Fan Xiaofan led Fu Weidong back to their residence. Just as they reached the corner of the building, a figure rushed down like a cannonball.
The stairs are dangerous and don't even have railings.
If it were hit like that, it would probably roll several times.
Fortunately, they happened to be close to the corner of the staircase wall. Fan Xiaofan quickly pulled Fu Weidong back to steady herself and also pulled back the child who was about to rush down.
The child was pale and thin. When he saw the coarse grain bun in Fan Xiaofan's hand, he reached out to snatch it.
His hands were still covered in dirty snot.
Fu Weidong reached out to push her away, trying to snatch the food back. In those days, stealing food was an irreconcilable feud.
Fan Xiaofan glanced at the steamed bun that the child was holding, which was stained with some unknown substance. To be honest, she wouldn't mind the dirt...
That's absolutely a lie.
She pursed her lips: "Tell me how you fell down from upstairs, and I'll give you this steamed bun."
The child clutched the steamed bun to his chest, possessively saying, "I was so hungry I was dizzy. I came down to find something to fill my stomach, but then everything went black and I couldn't see where I was going."
Fan Xiaofan couldn't quite describe how she felt. To be honest, the hardships she was facing were just the tip of the iceberg.
"Be more careful next time. Falling down the stairs like that can crack your head."
The child, however, seemed oblivious, only swallowing hard: "They really gave me this cornbread?"
Fan Xiaofan's face turned serious: "I promised to give you the steamed bun, so of course you can have it. But you shouldn't have taken it from me. Do you know you were wrong?"
The child looked up at her innocently: "What's wrong with that? As long as I eat it, it's worth getting a beating."
She takes such a distorted sense of right and wrong for granted.
Fan Xiaofan suddenly thought of a saying: "When the granaries are full, people know etiquette." For a child who is hungry, he doesn't know right from wrong. He only knows that he is hungry and in extreme discomfort. He is not even afraid of death, let alone injury.
Fu Weidong glared angrily at the child: "If you steal our things again next time, I'll beat you to death."
A tiny dumpling spoke threateningly, but the child didn't bother to listen and was wolfing down the cornbread.
Fan Xiaofan remembered that the child was one of a group of children following the "enthusiastic" aunt. After going upstairs, she thought for a moment and said as she passed by, "Auntie, please keep an eye on the child. I just saw him almost fall down the stairs..."
The woman's attention was focused on the relatively clean-looking baby boy she was holding. Hearing this, she waved her hand dismissively and said, "What's there to be afraid of? Kids are tough..."
Fan Xiaofan didn't know what to say for a moment. As soon as she returned to the house, she heard a series of scolding and beatings coming from outside: "You little brat, are you trying to get yourself killed? You dare to eat such a big cornbread? Are you a reincarnated starving ghost? ...Your brother hasn't eaten yet, is it your turn to eat?"
The cornbread was too spicy for her throat, and she was caught red-handed by her mother before she had even finished eating it. She wasn't afraid at all, and kept dodging and weaving, managing to stuff in as many bites as she could. She knew that once the food was in her mother's hands, it would definitely go to her younger brother, and she wouldn't get a single bite.
The coarse grain porridge I made for lunch was enough to fill my younger brother up to half, but the others could only manage to get a little watery slurry. Otherwise, she wouldn't have experienced dizziness and blurred vision on the stairs...
However, she smacked her lips, thinking that she was lucky today and had met a sucker.
