Bai Shihai patted Bai Shiqing to comfort her.
Zheng Xu said to Bai Jiaojiao and Shen Heng, "You two need to keep your household registration booklets and admission notices safe. Shen Heng, be careful on your journey and don't lose anything important."
"Do you need to tell me this?" Shen Heng placed his crossbody bag in front of him, protecting it tightly. With his size, unless someone wanted to die, no one would dare to covet his things.
Zheng Xu was immune to Shen Heng's tone. He took it as Shen Heng's response: "You two have really brought honor to the village and the brigade this time. Go to Yanda University and study hard. I don't ask you to give back to the village. I just hope that you can become talents and pillars of the country and contribute to the country!"
Bai Jiaojiao immediately said, "Captain, we will definitely study hard! The country has given us the opportunity to continue our university studies, and we will never let everyone down!"
Zheng Xu patted Bai Jiaojiao on the shoulder: "I wish you a bright future. You deserve this. Because of you, everyone in our village has had a much better year. It will definitely be even more prosperous in the future. I believe that no matter where you are or what you do in the future, you will definitely achieve great things."
Looking at Bai Jiaojiao, Zheng Xu felt as if his own child had left and would never come back.
The train arrived, and Bai Jiaojiao and Shen Heng boarded it, while Zheng Xu and the other two were still watching them from outside.
The train was about to depart with a "whoosh," and Bai Jiaojiao looked at the three people waving at her outside, and tears welled up in her eyes.
For some reason, she remembered the time she left Shili Village in her previous life.
The platform was packed with people at that time, but it was empty to her.
She felt guilty towards Shili Village, but also full of expectations for Yancheng.
In her past life, she joyfully embraced the unpredictable, dark future; now, she bids farewell with tears in her eyes to the past that she has turned around.
Bai Jiaojiao grabbed Shen Heng's hand, and Shen Heng assumed that she was emotional because she was about to leave, so he reached out and grabbed her hand in return.
"Are you two married? You seem to have a really good relationship."
The woman in the lower bunk opposite me also boarded at this station. She was in her forties or fifties and looked quite well-off. The cloth bag on her lap probably contained a bag of sunflower seeds.
She handed one to Bai Jiaojiao: "Here, take it. The little girl is really pretty."
Bai Jiaojiao reached out and caught the sunflower seeds with both hands: "Thank you, Auntie."
"Judging from your accent, you don't sound like a local. Did you marry into our family? Are you visiting your parents' home?"
This woman was very talkative. Unlike those who love to pry into people's privacy, she was different because they would keep asking questions before even answering one.
"Where are you getting off? Ugh, I've been on this train all the way to Yancheng, six hours straight, it'll be dark by the time I arrive! It's so bumpy, my back hurt when I was younger, I really can't take it..."
Bai Jiaojiao managed to interject when she had a chance: "We're also going to Yancheng."
"That's great, we can chat together and the time will pass faster."
Shen Heng frowned: "Can't she tell me what she has to say?"
The older woman probably thought Bai Jiaojiao looked kind, and she wasn't afraid of Shen Heng's fierce expression. She even said, "You men don't know how to talk, what's the point of talking to you?" She then turned to Bai Jiaojiao and said, "Your husband is especially irritating to talk to, yet you two have such a good relationship. You must be easy to talk to."
Shen Heng pursed his lips into a straight line.
She insulted me.
But she praised my wife.
Bai Jiaojiao said, embarrassed: "He's not very good at talking, but he has a good heart."
"What are you saying? If he wasn't a good person, who would marry him? I've been through this before. I think you've found the right man. It doesn't matter if he's good with words or not. As long as he's capable and can earn money for the family, he's a good man..."
That auntie didn't act like an outsider at all, and immediately gave Shen Heng a long critique.
Shen Heng had never felt so helpless.
Bai Jiaojiao was cracking sunflower seeds on the side, secretly laughing to death.
This was the first time Shen Heng had managed to choke someone to death.
The auntie had been talking so much that her saliva was dry, and she finished the last gulp of water from the enamel mug in her hand: "I'm going to get some water. You two keep an eye on my bag, okay?"
Only then did they get a moment of peace.
"Are you tired? Do you want to go upstairs and take a nap?" Shen Heng breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that this person was finally gone.
Bai Jiaojiao laughed and said, "I'm going upstairs to sleep. When that aunt comes back, you can chat with her yourself."
"You're really patient, talking to her for so long. If we weren't in the car, I would have walked away already."
If it weren't for the fact that this auntie told Bai Jiaojiao that men like him were reliable, Shen Heng would have shut her up long ago.
"I think this auntie is quite interesting."
Bai Jiaojiao had no intention of resting. She rummaged through her bag and took out meat floss cakes and glutinous rice strips, waiting for the aunt to come back so they could eat together.
She waited and waited, but no one came back.
"Why does it take so long to go fetch water?"
It took too long, and Bai Jiaojiao couldn't help but ask.
The people on the train now are a mixed bag; many of them boarded illegally, and they don't even have identification. There might even be some desperate criminals on this train.
Bai Jiaojiao wasn't worrying unnecessarily. She said calmly, "Maybe she went to the restroom. If she doesn't come back later, we can tell the flight attendant when they come over. She might have gone to evade the fare."
No matter what happens, Shen Heng will never leave Bai Jiaojiao's side.
Bai Jiaojiao hugged her legs and leaned against Shen Heng, nodding in agreement.
