After joining the army, Su Zhi felt that he had found the right path for himself.
Just like my older sister used to be, once you find your goal, just keep walking towards it, work hard, and walk wholeheartedly. As long as you go further than others, you will be successful in the future.
Su Zhi felt that he had finally found his goal.
He wants to become a battalion commander who earns 100 yuan a month!
If he could earn 100 yuan a month, my older sister would be very happy. Then he would be the highest earner in the family. He could pay back the 1,000 yuan debt and save a large sum of money.
Thinking about how excited and happy his older sister was that he would send 100 yuan back home every month, Su Zhi felt full of energy.
He wanted to be a useful person and make his older sister proud.
Anyway, he was in good health and had inexhaustible energy. Fortunately, his older sister had arranged for him to participate in training in the military police force, and he also insisted on physical training while resting at home, so his body was stronger than that of the other recruits.
The only difference is that he's a little less capable than kids from military compounds, who have the resources and awareness to be nurtured from a young age. But Su Zhi doesn't think it matters. He's not going to compete with anyone; he just needs to achieve his own goals.
"Su Zhi, aren't you going to rest?"
Two young recruits, dressed in military green cotton-padded uniforms and wearing large hats, ran over and shouted.
Su Zhi is practicing his arm strength, doing stretching exercises on the horizontal bar.
Hearing someone shout, he ignored it and did another ten or so in one go, completing his task for the day before coming down from up there.
Looking at his two good buddies from the same compound, he wiped his sweat and asked, "What brings you two here?"
A dark-skinned young man put his arm around his shoulder. "Looking for you? I knew you'd be here. What are you training here in the dead of winter? We're still new recruits, don't expect so much from us."
"My sister believes that you have to have high standards for yourself in order to meet low standards."
"Why is it your sister again?" A burly young man next to him laughed. "Su Zhi, why do you listen to your sister in everything?"
"Of course, everything my sister says makes sense," Su Zhi said proudly. "I was able to become an outstanding recruit because of my sister."
The others stared at him speechlessly.
The dark-faced young man said, "Su Zhi, you became an outstanding recruit because of your own hard work. What does it have to do with your sister? What are you thinking?"
Su Zhi rolled his eyes at him, put on his hat, and walked towards the dormitory, saying, "My sister taught me so much. I work so hard because she taught me so well. My sister is 99% perspiration and 1% achievement. If someone like you works so hard, how can someone as ordinary as me not work hard? My sister also said, 'Sweat more in training, bleed less on the battlefield. My sister also…'"
He was just about to look down when he saw his two best buddies listening intently. Suddenly, he stopped thinking about it.
Why should he? His sister taught him all of this. Why should he be compared to others?
I simply shut up and went back to my dorm.
The other two, unable to see him, quickly put their arms around his neck, one on each side.
"Su Zhi, what did your sister do? She's with us. I'll go tell my dad later and give him a big surprise."
"Yes, your sister's reasoning is quite reasonable. Come on, tell us."
"No, no, that's all!" Su Zhi said proudly.
In the company commander's office, Company Commander Xu held his teacup, watching the figure outside walk further and further away, before returning to his desk and sitting down. He said to Instructor Sun of the company, "That kid is really good at enduring hardship. I initially thought he wouldn't be able to stick it out, but since winter started, he hasn't stopped working."
Instructor Sun asked, "What, you've taken a liking to it?"
"Good soldier, everyone can see that Zheng still needs more training." Company Commander Xu took a sip of tea. "Soldiers who haven't been on the battlefield are always lacking something."
Instructor Sun sighed, "I wish they would never have to go to the battlefield."
...
On New Year's Eve, the Su family got up early to prepare the New Year's Eve dinner.
Old Lady Liu had originally planned to go back to her family's place for the New Year, but Su Yu kept her there. Her reason was that they were all family, and the New Year should be a time for family reunion. Su Yu even gave Old Lady Liu a one-yuan red envelope, which made Old Lady Liu extremely happy.
So she stayed at Old Su's house with peace of mind to prepare the New Year's Eve dinner.
Su Yu then took some time to visit the Song family and deliver New Year's gifts to the two elders.
Mr. and Mrs. Song were still disappointed that their son couldn't come home for the New Year, so they decided to have Su Yu stay at home for a family reunion dinner.
"I'm planning to go to Jinhe County."
"ah?"
Mr. and Mrs. Song looked surprised.
“Dongzheng is spending the New Year alone over there. I’ll go over and have New Year’s Eve dinner with him, stay for two days and then come back.”
Hearing Su Yu's words, Song Ma looked relieved and took Su Yu's hand, saying, "If Dong Zheng treats you badly in the future, I'll beat him up."
Mr. Song said, "I should be the one saying that. I'm ready to beat that brat anytime."
Su Yu pursed her lips and smiled shyly.
She knew the loneliness of spending New Year's Eve alone. While every household was filled with laughter and joy, sitting alone in the house, even facing a table full of food, still felt lonely.
She had tried to spend New Year's Eve with those people, but seeing their forced smiles, she preferred to spend it alone.
Now she has someone to spend New Year's Eve with, and they will spend every year together from now on.
After Su Yu left, Song Ma said with a smile, "Our Dongzheng is so lucky, he's found a good girl."
