Extra 1
The first incarnation of Ji Yanjun
——
One morning in the 1980s, birds were chirping, leaves were rustling, and a slight chill filled the air.
Ji Yanjun opened the wooden door, squinting as he held a porcelain basin in his hand. Inside the basin were a white towel, a white porcelain jar, a tube of herbal toothpaste, and a toothbrush.
"Yanjun, get up!" the gatekeeper called out as he practiced Tai Chi in the courtyard.
"Hmm." Ji Yanjun walked towards the pond in the parking lot.
The gatekeeper asked with a smile, "What time did you get back last night?"
"Twelve o'clock, I guess." Ji Yanjun squeezed out some toothpaste, turned on the tap, filled it with water, and started brushing his teeth.
"Was it smooth?" the gatekeeper asked.
"smoothly."
"Didn't you encounter any tolls this time?" the gatekeeper asked again.
"I encountered it."
The gatekeeper immediately became serious: "So how was it resolved?"
After rinsing his mouth with water from the white porcelain mug, Ji Yanjun turned on the tap, wet a towel, and wiped his face. After pulling the towel off, he laughed and said, "What else can I do but get it over with!"
"Yanjun, you didn't get into another fight, did you?" The gatekeeper was quite startled.
Ji Yanjun took the towel and wiped his neck and arms, then threw the towel into the porcelain basin. He then rubbed the soap on the towel with the soap from the edge of the sink and washed it over. "No, I can't use it every time."
The gatekeeper breathed a sigh of relief: "That's right, that's right, we can't have to fight every time."
Ji Yanjun didn't say anything and continued rubbing the towel.
Just then, the deep, sharp sound of a truck horn rang out from outside the yard.
"It must be Gangzi coming back." The gatekeeper said, running up and saying, "I'll go open the gate and let them in."
As Ji Yanjun wrung out the towel and hung it on the line to dry, Gangzi parked the car and got out.
"Yanjun," Gangzi called out.
"How's it going? Is everything alright?" Ji Yanjun asked.
Gangzi laughed: "You've run that route to death, and if it's still not going well, how am I supposed to keep my job!"
"As long as everything goes smoothly," Ji Yanjun said.
Gangzi asked, "How about Uncle? When is he coming back?"
Ji Yanjun said, "Da Wu is with him. He won't be back tomorrow, but he'll definitely be back the day after tomorrow."
"Okay, I'm starving. Let's go eat together," Gangzi said.
“Go by yourself,” Ji Yanjun said.
"What's wrong?" Gangzi asked.
"I'll go find Qingqing in a bit."
"Oh my, he just got back, and he said he didn't have a girlfriend." Gangzi looked on with envy and jealousy.
"Yanjun!"
Before Ji Yanjun could even take a step to find Wen Qing, Wen Qing had already run into the courtyard. She had her hair tied in a ponytail, wearing a plaid shirt, cropped trousers, and leather shoes, looking stylish and radiant.
"Hey, Wen Qing, you too..." Gangzi was interrupted by Ji Yanjun's words: "Shut up."
"Okay, I'll shut up," Gangzi muttered under his breath.
Ji Yanjun approached Wen Qing and stared straight at her, making Wen Qing blush.
"Have you eaten?" Ji Yanjun asked.
"No."
"Let's go eat."
Wen Qing nodded.
"Gangzi, I'm leaving." Ji Yanjun said, wanting to put his arm around Wen Qing's shoulder, but thinking that it was broad daylight, he didn't do so, and just walked side by side with Wen Qing.
The two sat in the breakfast shop eating breakfast, one plate of steamed buns and one bowl of porridge each.
Wen Qing did all the talking, while Ji Yanjun listened. Ji Yanjun smiled as he looked at her. He remembered the first time he met her; she was just as energetic, immediately catching his eye and making him want to get closer to her. But she was more proactive than him, which surprised him greatly.
"When will Second Uncle be back?" Wen Qing asked.
"Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow." Ji Yanjun took a steamed bun and handed it to Wen Qing, who quickly said, "I can't eat anymore, I'm too full."
"Have another one," Ji Yanjun said.
Wen Qing: "No."
Ji Yanjun had no choice but to put it in his mouth and eat it himself.
"When are you going out next?" Wen Qing asked.
Ji Yanjun raised an eyebrow at her, noticing her wide-eyed expression, which he found exceptionally adorable, and couldn't help but smile: "In a couple of days."
"But I have class tomorrow."
"I'll stay with you today," Ji Yanjun said.
Wen Qing suddenly became happy: "Then let's go see a movie tonight."
Ji Yanjun nodded: "Okay."
After breakfast, Ji Yanjun took Wen Qing back to the parking compound and to his own small room.
Ji Yanjun took a nap.
Wen Qing sat at the table next to him doing her homework, asking Ji Yanjun intermittently, "Yanjun."
Ji Yanjun squinted in response.
“After your second uncle comes back, tell him to come to the school to see me. I haven’t seen him for a week and I miss him,” Wen Qing said.
"good."
After a while, Ji Yanjun spoke first: "Is your living allowance enough?"
Wen Qing quickly replied, "That's enough. My second uncle gave it to me before he left. It's enough for me to live on for a month."
“Is there anything you want to buy? I’ll buy it for you,” Ji Yanjun said.
Wen Qing: "No, I spend all my time in the dorm except for classes, so I don't spend much money."
"Um."
Wen Qing buried herself in her book and continued reading.
Ji Yanjun opened his eyes and looked at the roof beam. This small room had two small windows, one in the front and one in the back, both of which were now closed and covered tightly with newspaper, but light still shone in.
For example, at this moment, Ji Yanjun turned his head and saw the faint light shining on Wen Qing's profile. He could vaguely see the fine downy hairs on her face, which seemed to be surrounded by a halo, making her look exceptionally soft. Her slender neck was slightly bent into a beautiful arc.
"Qingqing," Ji Yanjun couldn't help but call out.
Wen Qing replied softly, "Mm."
"Come here for a moment."
"What's wrong?" Wen Qing got up, walked to the bedside, squatted down, and asked, "Why did you call me?"
Ji Yanjun stared straight at her. Her skin was tender, and her lips were red and full, as if inviting him to take a bite. He couldn't wait to go up and take a bite.
Wen Qing asked in confusion, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Ji Yanjun felt short of breath, and his lower abdomen and whole body felt like they were on fire.
"Ah, Yanjun, you're bleeding from your nose!" Wen Qing exclaimed.
"Don't scream." Ji Yanjun reached out and covered her mouth. The warmth of her lips made his whole body even hotter, and his nose started bleeding more. Ji Yanjun immediately let go of her, sat up instantly, put on his slippers and went out. He ran to the sink in one breath, turned on the tap and started rinsing himself with water.
"Yanjun".
"It's nothing." Ji Yanjun pulled the towel from the rope, wiped his nose, and made sure the bleeding had stopped. His face hardened. "Go do your homework. I'm going out for a walk."
"I'll be with you."
"No need," Ji Yanjun said expressionlessly, and then left.
Wen Qing was slightly angry. They were fine just now, but now they suddenly turned on each other. She was unhappy and went back to her room to do her homework. After a while, she saw Ji Yanjun return through the crack in the window. Just as she was about to speak, she realized that Ji Yanjun hadn't come back to this room at all, but had gone to Gangzi's room.
Ji Yanjun finally managed to cool down his desires and then felt sleepy. He couldn't stay in the same room as Wen Qing for the time being. What if he became a beast and hurt Wen Qing? Wen Qing was still young.
Thinking this, he lay down on Gangzi's bed. He had just closed his eyes when the door was pushed open.
"Why don't you go back to your own room to sleep?" Wen Qing asked.
"I was afraid of disturbing you while you were doing your homework," Ji Yanjun said, sitting up.
"You're lying."
"No."
"You definitely don't want to see me."
Ji Yanjun frowned, unsure how to explain.
When Wen Qing saw his expression, she immediately realized that her guess was correct, and her bad temper flared up: "Then I'm leaving."
"Qingqing..."
With a bang, Wen Qing slammed the door shut, and not only shut it, but also locked it from the outside.
"Qingqing," Ji Yanjun called from inside the room.
Wen Qing ran back to his room without a care, packed her schoolbag, and stormed off, leaving behind lunch, dinner, a movie, and the promise of being taken back to school—all gone.
"Qingqing!" Ji Yanjun called out. He knew Wen Qing had left when he heard the sound of the door being locked next door. He waited for a while, but when he could no longer hear Wen Qing's footsteps, he shouted loudly for the doorman.
The gatekeeper took a long time to rush over and ask, "Yanjun, what's wrong? Where's Qingqing?"
"He ran away in anger," Ji Yanjun said.
"Oh, then why don't you hurry up and chase after them?"
"I'll change my clothes first," Ji Yanjun said.
Just as Ji Yanjun finished speaking, Ji Ningzhi and Zhang Fangfang arrived.
"Brother," Ji Ningzhi called out.
Zhang Fangfang called out gently, "Yanjun."
Ji Yanjun immediately frowned: "What are you doing here?"
"I have class tomorrow, brother, can you take me and Sister Fangfang to school?" Ji Ningzhi said.
Ji Yanjun thought that he also needed to go to Nanzhou No. 1 Middle School to find Wen Qing later, so he said, "Okay, you guys wait a moment." Then, Ji Yanjun went back to his room to change his clothes. Before leaving, he found a pencil on the ground. He picked it up and chuckled to himself, thinking how forgetful he was.
"Let's go." Ji Yanjun first took Zhang Fangfang to the university.
Zhang Fangfang made an excuse, saying she wanted to have dinner with Ji Ningzhi, and then sat down at Nanzhou No. 1 Middle School again.
After parking the car, Ji Yanjun followed Ji Ningzhi into the school. When they arrived at the girls' dormitory, he said, "Go and call Wen Qing down."
Ji Ningzhi went to call Wen Qing in a low voice.
Wen Qing appeared reluctant, but inwardly she was quite willing to come. After greeting Zhang Fangfang, she lowered her head.
Zhang Fangfang gave an awkward smile, then looked at Ji Yanjun.
Ji Yanjun remained expressionless and asked Wen Qing, "Are you still angry?"
Wen Qing remained silent.
"Let's go eat," Ji Yanjun said.
Wen Qing stared at the ground and replied, "I'm not going."
Zhang Fangfang then looked at Ji Yanjun and saw that he had frowned. To show her gentleness, she quickly took Wen Qing's hand and persuaded, "Let's go, let's all go together."
"I'm not going, why are you dragging me away?" Wen Qing said unhappily, shaking off Zhang Fangfang.
Zhang Fangfang was thrown to the side and staggered a couple of steps.
"Wen Qing, you..." Ji Yanjun wanted to say something to Wen Qing, but couldn't bear to, so he turned to Zhang Fangfang and asked, "Fangfang, are you alright?"
"No." Zhang Fangfang shook her head, but she was secretly pleased. Now Ji Yanjun should be annoyed with Wen Qing.
"That's good, she's just throwing a tantrum," Ji Yanjun said.
Zhang Fangfang was taken aback.
"Are you going to eat?" Ji Yanjun asked again.
Wen Qing then said unhappily, "Fine, I'll go!"
Zhang Fangfang dragged Ji Ningzhi along, and the lunch was not pleasant. Ji Yanjun had a stern face, and Wen Qing also had a long face. Zhang Fangfang tried to sow discord, and Ji Ningzhi disliked Wen Qing.
"What movie do you want to watch?" Ji Yanjun asked after dinner.
"Whatever," Wen Qing said unhappily.
Ji Ningzhi rolled her eyes.
Zhang Fangfang gently mediated from the side.
"Get in the car," Ji Yanjun said.
Wen Qing got into the passenger seat, while Zhang Fangfang and Ji Ningzhi sat in the back. Without Zhang Fangfang's instigation, Ji Ningzhi did not have a conflict with Wen Qing.
When they arrived at the cinema, there were only afternoon screenings available, so Ji Yanjun bought four tickets. He gave one ticket to Zhang Fangfang and one to Ji Ningzhi, and held two tickets in his hand. With a stern face, he said to Wen Qing, "Let's go shopping first, and watch the movie in the evening."
"Annoying," Wen Qing muttered to herself as she walked forward.
Ji Yanjun's expression immediately turned ugly.
Zhang Fangfang was pleased to see this.
Once inside the movie theater, Zhang Fangfang realized that she and Ji Ningzhi were seated together, but far away from Ji Yanjun, about five or six rows away. The lighting in the theater was poor, and she noticed that both Wen Qing and Ji Yanjun, who were sitting together, looked unwell.
"Sister Fangfang, this movie is great, I've wanted to see it for a long time," Ji Ningzhi said.
Zhang Fangfang chuckled twice and chatted with Ji Ningzhi. She would occasionally look back at Ji Yanjun and Wen Qing, only to see that Ji Yanjun and Wen Qing were ignoring each other. In addition, a large fat man was sitting in front of them, blocking half of their figures.
Ji Yanjun deliberately chose a corner seat.
Wen Qing sat quietly.
When the movie started, Ji Yanjun spoke up: "Why are you so disobedient?"
Wen Qing remained silent.
Ji Yanjun sighed, took her hand and asked, "Are you still angry?"
"Mm." Wen Qing nodded.
"Why are you angry? Just because I slept in Gangzi's room?" Ji Yanjun asked.
"You just don't want to see me. You came back from your business trip, but you didn't even look for me." Wen Qing turned her head and accused him with a wronged expression.
Ji Yanjun laughed: "I got back at midnight last night, how could I find you?"
"Then why didn't you look for me this morning?"
"Now that you're here, how am I supposed to find you?"
"Then, how come you're sleeping in Gangzi's room?"
Ji Yanjun cleared his throat. Seeing that the surrounding light was dim and everyone was watching a movie with the volume extremely loud, he moved closer to Wen Qing, put his hands on Wen Qing's waist, and said, "You want to know?"
"Hmm." Wen Qing stared blankly at Ji Yanjun, who was very close to her, so close that she could clearly see his thick, curled eyelashes.
Ji Yanjun's Adam's apple bobbed, and he said in a low, captivating voice, "Because I wanted... you at that time."
Wen Qing didn't quite understand, but because his voice was so ambiguous, her heart tightened, and she asked, "What do you mean?"
"Don't you know?" Ji Yanjun moved even closer to her face, his nose almost touching hers. This was the first time they had been so close.
"No, no, I don't know," Wen Qing stammered.
“Back then, I wanted to kiss you, and I still do now.” Ji Yanjun tilted his head slightly and his lips touched hers.
Wen Qing was startled.
The moment Ji Yanjun touched her lips, he felt a tingling sensation all over his body. The soft, warm feeling made him unable to let go of her.
"Yanjun." Wen Qing gripped Ji Yanjun's clothes stiffly with both hands, calling out in a kitten-like voice.
Ji Yanjun put his arm around her and leaned against the wall so that no one would see them: "Relax."
"I...I can't breathe anymore." Wen Qing's whole body stiffened. She liked Ji Yanjun, but it was a pure liking, wanting to be with him. She never imagined it would be like this. In movies, a kiss on the cheek or a kiss on the lips is enough. She had kissed Ji Yanjun's lips before, but that was from the movies, without the biting or sucking steps.
"Don't be nervous." Ji Yanjun said in a hoarse voice, and as the kiss deepened, he couldn't help but cup Wen Qing's face in his hands and suck and bite it hard.
Suddenly, the sound of gunshots rang out in the movie theater, louder than before, causing Ji Yanjun to regain his senses and release her.
Both of them were panting heavily.
Zhang Fangfang, sitting in the front seat, craned her neck to look back, seemingly seeing Ji Yanjun and Wen Qing doing something, yet also seemingly not seeing anything at all.
"Sister Fangfang, what are you looking at?" Ji Ningzhi asked.
"Ah, it's nothing, it's nothing." Zhang Fangfang turned her head and thought to herself, were Ji Yanjun and Wen Qing kissing? Ji Yanjun shouldn't kiss Wen Qing, right? Probably not, Ji Yanjun isn't that kind of person. The two of them sitting together is probably because of the movie tickets.
His face was flushed red, and Ji Yanjun was in no better shape. He felt his face burning and his heart racing. After a while, he touched Wen Qing's hand again, held it in his palm, and asked, "Are you scared?"
Wen Qing lowered her head and remained silent.
Ji Yanjun laughed: "Still angry?"
"You're annoying."
Ji Yanjun chuckled softly, about to say something to Wen Qing, but Wen Qing said, "Let's watch a movie."
The movie ended quickly, and it was already dark when it ended. Ji Ningzhi kept saying she wanted to eat, so Ji Yanjun took the three of them out for dinner.
When I returned from dinner, it was already pitch black.
Ji Yanjun drove Zhang Fangfang back to school first, and then drove to Nanzhou No. 1 Middle School. As soon as Ji Ningzhi got out of the car, she ran away, not wanting to wait for Wen Qing at all.
As it grew dark, Ji Yanjun escorted Wen Qing to school.
“Walk with me around the playground for a while longer. There are a few students in the school whose partners were introduced by their families, and they all go for a walk on the playground after dark,” Wen Qing said.
Ji Yanjun asked, "You really want to?"
"Yes, I really want to, really want to go for a walk with you."
"good."
Taking advantage of the darkness, Ji Yanjun took Wen Qing's hand and walked towards the playground.
Wen Qing shook Ji Yanjun's arm with a big smile on her face.
"What are you shaking?" Ji Yanjun asked.
"I'm just shaking it for fun, it makes me happy," Wen Qing said.
"Keep shaking, I'm happy."
Wen Qing shook Ji Yanjun's hand as they walked around the playground under a sky full of stars. Ji Yanjun asked, "Qingqing, if I wanted to marry you, would you marry me?"
"Yes, I'm willing to marry you," Wen Qing said without hesitation.
Ji Yanjun pinched her chin: "Where's your modesty? Aren't you going to think it over?"
"No need to think about it, I'm willing to marry you."
Ji Yanjun felt as if honey had melted in his heart, and said sweetly, "Okay, I'll wait until you go to university."
"Now is also fine."
"Be more reserved," Ji Yanjun said, though he was secretly overjoyed.
Even after he dropped Wen Qing off at her dormitory and drove towards the county town, his heart was still bursting with joy, and the smile on his lips never faded.
In the past, I didn't feel anything when I saw my friends getting married and having kids at a young age.
Now, thinking about it, getting married and having kids early is actually quite good.
The author has something to say: Actually, Lao Ji and Qingqing had many sweet moments in their first life—when they first started dating, during their passionate love, and for a while after their marriage, etc.—but it was too painful later on. Therefore, the epilogue will only focus on the sweet moments, not the heartbreaking ones.
I'll write whatever I feel like for the extra chapters. You can check the synopsis; I'll mark it clearly. If you're not interested, please don't subscribe. Mwah, love you all.
