Chapter 26 Preparing for Opening

The next day, Lao Du enlisted the help of a colleague at work who was quite skilled in electrical wiring. He bought a Hongtashan cable for free, and the colleague was delighted. He felt he had done a favor and gotten a Hongtashan cable. These days, Hongtashan cables are quite prestigious. He also got some wires and switch fuses from the office, and whenever he had a break or was off work, he'd go to the shop to fix the wiring. It took just two days to complete the job. After all, the original wiring was already there; it was just a matter of adding a few extra wires, a piece of cake for the electrician.

In the following days, when Lao Du had some free time, he went to the shop to help out. Lao Zhou helped with the cement flooring; men these days tend to do some handicrafts. After two days of hard work, Du Chen's parents painted the house themselves, and the decor was complete. Du Chen and Du Bin would go together to clean up after school at noon, as there was a lot of garbage left after their daily work.

After a busy day until Friday, the store was finally cleaned up. On Wednesday, while waiting for the cement floor to dry, Du Chen's father took Du Chen's mother to the city again and ordered some shelves and glass cabinets at the second-hand market. Early this morning, Du Chen's father drove the company's double-row car and Du Chen's mother to the city again to prepare to bring back the shelves and glass cabinets, while Du Chen and Du Bin continued to go to school.

"Old Du, the shelves need to be re-oiled after they are pulled back today. The day before yesterday, I saw that many parts of the shelves were almost rusted. Also, some of the glass in the glass cabinets is not working well and needs to be replaced." Sitting in the car, Du Chen's mother said to Comrade Old Du.

"Well, I've already contacted the glass shop. When we get the stuff back, I'll have them cut a few new panes of glass and replace them. I also found some white paint from work, so I'll finish it today. I hope to open on Monday."

"Okay, what about buying goods? Should we stop by the small commodities shop today? Or should we wait until tomorrow, Saturday?"

"Let's put up the shelves later and see if there's enough space. If there's still room, we'll go for small commodities and pull as much as we can."

Chatting all the way, the couple finally arrived at the second-hand market.

"Boss, you're here. Look, I've gathered all the shelves and glass cabinets you need in the past two days. Come and check them out." The boss handed Lao Du a cigarette and led the couple to where the shelves and glass cabinets were placed.

The Du couple carefully checked it and saw that there was nothing wrong with it, so they said to the boss, "Okay, the goods are good. Load them into the car. Use some rags to cushion them so that the glass cabinet won't break on the way."

"No problem, boss. I just spent two days consulting with colleagues to get what you need. I will definitely protect it for you." The second-hand dealer patted his chest and said to Du Chen's father.

After all the shelves were loaded onto the truck, Du Chen's father checked the number and confirmed it was correct. He paid the bill, said goodbye, and the two of them got into the car and left.

"Lao Du, I think there's still room for some things in the car. How about we go to the small commodity store?"

"Okay, do you have enough money?" Du Chen's father asked.

"That's enough. I brought the money with me before I left today, just in case I didn't bring any money when I was going to buy some goods."

"Okay, then go directly to the small commodity store, buy something and come back."

The two of them went to the small commodity store again, put in a pile of stationery, exercise books and other sundries that they had picked out last week, and then rushed home.

Back in the living area, it was almost noon, and instead of going home, they went straight to the store. They first put the stationery and other items in a room, and then unloaded the shelves and glass cabinets. Fortunately, the shelves and glass cabinets were not very heavy, and after a while, they finally moved the shelves and glass cabinets into the house.

"Wife, I think it's getting late. Don't go back to cook at noon. Go to the market and buy some food and eat in the store at noon." Du Chen's father looked at the time and saw that it was almost time for the children to get out of school, so he said to Du Chen's mother.

"Okay, then you stay in the store and watch out for your son passing by so he doesn't run back home. I'll go get him some food."

"No need to look. They came in when they saw the door was open. I'll go to the oil shelf and ask someone to replace those broken glass pieces this afternoon." Du Chen's father said as he walked towards the corner of the room where paint and brushes were placed.

"Okay, I'll go buy some food first." After saying this, Du Chen's mother hurried out the door.

Du Chen's father first put some old newspapers under the shelf, and then started brushing the shelf from top to bottom.

"Dad, stop working and go home for dinner."

Du Chen Primary School finishes school early, at 11:30. As soon as he walked out of the school gate, he saw his own store was open, so he came straight over.

As soon as Du Chen entered the house, he saw shelves and glass cabinets in the store, and his father was carefully brushing the shelves with a brush.

"Let's eat here at noon. We came back late and didn't have time to cook. Your mother went to the market to buy food. You should find a place to sit down and don't get paint on your body." Comrade Lao Du said to Du Chen without turning his head.

"Oh, Dad, do you have a brush? I'll help you too."

"Look at the southeast corner of the house. I remember there's a brush there. Be careful not to get it on your clothes. It'll be hard to wash, and then your mom will scold me again."

Ever since the fight over Du Chen's submission and the incident of him going to the small commodity store to buy things, Comrade Du no longer treated Du Chen as a second-grade student. So, Comrade Du usually did not stop Du Chen from doing anything he wanted.

Du Chen turned around, found a brush, and joined his dad in washing the shelves. A little later, Du Bin arrived after school. Now, whenever the two brothers passed by the store on their way to or from school, they'd check in, walking right in if they saw it open. Du Bin, seeing his dad and brother busy, grabbed a brush and joined in washing the shelves.

"Come on, stop working, come and wash your hands and eat." While several people were busy, Du Chen's mother came back carrying a plastic bag.
