Chapter Thirty-Four: An Unexpected Suicide

“Liang Li saw the man who gave Sang money, and I guess that man didn’t want Liang Li to see him. He thought Liang Li would reveal his secret, so he chose to kill her to silence her. But what secret does the murderer have? The biggest secret I can think of is that he bribed Sang to tell the truth about Zheng Wu killing Han Shuang. Even if our police find out about that, it won’t have much of an impact, right?” Wang Shen shrugged at Song Mu, looking helpless.

"By the way, on the day Sang had the accident, according to the driver, he saw a bright light and couldn't see the road conditions, which led to his hitting and killing Sang. But where did that bright light come from? If it were shining on that convex lens downstairs from this position, wouldn't it reflect a dazzling light?" Wang Shen spoke as if he were someone lost in the fog, eager to seek Song Mu's help.

Song Mu sat in his chair, his eyes mostly lifeless. He glanced at Wang Shen every now and then, then lowered his head again, seemingly deep in thought. Wang Shen didn't back down. He left the window and walked step by step towards Song Mu's desk. Wang Shen stood opposite Song Mu, his hands on the desk, his eyes fixed on Song Mu. Song Mu didn't meet Wang Shen's gaze, his head bowed solemnly, as if deep in thought.

"Oh, right, I suddenly remembered I have some things to take care of at my office. I hope Dr. Song can give me some time to consider what I said. When I visit you again tomorrow, I hope you can give me a satisfactory answer." After saying that, Wang Shen gently tapped on Song Mu's desk and left Song Mu's office.

"Hey, okay, send someone to keep an eye on someone. Yeah, go and tell them to intercept any long-distance bus or plane tickets they find him booking. Also, monitor Song Mu's cell phone and office phone today, record all calls, including the callers' personal information. Okay, thanks." Wang Shen had just left the office building where Song Mu worked when he called his colleagues at the bureau, instructing them to closely monitor Song Mu's movements tonight to prevent him from attempting to escape. Based on the evidence he currently possessed, Wang Shen could indeed apply for Song Mu's arrest. However, Wang Shen wanted to further investigate Song Mu's motives for bribing Sang and the reasons for killing Sang and Liang Li. Wang Shen firmly believed that a person in extreme panic would do illogical things, naturally making them more prone to revealing flaws. Therefore, this night was crucial. Wang Shen hoped Song Mu's actions would go as he wished.

Wang Shen returned to the police station and reviewed Liang Li's autopsy results. Aside from the fatal stab wound to the chest, there were no other obvious injuries on her body. Furthermore, there were no signs of sexual assault. The shoe size had also been compared and found to be identical to Song Mu's. Looking at these analysis reports, Wang Shen speculated about Song Mu's possible actions that evening. Suddenly, Wang Shen stretched his arms, rubbed the back of his neck, yawned, grabbed his coat, and left the police station.

Wang Shen hadn't slept so soundly in a long time, until a phone call woke him from his sweet dreams. "What! Are you sure? Wait, I'm coming right away!" Wang Shen hung up the phone, dressed as quickly as possible, quickly washed up, and stepped on the gas, speeding towards Song Mu's psychological clinic.

"Someone reported that Song Mu committed suicide!" These were the first words Wang Shen heard when he picked up his phone. Song Mu's actions completely exceeded Wang Shen's expectations. Wang Shen had initially thought Song Mu would do something foolish, like making a phone call to someone. However, according to his colleagues at the police station, they checked Song Mu's phone all night and found no call records. Furthermore, they reviewed the surveillance footage downstairs at Song Mu's mental health clinic and found no evidence that Song Mu had left. It wasn't until early this morning that the police station received news of Song Mu's suicide. The person who reported it was Xu Wen, Song Mu's only secretary.

Wang Shen pressed his temples as he drove. To be honest, he really couldn't understand Song Mu's way of handling things. What could be more terrifying than death? Was it really as Song Mu said yesterday, that some people have too much sorrow, and death is a kind of relief for them?

Not long after, Wang Shen's car stopped in front of Song Mu's office. Without bothering to park in the designated spot, Wang Shen hurriedly got out and rushed towards Song Mu's psychological clinic. Reaching the clinic entrance, he pulled back the police tape and stormed inside.

"Captain Wang, you're here. Look at that." A policeman saw Wang Shen arrive at the scene and immediately handed him a pair of rubber gloves, pointing to the computer screen on Song Mu's desk.

Wang Shen turned to face the computer screen, staring at its dim glow. An unnamed Word document was open on the screen. Wang Shen tried reading two lines: "Today I am finally free. I avenged Han Mo. Those who bullied Han Mo will pay the price..." This was actually Song Mu's confession!

The following is part of the confession:

Today I'm finally free. I've avenged Han Mo. Those who bullied her will pay the price. I also feel pathetically foolish; why did I fall in love with a woman I had rejected? But that's love—who can truly understand it? I still remember the first time I saw Han Mo. The melancholy expression on her face was clearly a symptom of depression. But her face, with its touch of classical beauty, coupled with the melancholy of depression, captivated me. I'm certain I fell in love with her then and there. I'm not someone who believes in love at first sight, but with her, I did. But fate doesn't always grant happiness so easily. I have a strong sense of moral purity. When I learned that she had been sexually assaulted by her stepfather, and more than once, I deliberately kept a safe distance from her. I couldn't accept Han Mo like that. To be honest, my requirements for a partner are purity and quiet. Han Mo didn't meet any of my expectations. But I ultimately underestimated the power of love. That night, when I learned of Han Mo's death, I truly realized that Han Mo's past experiences were insignificant compared to my love for her. Perhaps you'll say that I didn't love her that much. I don't know how to refute that, but the only thing I can do for her now is to make all those who bullied her pay the price.

Alright, now I'm going to start telling you the main points you wanted to know. My first target, of course, was Zheng Wu. This despicable scoundrel not only defiled Han Mo's body but also made her youth so tragic, and even made me resent Han Mo. I swore that I would avenge Han Mo and myself. I would make this scoundrel suffer an irredeemable fate. Later, through Han Mo's account and after my own extensive investigation, I found the hostess.
