Chapter 178 Wrong Guess

"There's only one thing I want to know right now: did you call Xiao Lin the day he came home so late?" Wang Shen stopped beating around the bush and asked directly.

"Yes, he cheated on me, can't I even ask him a question?" The woman still looked indignant when she recalled the incident.

After listening to the woman's words, Wang Shen continued to press, "How did you know that Xiao Lin was cheating on you?"

“Of course someone told me,” the woman said after taking a sip of tea.

"Who told you that?"

"That's that damn guy's boss."

After hearing the woman's words, Wang Shen and Liang Zichen exchanged a glance, their faces showing barely concealed surprise. Wang Shen continued to press, "Xiao Lin's boss, you mean Han Mo?"

“Of course.” The woman glanced at Wang Shen. “I was also a little suspicious of that jerk. At first, I thought that the person he was cheating on me with was Han Mo. I didn’t expect that I was wrong.”

How did Han Mo notify you?

"The phone."

"Around when?"

After hearing Wang Shen's question, the woman thought for a moment and then slowly said, "I don't remember very clearly, but it wasn't very late. I remember it was just getting dark."

After the woman finished speaking, Wang Shen pondered for a moment. Han Mo's accident happened on June 18th, which was nearing summer, when the days are long and the nights short. According to the daylight hours in the south, sunset is around 6:30 PM. Therefore, the phone call must have been made around 7 PM.

After thinking for a while, Wang Shen came to her senses and called in the two police officers at the door. "My colleague will relay the information about your husband."

After giving a few words of instruction to the two police officers, Wang Shen turned and left the reception room with Liang Zichen. Wang Shen first returned to his office, then went to the water dispenser and poured Liang Zichen a glass of water.

After taking the water from Wang Shen, Liang Zichen said, "Captain Wang, it seems we were all wrong."

Wang Shen sat down in his chair, rubbed his temples, and nodded.

“But this doesn’t make logical sense. There’s a huge overlap between the time Han Mo made the phone call and the time she appeared in her room. How can this be explained?” Liang Zichen held the paper cup in his hand, his brows furrowing with increasing confusion.

Wang Shen shook his head and said, "To be honest, I've never encountered such a tricky case before. It can only be said that the murderer's intelligence surpasses that of ordinary people. But anything done by a human will inevitably have flaws." At this point, Wang Shen fell silent, because he had no idea where those flaws lay.

Seeing Wang Shen's solemn expression, Liang Zichen smiled and said in a relaxed tone, "Anyway, the current case is considered closed. As for Han Mo's case, we can investigate it slowly; there's no rush. Captain Wang, I'll treat you to a couple of drinks today."

Wang Shen nodded and stood up from his chair. Before he could even leave the office, a police officer rushed to the door, saluted Wang Shen, and said, "Captain Wang, the old lady's statement has been taken. Should we release her or detain her?"

Wang Shen waved his hand and said, "Let her go. She didn't commit a crime. By the way, take her to find her grandson and let them leave together."

The police officer nodded and left Wang Shen's office. Wang Shen locked the office door, and as he walked to the police station square, he happened to run into Dean Fu Ju and the little boy. By this time, the little boy had woken up, a smile he couldn't hide on his face.

It was the little boy who first noticed Wang Shen. He let go of Dean Fu Ju's hand and stumbled over to Wang Shen. The little boy rubbed his big, watery eyes and looked at Wang Shen, saying, "Uncle Wang, thank you."

A smile finally appeared on Wang Shen's face. He squatted down, patted the little boy's head, and said, "What are you thanking me for?"

"Thank you, Uncle, for helping me find my grandma," the little boy replied with a smile.

"You're welcome, it's what I should do. How about I take you out for cake again sometime?" Wang Shen said with a smile, making a promise to the little boy.

“Okay,” the little boy said, extending his little finger.

Wang Shen smiled, then extended his little finger and made a pinky promise with him. At this moment, Dean Fu Ju also walked to Wang Shen's side. Besides her exhaustion and sadness, Dean Fu Ju's face seemed to also show a hint of guilt.

"Officer Wang, thank you so much. If it weren't for you..."

Before Dean Fu Ju could finish speaking, Wang Shen interrupted her. "I didn't do anything. Just live a good life with your little grandson from now on. If you have any difficulties in life, you can come to me anytime."

After speaking, Dean Fu Ju nodded gratefully, then took the little boy's hand and prepared to leave. The little boy seemed to like Wang Shen very much as well, and kept turning back to wave to Wang Shen as they walked towards the police station entrance.

"The world of children is wonderful; they can forget even the greatest sorrows and be moved by even the smallest happiness," Wang Shen murmured to himself, standing there watching the little boy's departing figure.

After the little boy walked away, Wang Shen and Liang Zichen drove to the food stall that Wang Shen frequented.

Liang Zichen picked up the glass in front of Wang Shen and poured him a beer. "Captain Wang, you weren't finished speaking yet."

"What are you talking about? You mean that phone call? I'm sorry, I haven't come up with a reasonable explanation for that situation yet." After saying that, Wang Shen drank half a glass of beer and then shook his head.

Liang Zichen smiled and then waved his hand, "Of course not, it's after get off work, how can we keep talking about work? I was talking about your attitude towards the little boy."

"You seem quite interested in prying into other people's private affairs." Wang Shen said this in a flat tone, and Liang Zichen couldn't tell whether Wang Shen was happy or unhappy.

But after a while, Wang Shen slowly said, "As I just said, I will take special care of that little boy. Firstly, because I feel a connection with him, and secondly, because his experience is somewhat similar to mine."

"Love at first sight?" Liang Zichen's eyes widened in surprise at the word "love at first sight." "Captain Wang, I think you treat everyone the same. I never expected to hear such a sentimental word as 'love at first sight' from you."

Wang Shen sighed, "I'm not a robot, so naturally I have my own likes and dislikes."

"By the way, what experiences do you and that little boy have in common?"

“Because of my parents’ work, I was raised by my grandparents from a young age. They were very good to me, but sometimes I still felt lonely. In that respect, I’m much luckier than that little boy.” Wang Shen said this without much sadness on his face. It was unclear whether Wang Shen was used to hiding his feelings or simply accustomed to loneliness.
