Chapter 69

Despite his temper tantrum, business still needed to be done. Director Gao and other factory leaders held a meeting, and then began recruiting temporary workers.

The recruitment targets were primarily veteran textile factory workers. These were long-time employees; despite their textile work, their sewing skills were also quite good. Having dealt with fabrics all their lives, and having made many clothes at home, they had honed their skills over decades. The remaining positions were reserved for existing garment factory workers.

The factory didn't have any garment-making machines; everything had to be done manually. However, the power of the people is great. In the warehouse that had been cleared out of the factory, they were quickly organized and started assembly line operations.

As the one who proposed this matter, Su Yu was sent by Chairman Sun to supervise the progress of the work.

Seeing that the factory was producing more and more clothes, Su Yu felt that once the factory started to reap the benefits, this job might become unstoppable.

From now on, she won't be able to deal in fabrics anymore; she'll have to deal in ready-made garments. After all, ready-made garments are more profitable.

That evening, Liu Mei returned home and excitedly looked at Su Yu, "Sister, I heard that your textile factory is going to sell a batch of garments to our factory, is that true?"

Su Yu looked up at her while holding the book. "Yes, that's true. What's wrong? Are you buying new clothes too? Those are for the comrades who are going to social events."

"...Sister, I was just asking." Liu Mei smiled awkwardly.

Seeing her like this, Su Yu continued reading her book, but then said, "It's not that we can't buy them, since I'm in charge of this matter. However, the price for one or two sets is too high. If you take ten or eight sets, I can talk to the factory about it."

"Ten or eight sets?" Liu Mei was stunned.

Su Yu said, "You think it's too much? Others think it's too little. Everyone in the family needs new clothes, for the bride's family, the groom's family, and relatives and friends. There aren't enough to go around. That's why the factory doesn't allow us to take them one by one anymore. If you want to take them, take more. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Upon hearing this, Su Lin ran over and asked, "Sister, is it true? Can I take it?"

Do you have money?

"Well... I don't have any money, but my classmate does. He's willing to buy it. Can we help him get some?"

“In principle, I don’t agree to this. But you’re my sister, so I’ll definitely agree. Okay, you can get the sizes and give them to me later. But I can’t guarantee the style, and the price is the same as what the steel mill set. You can’t usually get this price.”

Su Lin nodded excitedly.

She's very popular in her class.

Seeing that Su Lin had also placed an order, Liu Mei quickly said, "Sister, I want one too! Sister, I'll ask when I go home tomorrow if you can bring me a few as well."

"Okay, Metropolitan School"

Su Yu accepted all offers. This was all money! She could find some defective products, lower the price, and make some extra money in the process.

The textile factory was doing very well, and the garment factory soon heard the news.

Upon hearing this news, the garment factory director immediately filed a complaint with the municipal party committee.

Isn't this just messing around? They've crossed the line!

You, a textile worker, are messing around with garment manufacturing? That's ignoring the production targets set by the authorities. You'd be better off focusing on actual production. Why are you dabbling in this shady business?

When Director Gao received the call from the municipal party committee, he was both angry and worried. He immediately ran to the trade union to find Chairman Sun.

"Old Sun, what's going on here? With the garment factory doing this, are we even allowed to continue our work?"

Chairman Sun looked at Su Yu.

Su Yu then spoke up, "We have to do it. Director Gao, the garment factory is a classic case of sour grapes. They haven't thought about the welfare of their workers, but we're trying our best to take care of them, and yet we're being sued. Our action is perfectly justified."

She counted on her fingers, "First, we're not using any machinery, so it doesn't affect production. Second, we're doing this to increase the workers' income. Chairman Mao said, 'Self-reliance leads to abundance,' so if we let the workers do some work and have a prosperous New Year, they'll be very happy. We can also let the municipal party committee investigate the workers' wishes themselves, respecting democracy. Third, this is the steel mill's demand; the steel mill's workers are happy to buy the clothes we make. It just means the garment factory hasn't done a good job."

Upon hearing Su Yu's reasons, Director Gao and Chairman Sun exchanged glances. Director Gao gave Su Yu a thumbs up, "Su, those are excellent reasons."

He suddenly felt confident.

"I need to go to the municipal party committee immediately to report our situation." Director Gao stood up and was about to leave when he suddenly remembered something and turned back, saying, "Old Sun, let Su come with me."

Chairman Sun squinted and said, "Your factory committee isn't short of people, why are you trying to take it from me?"

Factory Director Gao: "..."

Seeing that Director Gao had been humiliated, Chairman Sun was overjoyed. He then said to Su Yu, "Alright, Su, you should go with Director Gao. The bigger picture is more important."

Su Yu nodded, "Okay, Chairman Sun."

On the way, Director Gao looked at Su Yu and sighed inwardly, wondering why he had put her under Old Sun's wing in the first place. She was practically one of his subordinates before.

"Su, have you ever thought about coming to work at the factory committee?"

Su Yu smiled and said, "I'm like a brick in the factory, I'll go wherever I'm needed. The union still needs me now, but I haven't moved. However, Director Gao, I actually have some suggestions regarding this matter."

Factory Director Gao immediately perked up, "What suggestion do you have?"

"Our factory currently has too few machines. Even if the workers work in several shifts, the output will only increase by so much. We really can't get any more machines."
