Extra 2
The Little Things About Love in Ji Yanjun's First Life
——
Ji Yanjun only stayed in the county town for one day. The next day, he took on a job that required him to travel back and forth to a neighboring city twice.
On the day he went to the neighboring city, he drove his truck on a detour to Nanzhou No. 1 Middle School to find Wen Qing.
Wen Qing ran out of the school, panting, and ran to a row of poplar trees. When she saw Ji Yanjun, she was overjoyed.
Ji Yanjun was smoking by the tree when he saw Wen Qing. He put out his cigarette and walked towards Wen Qing.
Wen Qing turned her head and saw the truck next to her. The smile on her face faded, and she asked, "Are you leaving again?"
Ji Yanjun smiled and said, "Yes."
Where to?
"A neighboring city."
When will you be back?
"Barring any unforeseen circumstances, I'll be back on Saturday," Ji Yanjun said.
Wen Qing was somewhat disappointed; it was neither in Nanzhou nor in the county town.
Seeing her resentful little face, Ji Yanjun laughed: "I'll be back on Friday."
Wen Qing was unhappy.
He looked around and, seeing no one on the road, leaned closer and said, "I'll be back on Friday to pick you up and take you back to the county town."
Wen Qing turned her head to one side.
Ji Yanjun walked around to face her. She looked up and glared at him fiercely, her expression incredibly vivid. Ji Yanjun asked softly, "Can't bear to part with me?"
"no."
"Then why are you glaring at me?"
"Gaze if you want."
Seeing her insincere expression, Ji Yanjun found it inexplicably cute and smiled. Just as he was about to tease her, the school bell rang.
"Class is starting," Ji Yanjun said.
Wen Qing lowered her head.
"Go back to class. I'll pick you up on Friday afternoon." Ji Yanjun patted Wen Qing's head.
Wen Qing nodded: "Be careful on the road."
"Um."
"Did you sleep well today? Are you still sleepy?"
"I slept well. I'm not sleepy anymore."
"Then let's go to class."
"Um."
Ji Yanjun watched Wen Qing run into the school until she disappeared from sight before getting into his car and driving to a neighboring city. He expected to return to Nanzhou on Friday afternoon and pick up Wen Qing on the way back to the county town. However, it rained, and he didn't arrive in Nanzhou until Saturday afternoon.
He figured Wen Qing must have gone back to the county town, so he drove straight to the county town parking lot.
In the parking lot, Uncle Wenqing and Dawu were loading goods, while Wenqing was helping to count them. When Ji Yanjun returned, Wenqing rolled his eyes.
Ji Yanjun touched his nose.
"Yanjun is back," Uncle said with a smile.
"Yes, you're back." Ji Yanjun glanced at Wen Qing, who turned her face away.
Ji Yanjun: "..."
"How did it go? Was it all right?" my second uncle asked.
"It's alright, it just rained." After saying that, Ji Yanjun asked, "How come the goods are here?"
Da Wu chimed in, "The owner brought the goods. He said his factory is in a remote area, and it's hard for large trucks to get in, so he used oxcarts. He brought them to our yard one after another, and that's when we started loading our goods."
Ji Yanjun looked at the goods that were almost packed and asked, "When are you leaving?"
"We'll leave right away," Da Wu said. "The place isn't far; we'll get there tonight."
"Then be careful tonight, it might rain again."
“Okay,” Da Wu said. “We won’t be coming back tonight. There are goods there too. We’ll pick them up first thing tomorrow morning and then transport them to another place.”
Ji Yanjun nodded: "Okay. Be sure to be careful."
"I understand," Da Wu said happily.
"Qingqing, your brother Dawu and I will be leaving soon. Go home by yourself, buy some food, and don't go hungry." Uncle Er instructed, "Buy whatever you want to eat, we don't skimp on money."
"I know, you're so long-winded!"
Instead of being angry, Uncle chuckled and patted Wen Qing's head, saying, "After Uncle finishes this trip, I'll buy you a new outfit."
"I don't want new clothes," Wen Qing said unhappily.
"Then buy the fabric. You can make whatever kind you like. Anyway, Qingqing is really capable."
"Are you still nagging?"
"Alright, alright, your second uncle won't say anymore. Your second uncle will be leaving now." The second uncle said with a smile, his eyes full of affection for Wen Qing.
After her second uncle got into the car, Wen Qing said, "Second Uncle, be careful on the road."
"Eh."
"Eat when you're hungry, sleep when you're sleepy, don't hold back."
"good."
Don't drink unboiled water.
"Alright, alright," Second Uncle said with a smile, "Little Qingqing, I've remembered everything."
With a rumble, the truck started up, and Ji Yanjun and Wen Qing made way for Da Wu and his second uncle, who then drove away. The parking yard immediately fell silent.
Wen Qing turned and walked to the sink, turning on the tap to wash her hands.
"Qingqing," Ji Yanjun called out.
Wen Qing ignored him.
It rained yesterday.
"I didn't know it was raining!" Wen Qing said stubbornly. She waited at school yesterday and at the four-way intersection this morning, but she still hadn't seen him.
"Isn't it raining here?" Ji Yanjun asked deliberately.
Wen Qing turned around, glared at him, and left.
Before she had taken two steps, Ji Yanjun stepped forward, grabbed her hand, and pulled her to the door of his room. He took out his key from his pocket, quickly opened the door, and pushed her inside.
"What are you doing?" Wen Qing shouted.
Ji Yanjun covered her mouth and laughed, "Why are you angry again?"
Ji Yanjun didn't cover his hand tightly, but Wen Qing opened her mouth and bit his hand hard, making him hiss. He quickly let go and immediately frowned, saying with a hint of anger, "Wen Qing!"
Hearing this shout, Wen Qing, who was already feeling wronged, suddenly exploded and turned to open the door and run away.
"Go on, and don't come back after you leave," Ji Yanjun said.
Wen Qing was taken aback and turned to look at Ji Yanjun.
Ji Yanjun looked displeased. He felt that Wen Qing had become angry for no reason and he couldn't coax her.
"Fine! If you don't want to come, then don't come! I don't want to come either! I'll never come again! Ji Yanjun! I'll never recognize you again!" When Wen Qing's temper flared up, she said whatever came to mind, and her eyes immediately turned red. Ji Yanjun's heart skipped a beat.
Wen Qing had already opened the door.
Ji Yanjun immediately stepped forward, put his arm around her waist, closed the door, bolted it, and then pulled her back into his arms.
Wen Qing struggled fiercely, kicking and scratching: "Ji Yanjun, you bastard, let me go!"
Ji Yanjun hugged her tightly: "Okay, stop being angry."
"Let me go."
Ji Yanjun held her firmly, sat on the bed, placed her on his lap, hugged her tightly, and asked, "Tell me, why did you suddenly get angry?"
Wen Qing tilted the general to one side.
Ji Yanjun reached out and pinched her chin, turning her around.
She leans to one side, and he straightens her back.
She leans to one side, he straightens her back.
So stubborn! Ji Yanjun got angry and leaned in to bite her chin, using a bit of force.
Wen Qing cried out in pain, and Ji Yanjun immediately released her.
Wen Qing glared at him fiercely.
Ji Yanjun asked, "Are you willing to look at me now?"
Wen Qing continued to stare at him.
Ji Yanjun put his arm around her and said, "It was raining, and the roads were difficult to travel, so we only got back now."
Wen Qing asked, "Isn't it because you don't like me?"
Who said I don't like you?
"Ning Zhi".
"What did she say?"
She said, "I'm always the one chasing after you, and you always have a dark look on your face when you see me. You like Fangfang, and you said you were dating Fangfang when you were in school."
“Nonsense!” Ji Yanjun said.
"I'm not talking nonsense. You smile when you see Fangfang, but you have a stern face when you see me. You even told me to leave just now, and not to come back."
"I was so angry because of you," Ji Yanjun said. "I was so angry that I couldn't speak coherently."
"So you actually like Fang Fang?"
"What do you mean by 'so'? Don't listen to Ning Zhi's nonsense. Fang Fang, Gang Zi, and I used to go to and from school together. What kind of relationship did we have? When I get home, I'll definitely teach Ning Zhi a lesson and tell her not to talk nonsense," Ji Yanjun said seriously.
Wen Qing scrutinized Ji Yanjun carefully and asked, "So, you don't like Fang Fang?"
"Um."
"You like me?"
"Um."
"real?"
"Um."
Wen Qing, who had just been feeling wronged, angry, and furious, now had a smile on her face. She always gets angry quickly, but she also calms down quickly: "Then tell me you like me."
"Qingqing, are you hungry?" Ji Yanjun asked.
"Tell me you like me."
"Let's cook dinner; the cafeteria doesn't serve food at night."
"Say you like me!"
What would you like to eat?
"I'm leaving if you don't tell me." Wen Qing tried to get up again, but Ji Yanjun grabbed her, pulled her into his arms, leaned down, and kissed her lips.
Wen Qing's heart tightened, and after a moment, she reached out and wrapped her arms around his neck, slowly following him.
Just then, a sudden downpour came from outside the window, with large raindrops hitting the roof tiles and making a pattering sound as they struck the roof beams.
“It’s raining.” Wen Qing pushed Ji Yanjun away, but still sat in his lap.
"Um."
"Second Uncle and Da Wu just left." Wen Qing turned to look at the newspaper-covered window.
"It's okay, the road they went on is easy to drive on."
"That's good."
"Hmm, are you hungry? Shall I cook today?" Ji Yanjun said with a smile, his arm around her waist.
"You need to smile at me more." Wen Qing involuntarily reached out and cupped Ji Yanjun's handsome face, saying, "Do you know how scary you are when you're not smiling?"
Ji Yanjun smiled and cupped her face in his hands, saying, "You should try to be less temperamental. Do you know how infuriating it is when you're angry?"
Wen Qing smiled and quickly kissed Ji Yanjun: "Then I'll be less temperamental."
Ji Yanjun kissed her back: "Then I'll smile more."
"Okay, let's cook."
"good."
Besides the canteen, there is also a small kitchen in the parking lot. The canteen serves breakfast and lunch. For dinner, the employees usually go home to eat. Ji Yanjun, Gangzi, the gatekeeper and a few others are permanent residents of the parking lot. They occasionally use the small kitchen when they are in the mood, but they rarely use it.
It was already dark. Because of the rain, the whole county was without power. The gatekeeper ate his lunch of steamed buns with kimchi and went to sleep.
Holding a kerosene lamp, Ji Yanjun found only a packet of noodles, a bunch of greens, a jar of pickled mustard greens, two eggs, and three coarse flour buns in the small kitchen.
"Noodles?" Ji Yanjun asked.
Wen Qing nodded: "Okay."
"You do it, I'll do it?"
Wen Qing chuckled: "You do it."
"Actually, all I can do now is make noodles."
"Then you do it, I'll hold the lamp for you." Wen Qing took the kerosene lamp.
Ji Yanjun was picking vegetables, washing vegetables, frying scallions, pouring water, cooking noodles, and beating eggs under the kerosene lamp, while Wen Qing was talking incessantly beside him, holding the kerosene lamp.
“I started following my second uncle as soon as I could walk, and he doted on me a lot,” Wen Qing said.
Ji Yanjun nodded: "I can tell."
"My second uncle's cooking is quite delicious. He's just really lazy, inexplicably so. I remember when I was little, if he didn't want to cook dinner, he would take me to the county town, have a bowl of tofu pudding and a fried dough stick, and then carry me back to Shuiwan Village."
Ji Yanjun laughed: "What did you look like when you were a child?"
"fat."
How fat?
"I was chubby, and my second uncle said I was really cute when I was little." Wen Qing said with a smile, "My second uncle said I wouldn't look good if I was thin, so he bought me lots of food when I was little."
Ji Yanjun turned his head and smiled, saying, "You're cute now too."
Wen Qing was stunned for a moment, then felt a sweet warmth in her heart and smiled.
"Alright, let's eat," Ji Yanjun said.
"Um."
In Ji Yanjun's small room, there was only a desk. On the desk were many of Wen Qing's miscellaneous things, such as books, strips of cloth, soap, pens, etc. Even his second uncle didn't know about them. Ji Yanjun usually kept the door tightly locked so that no one could see them.
At this moment, they realized that it was too much trouble to clear out the table for a meal, so Ji Yanjun pulled out a stool, and Wen Qing found two old newspapers to spread on it. The stool was then filled with white porcelain jars, bowls, canned food jars, and steamed buns.
The two sat on the small bed and ate.
"Is it good?" Ji Yanjun asked.
"tasty."
Eat more.
"Um."
After dinner, the rain was still falling, and it was getting heavier. Wen Qing stood at the door in a daze, wondering how to get home.
"Let's not go back," Ji Yanjun said.
Wen Qing was taken aback.
“You sleep on the bed, I’ll sleep on the floor,” Ji Yanjun said.
Wen Qing glanced at the distance between the bed and the floor, then at the heavy rain outside, and said to Ji Yanjun, "You can sleep in Gangzi's room."
Ji Yanjun: "..."
