Chen Bingrui panicked. Chen Meizhen originally wanted to stay at home and listen, but when she heard this, she quickly ran out to explain, only to see Ji Guizhang leaving and going down the stairs.
"Teacher Ji, please let me explain!"
Chen Meizhen, not even properly dressed, was in a hurry to chase after him, but Chen Bingrui stopped her:
"Alright, aren't you embarrassed enough already!"
"Dad, Teacher Ji just said she's going to expel me! What will I do if I get expelled? Will I ever be able to hold my head up in front of others again?!"
Chen Meizhen screamed desperately, both anxious and angry.
Chen Bingrui ignored her emotions: "Who can you blame? Go home and stop embarrassing yourself here!"
Although it's a workday and usually all the teachers in this building are working, there might be some people at home right now. If Chen Meizhen continues to make a scene here, he'll never be able to hold his head up again.
Chen Meizhen rushed into the house and cried. Chen Bingrui's face was burning, and he felt like he had been slapped hard several times.
Ji Guizhang didn't like him much to begin with, so how could he continue to stay in Ji Guizhang's group after this incident?
Ji Guizhang came out of Chen Bingrui's house, sweating profusely with anger. He turned around and went to the dean's office.
"Dean, I have something to report to you!"
The dean of the medical school knew that Ji Guizhang's face was always as stiff as a block of wood, unmoved by anything. Now, he looked annoyed, and his voice carried a suppressed anger, as if he had restrained himself in front of him.
Having lived to such an old age and seen so much, the dean asked unhurriedly, "Tell me slowly."
The sky can't just fall down.
Ji Guizhang told the dean about Chen Meizhen's desertion at the last minute today, and said, "Dean, our Yanda University has a great reputation and is a benchmark for talent cultivation. If we condone such a student, it would be a disgrace to our school's reputation!"
For Ji Guizhang, it was simple: deserters should be shot. This wasn't a battlefield, so students like Chen Meizhen didn't deserve to stay in school.
After listening, the dean pondered for a while and said, "Since our school takes it as its responsibility to cultivate talents, when we encounter students like this, we should focus on guiding and nurturing them, and not give up on them just because they have made mistakes."
"Dean!"
"How about this, you decide on a punishment for her. Expelling her would be too severe. If we expel students for every mistake, what's the point of having us teachers?"
This dean had been demoted for many years and, putting himself in others' shoes, did not want to punish others too harshly, as overcorrection would be inappropriate.
Since the dean had said so, Ji Guizhang had no choice but to comply: "Then let her stay at the school for observation for the time being."
"Alright, alright," the dean flattered Ji Guizhang again. "Guizhang, I know you come from the military and are very disciplined, but the country is in dire need of these young people right now. As seniors, we should take on more responsibility and guide them onto the right path."
Ji Guizhang has his own principles, but living in society, there are some things he can't stand but has to back down from: "I understand, Dean. I have other things to do, so I'll go now."
The dean watched his retreating figure and shook his head.
Ji Guizhang was furious, and Bai Jiaojiao was almost driven mad by Chen Meizhen at the meeting.
She glanced at Chen Meizhen's translation materials and knew that many of them were wrong without needing to verify them with the book. She dared not trust them anymore and had no choice but to translate them herself without the manuscript.
Professor Peng, who was in charge of the conference, deliberately sat next to Bai Jiaojiao when the foreign lecturers were giving their presentations, thinking that if there were any inaccuracies in the translation, he would quickly write them down and correct them for Bai Jiaojiao.
However, Bai Jiaojiao's reaction surprised him. She was able to translate some of the professional terms that Professor Peng thought Bai Jiaojiao wouldn't understand. Even though some parts were not very accurate, it didn't hinder her listening to the lecture and was not a big deal.
The meeting ended relatively smoothly, and Bai Jiaojiao then realized that she was covered in a cold sweat.
Professor Peng was very satisfied and patted her on the shoulder, saying, "Bai Jiaojiao, right? You said you didn't do your homework beforehand, but how come you can translate some of the words so clearly?"
"Actually, those terms are already in our second-year textbooks. It's just that I only heard about some of the principles behind the cutting-edge research today. I guessed the meaning of some of them from the word roots. I only dared to continue after seeing your eyes."
Bai Jiaojiao thought to herself that she had really been tricked by Chen Meizhen this time.
"From what you're saying, you're also from our department? Your foreign language skills are no worse than those students sent from other departments. No, they're better! Which class are you in? Since you're so interested in surgery, would you like to come and visit our lab?"
Ji Guizhang had just arrived when he heard Professor Peng's words.
He thought to himself, "Speed is of the essence in war. Luckily, I acted early."
"Thank you, Professor Peng. I am now studying in Professor Ji's lab."
"Ah? Oh..." Professor Peng also remembered that he had just brought this person over from the cancer pathology department.
Ji Guizhang walked up to the two men and asked, "How did the meeting go?"
"A complete success. Dean Ji, you really have a keen eye for talent, able to recruit such promising individuals into the lab so early!"
Bai Jiaojiao, who was listening from the side, felt embarrassed.
Ji Guizhang's anger vanished: "Gold shines, and people will definitely see it."
Hearing Ji Guizhang's praise, Bai Jiaojiao was overjoyed.
"Hey, you're just showing off. With this classmate, your group will save so much trouble. Sigh, looks like I need to start looking for potential talents in advance, so we don't get snatched up by others. The students we recruited in previous years had really poor foundations."
Professor Peng hadn't seen such an outstanding student as Bai Jiaojiao in a long time, and now she was already someone else's.
Ji Guizhang wasn't good at small talk and was in a hurry to leave, so he said directly, "Teacher Peng, we have something to do, so we'll be going now. Bai Jiaojiao, come with me."
Bai Jiaojiao said goodbye to Professor Peng and followed Ji Guizhang back to his office.
On the way, Ji Guizhang told Bai Jiaojiao about Chen Meizhen faking illness. When they arrived at the office, Bai Jiaojiao placed the copy of Chen Meizhen's translation that she had been carrying on Ji Guizhang's desk: "Teacher, she really wasn't prepared. If I hadn't covered this in class, and we had followed her translation, this meeting would have been ruined."
Ji Guizhang could easily see the numerous errors throughout the book by simply flipping through it.
Ji Guizhang pointed forcefully at Chen Meizhen's file with two fingers: "I've already reported this to the dean, but the dean said we can't expel her directly. But even if she's put on probation, she won't stay for long! She'll cause trouble sooner or later!"
Bai Jiaojiao thought for a moment and then said, "Teacher Ji, Chen Meizhen is currently our class monitor. Since she has received this punishment, she shouldn't be able to continue serving as the monitor, right?"
