Chapter 13 Reunion

School officially began on Thursday and Friday. Yuan Fangguo recalled that, if he remembered correctly, the country's true two-day weekend began with Labor Day in 1995. Before that, people only had one day off each week, and for ordinary workers, Sunday was known as "Battle Sunday." They'd be busy from morning till night, cleaning, buying groceries, and visiting friends and family. This work system didn't allow for a good rest, and it also affected work efficiency.

In March 1994, the country implemented a trial of the "five-day workweek" system. People generally called the two-day weekend a "big weekend" and the one-day weekend a "small weekend." The big weekend and the small weekend were implemented alternately.

For students majoring in Chinese like Yuan Fangguo, university courses seem to be more about talent.

College is completely different from high school, especially for college students of this generation. Many of them have long lost the hard-working spirit of studying that they had in the 1970s and 1980s. Many of them even sleep, read, and write letters in class.

Bashu University has always been known for its openness and inclusiveness, and it pursues a harmonious and beautiful learning atmosphere. Professors do not have too many extravagant demands for classroom discipline.

Of course, roll call is still something that must be done every day, and no one can escape it.

Business was indeed getting worse day by day. Yuan Fangguo's profit on Thursday and Friday was only about one or two yuan a day, barely enough to cover his living expenses.

This thing really can't last long.

Yuan Fangguo couldn't help but sigh in his heart.

In the blink of an eye, their first Sunday of school arrived.

Sun Kejian got up early in the morning, took a shower, and put on mousse. It seemed that he was going on a date.

During his previous bragging, Yuan Fangguo knew that Sun Kejian’s girlfriend was studying English at a normal university a few kilometers away from them.

Gao Dapeng still did the questions like a nerd.

Yi Juntao also made an appointment with some fellow villagers to go out and play on the weekend, because there were said to be a few girls there.

Yuan Fangguo didn't have breakfast because he had already made an appointment with his second brother Yuan Fangtai.

At 8:30 in the morning, Yuan Fangguo finally met his second brother at the school gate.

What surprised him was that his second brother actually came riding a military sidecar.

Looking at his second brother with a heroic look on his face, Yuan Fangguo was stunned for several seconds before he recognized his second brother.

Dressed in a military green uniform, Yuan Fangguo seemed to have become more mature and sensible than before he joined the army.

His appearance undoubtedly attracted the attention of many people around him. The People's Liberation Army was still highly respected in that era.

"Brother, get in the car, I'll take you to eat dumplings." Yuan Fangtai patted the body of the motorcycle and said to Yuan Fangguo excitedly.

Yuan Fangguo grinned and then straddled the motorcycle.

"Boom!" Yuan Fangtai stepped on the accelerator and the sidecar flew out in an instant.

"Second brother, you are so cool." Yuan Fangguo couldn't help but praise.

"It's okay. We have to go out to deliver newspapers every three days. I'm a clerk in the company, so the company commander and the instructor let me out." On the street, Yuan Fangtai rode his motorcycle in a dashing manner, attracting a lot of attention.

After riding for more than ten minutes, Yuan Fangguo estimated that he had traveled at least ten miles, only to see his second brother casually park the sidecar in front of the post office.

"There's a dumpling shop over there that's delicious," Yuan Fangtai said. "I'll treat you today."

Yuan Fangguo smiled and followed his second brother towards the dumpling shop.

The two brothers hadn't seen each other for almost a year, and they talked a lot after meeting.

Yuan Fangtai briefly told his eldest brother about his situation in the army. It turned out that after he joined the army at the beginning of the year, he was selected by the company as a clerk because of his high level of education and good handwriting. When doing clerical work, he was also very serious and responsible. No matter whether it was the inspection organized by the regiment or the battalion, there was basically no problem. He was deeply loved by the company commander and the instructor. In addition, the original communicator was going to be demobilized at the end of the year, so the company also wanted Yuan Fangtai to be the communicator. Starting last month, he was responsible for picking up newspapers and letters every week.

After listening to his second brother's story, Yuan Fangguo couldn't help but patted his second brother on the shoulder and said, "You are a good kid. Work hard in the army and strive to be promoted."

Yuan Fangtai nodded and told Yuan Fangguo that as long as he worked hard, promotion should not be a big problem.

"Brother, how about you? It's been a week since you came here. How is it? Are you used to it?" Yuan Fangtai couldn't help but ask after taking a bite of dumplings.

Yuan Fangguo nodded and told his second brother about his school life.

"Life is tough at home, so I want to be self-reliant. I've made about 300 yuan this week, so I definitely have enough to live on. But I looked at our schedule, and it's basically 50/50 between study time and self-study time. I'm thinking of getting a part-time job to earn some money. Do you know where the biggest scrap recycling station is here?"

"Why are you going to the scrap collection station?" Yuan Fangtai asked curiously.

Yuan Fangguo told his second brother about his plan to open a rental bookstore.

"Don't you need a shop to rent a bookstore?" Yuan Fangtai frowned.

"All the shops are full now. It's hard to find a place to rent. I also found out that a shop only costs 5,000 yuan a year, which I can't afford at all. So I thought of opening a rental bookstore in our dormitory. I'll start by doing it and then see how it performs based on the benefits." Yuan Fangguo told his second brother about his plan.

"Go to the scrap collection station to buy books?" Yuan Fangtai frowned, as if he was thinking about something. After a while, he suddenly asked, "Brother, do you want those magazines?"

"Yes." Yuan Fangguo nodded without hesitation.

"That's easy. I noticed a lot of mess in our company's library. I was just about to sell it to a junk collector." Yuan Fangtai already knew how to smoke. He blew out a puff of smoke and said.

"Your leader won't say anything?" Yuan Fangguo was very surprised.

"No, they were all bought by the old soldiers. Everyone is tired of reading them." Yuan Fangtai said with a smile: "Story Club Zhiyin Ancient and Modern Legends, I estimate there are hundreds of them."

"Give them all to me." Yuan Fangguo said immediately.

Yuan Fangtai nodded and said, "Okay, I'll sort it out and bring it to you when I get out next Tuesday."

Yuan Fangguo had never expected this. His second brother actually had hundreds of magazines. Maybe he could start a business just by relying on these magazines.

But he still decided to go to the scrap collection station to have a look.

Yuan Fangtai had relatively free time when he went out. He could just go back before work in the afternoon. In addition, he did a good job in front of the company commander and the instructor, and gained their trust, making him a favorite in their eyes.

Yuan Fangtai asked Yuan Fangguo to take out the letter he wrote to his family. Yuan Fangguo was very surprised. He didn't know how his second brother could get a free ticket.

"You'll know in a moment." Yuan Fangtai smiled and took something out of his pocket.
