Chapter 220 Notification

If it weren't for Bai Shibo's current sickly appearance, Bai Shihai would have really wanted to slap him.

“Our dad fainted at home because of you. You should come with us to the hospital for a check-up right away. If everything is alright, call back to the village immediately to let them know you're safe!”

"Dad fainted?" Bai Shibao asked anxiously. "Is Dad alright now?"

"How can everything be alright? Your unit called our brigade, and the brigade commander came over and told us to be mentally prepared. He was almost saying that he was going to send the martyr's belongings in a couple of days."

Bai Shihai still gets dizzy thinking about it now.

"Big brother, I'm fine. Let me call Dad first."

Bai Shibao had no idea that his father was so psychologically fragile.

Bai Jiaojiao quickly said, "It's alright, Third Brother. He called back this morning to let us know you're awake, so Father will be relieved."

"I'd better call Dad myself."

Bai Shihai frowned as he looked at the anxious Bai Shibao: "Eat something first, then go to the hospital to get checked out."

Bai Shibao then realized he was starving: "What should I eat?"

The troops were making a rumbling retreat outside, and they stood out conspicuously at their encampment. Everyone else had almost completely withdrawn, so where were they going to find something to eat?

Shen Heng patted his chest and said, "Eat this to tide you over. We can eat something else once we get into the city."

Bai Shibao looked at the meat floss cake and said, "I haven't seen this for a long time."

He didn't mind the dryness; he ate two at a time, and only after filling his stomach did he have some energy left.

A man came in from outside: "Comrade Bai Shibao, once you've rested enough, we'll head to the hospital. Your regimental commander, Wang, asked me to stay and see you off."

They came to provide assistance, but most of these vehicles belonged to the local military region. The driver and Bai Shibao were not from the same unit, but they were good comrades-in-arms.

He heard that Bai Shibao was buried in the snow while saving a fellow villager, and he admired him greatly: "You're really amazing. We've never heard of anyone surviving an avalanche for so long. Wow, good deeds really do come to those who do good."

This person speaks with a strong Northeastern accent, so it seems he's from the same hometown.

"Thank you for your help, comrade. We can leave now."

After everyone put on their clothes, Bai Shihai and Shen Heng helped Bai Shibao into the car.

On the way, the driver looked at Bai Shibao's condition and said, "You're fine, don't worry. As long as you can feel your arms and legs, you're okay."

Bai Shibao nodded: "I also think they're all minor matters."

"Your siblings have such a good relationship, they came to find you so quickly."

Bai Shibao scratched his head and gave a happy yet embarrassed smile: "I always make them worry about me, but if they hadn't come looking for me this time, I might really have been buried there."

Bai Shihai slapped his leg: "Don't talk nonsense."

Bai Shibao immediately shut up obediently.

The four-wheeled trucks were fast; they arrived in the city in just one hour. It was quite lively there. In front of the supply and marketing cooperative, a large truck was loaded with cabbages, and a crowd of people were vying to buy them.

"Comrade, are you a local?"

Bai Shibao leaned closer to the front row and asked.

"My hometown isn't around here, but it's close. What's up?"

The driver glanced at Bai Shibao's face in the rearview mirror.

"Does your supply and marketing cooperative sell wild ginseng? Is it easy to get this stuff?"

Bai Shibao was still thinking about buying ginseng.

He still had several months' worth of allowance left, so he asked his older brother to lend him the money first, and he would pay him back when he got back.

"You'll have to buy this from a fellow villager, but they might not sell it to you because you're a stranger. The supply and marketing cooperative... they have radishes there."

Bai Shibao was scolded and then pulled back by Bai Shihai: "Alright, your safety is more effective than your father eating ten ginseng roots. Don't think about these things. After we finish our check-up at the hospital, we'll take a boat home right away. Don't waste their time."

The driver immediately said, "I'm fine. I'll just treat this as a day off. You've come all the way to the city. If you're healthy enough, you can do some sightseeing. Besides wild ginseng, we have other local specialties here."

"Yeah?!"

Bai Shibao, the person involved, didn't take his health seriously at all.

Bai Shihai said to Bai Jiaojiao, "We're worrying for nothing. We should have gone back with his troops and let him buy his wild ginseng here."

Bai Shibao scratched his head: "Big brother..."

When they arrived at the hospital, the Bai family was willing to pay for a comprehensive check-up for Bai Shibao, regardless of whether the military would cover it or not. There was nothing wrong with him, but he should be careful not to overwork himself and just rest well.

Now everyone was relieved. They found a state-run restaurant and treated the driver to a meal.

The driver became even more enthusiastic, taking them around the city for half a day and buying them a lot of local delicacies at the supply and marketing cooperative before finally dropping them off at the dock.

“This isn’t the area around my hometown, otherwise I would have definitely made you a couple of ginseng roots.”

The driver was reluctant to part with them when he saw them off.

"It's alright, we've already met, there will be other opportunities next time!"

Bai Shibao has already exchanged unit numbers and names with them, and they can continue to communicate by letter in the future.

Only after boarding the ship did Bai Shihai feel a sense of relief.

As the eldest brother, it seems that he was destined to worry about his younger siblings from birth. If anything happened to any of them, it would be like cutting off his arm.

"It's so nice to be in this deep forest. Brother, look at these mushrooms, what was he supposed to call them again?"
