grandpa, where's Fangfang? Did she go out to play?"

Song Jianshe said in the yard, "Yang Tao came and said she wanted to go herd the pigs together. The two of them drove the pigs to the back."

Song Lili didn't pay any attention to it. Song Fang and Yang Tao had been getting along well lately, and the two of them often went out to play together, such as digging for wild vegetables.

Although she is timid, she is not afraid once she is familiar with something.

Song Lili was a little anxious and wanted to get the greenhouse ready as soon as possible, but when she tried, the bamboo was still very easy to break.

Song Jianshe was still very worried. "Lili, is this okay? Don't ruin the stuff!"

Song Lili rolled her eyes. "How do you know I wasted things? Da Da didn't say anything. You just do your job. Don't be too enamored with me when the vegetables are actually planted."

Hmph, let me show you what I'm capable of, otherwise you'll always think I'm useless at everything.

Song Jianshe nodded, "Okay, I'll wait for the vegetables you grow, and I'll look forward to admiring you."

However, I still can't help but shake my head. This little sister has become much more lively, has more mischievous ideas, and says more strange things.

Amid Song Lili's anxiety, the bamboo finally matured by evening. Song Lili picked up one and bent it with all her might, bending it to 180 degrees without breaking it—perfect.

Seeing that it was the perfect time, they immediately pulled Song Jianshe to bury it.

The temperature was just right, and there was no sun; everything was perfect.

"Lili, do you need my help?" Song Yongren asked.

"No need, Daddy, my brother is fine. You can rest. Let my brother do the heavy lifting," Song Lili said with a grin.

Song Jianshe raised his hand, pretending to hit Song Lili, saying, "All you do is bully me and enslave me to work for you."

Song Lili smiled brightly, "Then I'll pay you your wages when I earn money." Then, before Song Jianshe could speak, she added, "But I owe you for now."

She has no money now, so what kind of salary is she getting?

Song Jianshe watched his sister run off into the distance, not taking her words to heart. They were just joking; they were siblings.

This wasn't a technical job; the brother and sister worked together and quickly buried the bamboo, spacing them about thirty centimeters apart.

Fearing it wouldn't be sturdy enough, Song Lili buried two bamboo poles together and pressed them down with her hand, feeling that they could withstand some force.

Looking at the row of bamboo in front of her, which was about three meters long, Song Lili felt a sense of pride.

Look, what she wanted to do is already being achieved step by step.

At the end of September, it wasn't dark yet, so I finished cooking just as other people were having dinner.

Meanwhile, Song Yongren was calling out from outside, "Lili, Jianshe, are you done yet? Hurry up and come out for dinner."

“Coming…” Song Lili responded loudly.

Seeing the contented smile on his daughter's face, Song Yongren knew she was happy, and he was happy too. "Is it done?"

"Yes, it's done. All we need to do is plant the seeds and put the plastic sheet on tomorrow." It will be finished tomorrow.

Song Yongren nodded and said, "Okay, you can handle it yourself."

Song Yongren himself didn't understand either; he just did whatever the children told him to do.
