Bai Jiaojiao knew that she was truly no longer capable.
Her dreams were becoming more and more real.
I've heard that on one's deathbed, past events will replay in one's mind like a revolving lantern.
She saw Shen Heng again.
Bai Jiaojiao felt as if she had returned to their wedding day.
Inside the dilapidated thatched hut, the character "囍" (double happiness) was illuminated by the kerosene lamp, casting a bright red glow throughout the room. On the table were half a plate of red dates and half a plate of peanuts, and the bedding on the bed was all new.
Chen Heng's strong forearms supported him on either side, his muscles taut, the dim light of the oil lamp softening his resolute face.
Unlike when she was younger, Bai Jiaojiao didn't pull out the scissors she had hidden under her pillow and hold them to her neck. Instead, she reached out and hugged him, holding his strong arms.
Chen Heng's deep eyes darkened further as he pinched Bai Jiaojiao's chin: "Look carefully, who am I?"
Shen Heng's tone wasn't exactly gentle; he always maintained this unapproachable demeanor.
His eyes were still gleaming with the light of the oil lamp, and Bai Jiaojiao stared at them blankly.
"Heng-ge, give it to me."
Bai Jiaojiao gripped Shen Heng's shoulders even tighter, seemingly trying to push the person supporting her down.
Hearing Bai Jiaojiao call his name, Shen Heng could no longer suppress the restlessness in his body and gladly accepted Bai Jiaojiao's invitation, leaning down.
Bai Jiaojiao thought Chen Heng would be fierce on the kang (heated brick bed), after all, he was quite tall and not known for his gentle nature; in fact, he had a notorious reputation.
However, Shen Heng was extremely careful in his movements. Bai Jiaojiao saw that Shen Heng's head was covered in sweat, but he was hesitant and afraid of hurting her.
Shen Heng, with his restraint yet greed, possessed everything Bai Jiaojiao had. After a night of ups and downs, Bai Jiaojiao held Shen Heng's hand, smiling through her tears.
That's fine, let her die in this dream.
Don't let her suffer from illness anymore, don't leave her alone in this world anymore.
If she could do it all over again, she would definitely hold Shen Heng's hand tightly when they first met, instead of waiting until the end to realize her own feelings and regret it too late.
.
"Drip-drop drip-drop—"
The village's wired broadcast system played a loud, harsh melody, a signal to wake everyone up for work.
Bai Jiaojiao was woken up and reflexively sat up in bed.
"Hiss!" The aches and pains all over her body made her gasp.
Her brows furrowed as she saw the large red "double happiness" character prominently displayed on the mud wall in front of her, and the memories of last night instantly returned.
Bai Jiaojiao focused her gaze and saw clearly that the thin, low-quality calendar on the wall clearly stated June 7, 1976.
It was the second year after her adoptive parents sent her back to Shili Village, and the first day she married Shen Heng.
She was reborn?
Reborn in Shili Village, before anything happened, she did not return to the city to find her adoptive parents, nor did she lose Shen Heng!
Bai Jiaojiao gripped the bedsheets tightly with both hands. Although she was overjoyed, she couldn't help but burst into tears, sobbing so hard that her whole body was trembling.
Two years ago, Bai Jiaojiao was called Ding Jiaojiao. Then one day, a girl with features almost identical to Ding's mother came to the door and said that she was the real daughter of the Ding family.
When the parents she had called "Mom" and "Dad" for over a decade were replaced by someone else's, Bai Jiaojiao's first reaction was anger.
She was like a fighting cock, making things difficult for Ding Shifang at every turn, but Ding Shifang was like a little white flower swaying in the wind, someone who would feel sorry for her, let alone her parents who felt deeply guilty towards her.
Bai Jiaojiao finally angered her adoptive parents and was sent back to Shili Village.
In order to return to the city, Bai Jiaojiao did not hesitate to associate with the educated youth in the village, ruining her reputation.
After marrying Shen Heng, even though Shen Heng doted on her, provided her with food and clothing, and supported her education, she was blinded by her obsession with returning to the city. She resolutely divorced Shen Heng, unaware that the days after returning to the city would be the real abyss.
Ding Shifang was not as weak and easily bullied as she appeared. She secretly ruined her reputation at the university and left her with nowhere to go after graduation, wandering the streets of the city.
In her past life, Shen Heng achieved great success and came to ask her to remarry him, but she hesitated to agree because of her inferiority complex. When she finally stood at the same height as Shen Heng, they were separated by death.
"Brother Heng, Brother Heng..."
The scene of Shen Heng's death seemed vivid in her mind, and Bai Jiaojiao murmured Shen Heng's name.
She didn't say what she wanted to say in her past life, but in this life she wants to show Shen Heng through her actions that she loves him too, loves him very much.
When Shen Heng pushed the door open, what he saw was Bai Jiaojiao curled up on the kang (a heated brick bed), hugging her legs and crying with tears streaming down her face.
His brows furrowed slightly, and a bitter feeling welled up inside him.
His tone, however, was unfriendly: "You've already come with me, what's the use of regretting it now?"
Shen Heng knew that he was able to marry Bai Jiaojiao entirely because he took advantage of her vulnerability.
Bai Jiaojiao fell into the water, and he rescued her. However, the villagers saw the two of them embracing each other while soaking wet. Under pressure from gossip, the Bai family finally married Bai Jiaojiao off to him.
Shen Heng knew about the pair of scissors Bai Jiaojiao kept under her pillow.
For some reason, Bai Jiaojiao suddenly became obedient last night. Shen Heng's mind was in turmoil this morning, and he was restless, longing for Bai Jiaojiao to be willing to live with him.
But now, looking at Bai Jiaojiao sobbing on his knees, Shen Heng felt as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over his head.
Upon hearing this, Bai Jiaojiao trembled slightly. She turned around and saw Shen Heng standing at the door, holding an enamel basin and staring at her.
Shen Heng was tall and blocked the door completely; because he was backlit, he looked particularly unreal.
