"Hey, are you dead?"
Lin Xi struggled to open her eyes; she felt as if her head was about to explode, the pain unbearable.
As she was cursing under her breath, something suddenly hit her forehead, and warm liquid flowed down her cheek. When she looked down, she saw that it was blood.
She reached out to wipe it, but the more she wiped, the more it spread. She used all her strength to look around and saw a dark and fat little boy. When the little boy saw that she was awake, he grinned lewdly, rubbing his hands together, drool dripping from the corner of his mouth. His face looked exactly like that lewd male manager in the company.
"Are you out of your mind? If you're not dead, get up and get to work. You haven't finished cutting the pig feed for today."
The boy sniffled, and seeing that she didn't seem to be getting up, he bent down to pick up a stone, about to throw it again, when a girl next to him quickly pulled him back.
"Brother, don't throw it away. Look, she's bleeding. What if you accidentally kill her?"
Lin Xi then realized that it was this boy who had thrown the stone at her! Just as she was about to get up and teach the boy a lesson, she reached out and found that her hand had shrunk.
Looking down, I saw that his clothes were dirty, with large patches on top of small patches, and the kneecaps of his pants were worn so badly that the flesh underneath was exposed. His hands were covered in calluses, and there was black stuff under his fingernails.
What's going on?
Just then, a woman ran over. "Er Ya, what happened to you? Why are you bleeding so much?" As soon as the boy saw the woman coming, he ran away in a flash. The woman quickly covered Mi Xiaojing's head and hurriedly carried Mi Xiaojing home.
Just as I put Lin Xi on the bed, a voice grumbling and cursing came over.
"What are you doing? There's a ton of work to do in the fields, and the pigs at home are squealing with hunger. What are you two doing hiding inside the house?"
When Jiang's mother saw Old Lady Shen arrive, she quickly explained, "Mother, we didn't slack off. It was Er Ya's head that was broken by Jin Bao!"
On the way, she heard Da Ya say that it was Jin Bao who hit Er Ya with a stone. This Jin Bao was spoiled rotten by his mother. Last time, he put a snake in Er Ya's neck, which scared Er Ya so much that she had a high fever. Er Ya begged her mother for some money to treat her, but her mother refused no matter what. She even said that there was nothing to see in a little girl. It was better for her to die than for her to be a boy.
He had no other choice but to use a rag to wipe Er Ya's body repeatedly. He worked during the day and stayed by Er Ya's side all night to take care of her. That's how he managed to save her life. And now, after only a short time, Er Ya has collapsed on the ground again, her head covered in blood.
"Why would Jinbao throw something at her? My precious grandson is so well-behaved. Besides, even if Jinbao did throw it, it was because that brat Er Ya offended him."
After finishing her sentence, Grandma Shen went up to look at her and said, "Er Ya's eyes are still open, aren't they? Why are you making such a fuss? Go to the boiler and get some wood ash, put it on your head, and you'll be fine in two days. Don't do any work in the fields, just tidy up and go cook."
After saying that, she turned and left. Jiang's mother quickly chased after her and said, "Mother, look how much blood Er Ya has lost. Could you get her an egg to help her recover?"
"What supplements? You're just a freeloader, all you do is eat and never work. I'd save eggs for my grandson. Stop talking nonsense and get to work."
Jiang's mother had no choice but to go wash the rice and cook.
Inside the room, Lin Xi also realized that she had caught up with the trend and been reborn?
But please, even if it's a rebirth, at least become an empress or a princess, or at least play in the inner palace and engage in palace intrigue, that would be okay, right? What's with being a child of a few years old now!
Looking around the room, the windows were covered with a layer of tattered paper, and when the wind blew, it howled and blew in. There was a wooden box in the room with a large iron lock hanging on it, which looked like a dowry brought by Jiang's mother.
The bed I was lying on had two thin blankets on it, and next to it was a dilapidated cabinet with odds and ends scattered on it, which looked like they were dirt poor.
Since I'm already here, I might as well make the best of it. Complaining is useless. After all, I'm from the 21st century and have theoretical knowledge of modern society. I should be able to thrive here.
After resting in bed for a while, Er Ya (hereinafter referred to as Er Ya) felt her head wasn't hurting so much anymore. She lifted the blanket and slowly got out of bed.
Just as she reached the door, she saw Old Mrs. Shen sitting by the entrance to the main room, shelling corn. Jiang's mother was busy in the kitchen. Looking up and seeing Er Ya come out, she quickly came out and asked her:
"Why did you come out? Why didn't you stay inside and lie down a little longer? Are you hungry? Mom will have dinner ready soon."
Before Er Ya could answer, Old Lady Shen threw a corncob at her.
"What are you lying down for? Does she think she's some rich young lady? She pushes all the housework onto this old woman like me. The pigs in the sty haven't been fed yet. Hurry up and go feed them."
Er Ya carried a basin of pig feed to the pigpen and was about to feed the pigs when Da Ya, who was washing clothes, timidly came over and asked, "Er Ya, is your head feeling any better? I'm sorry, I didn't mean to not help you, but you know my brother, when he gets ruthless, he can even beat me up."
Er Ya looked up and saw that Old Lady Shen's eyes were glancing in their direction. She smiled at Daya, said nothing, and turned to feed the pigs.
With a bang, the courtyard gate was pushed open, and a man in his fifties walked in carrying a hoe, followed by his two sons and eldest daughter-in-law, Niu Shi. When Old Lady Shen saw that the people who had been working had returned, she urged Jiang Shi to quickly set out the food.
Er Ya, who hadn't even had a sip of water since she became conscious, bled excessively and then fed the pigs. Thinking that she could finally eat, her stomach acid was screaming so loudly that it was almost digesting her stomach lining.
The men sat at one table, and the women and children at another. On the men's table were steamed cornbread made from a mixture of cornmeal and wheat flour, a plate of stir-fried cabbage and meat, a plate of pickled vegetables, and a large bowl of porridge made from cornmeal.
The woman's table was mostly the same, except for the cabbage stir-fried with pork, which only had three or four pieces of meat scattered around.
Grandma Shen divided the porridge into portions: two cornbread buns for each adult and half a bun for each child. This was only because it was the busy farming season and people needed plenty of energy, so the amount of food was increased. Normally, they would only eat half the amount.
Of course, as the only male grandson in the family, Lin Jinbao receives the same treatment as the adults.
At Grandma Shen's command, everyone's chopsticks went straight to the meat. There was no other way; it was a year of famine, and people were having a hard time filling their stomachs. It was rare to see meat all year round, so when they finally got a taste of meat, they had to eat it quickly.
Seeing that something was wrong, Grandma Shen quickly picked up two slices of meat with her chopsticks and put them into Lin Jinbao's bowl. Niu Shi hurriedly picked up a slice and put it in her own mouth. Jiang's mother saw that there was still a little bit of meat in the bowl and was about to give it to Er Ya when Jinbao said to Grandma Shen, "Grandma, the meat is so delicious and fragrant. I want to eat more."
