Chapter 5: Starting from Submission

Du Chen has always been a passionate reader, even from a young age. He doesn't like textbooks, but he's open to all kinds of books. He's read so much, and while his writing skills haven't improved, he's definitely developed a creative mind.

So, Du Chen is now thinking about whether he can earn some pocket money by writing something. At his age, writing essays for elementary school students is the best option.

Du Chen took the time to look through his brother's books and found several copies of "Student Days". Du Chen looked at the book information. This is a journal of Longcheng, the capital of Shanxi Province. It serves primary school students and is a monthly magazine with stories, essays, and student dynamics. There is also a submission address, which is close to

Deyun City is also close, which is a perfect place for Du Chen to submit his work.

Du Chen looked at the journal carefully and studied its manuscript acceptance criteria to facilitate his acceptance of the manuscript. After all, if the manuscript was rejected, the money from the stamps would be quite a bit for him.

After carefully studying several copies of "Student Days," Du Chen had a rough idea in mind. He decided to start writing as soon as he had time. He spent about a week revising and considering the topic, and he would write a test essay first.

After three days of intermittent writing and another three days of revisions, Du Chen's first essay was finally ready. He went to the school gate to buy a few pages of manuscript paper, rewrote the essay, put it in an envelope, affixed a stamp, and took advantage of Sunday to go to the post office to mail the letter. The post office was not far from home, just outside the living area. A forty-minute round trip was enough, and the rest was just waiting.

"Son, what have you been doing every night these days? You don't even watch TV anymore?"

Du Chen's abnormal behavior in the past few days still attracted his mother's attention.

"Mom, I didn't do anything. I just wrote an essay and sent it to 'Student Days'. I just wanted to test my ability."

Du Chen had thought about this a long time ago and knew that he would have to tell his parents about this sooner or later. After all, if the manuscript was accepted, he would not be able to collect the payment draft himself and would have to rely on his parents.

Du Chen's mother was a bit surprised. She'd always been easygoing, never needing adult supervision in his studies. He'd always come home from school to do his homework, finishing only after watching TV or visiting the kids upstairs. But she hadn't expected him to have such independent ideas.

In comparison, the eldest son is particularly playful and never returns home on time after school. He always fights with his classmates on the way. Thinking of this, Du Chen's mother also has a headache. The eldest son Du Bin is already in the second grade of junior high school this year, but he is still not serious about studying. He will face the high school entrance examination next year, and he doesn't know whether he can pass it next year. Should he go to a technical secondary school or continue to go to high school?

"Son, you haven't learned to write essays in second grade yet, right? Aren't you writing diaries now? Who can you learn to write essays from?"

"I didn't learn from anyone. I just looked at my brother's composition books when I had nothing to do. We have a lot of them. I read them and wanted to try my hand at writing. So I replied like that."

"My son is awesome, can you show it to mom?"

"Mom, I sent it out right after I wrote it. It's gone now."

To be honest, Du Chen is still a little shy.

"Okay, then tell Mom what you wrote."

"Mom, then, I'm going to watch cartoons."

Du Chen quickly found an excuse to get rid of his mother. If the submission was successful, it would be fine, but if it failed, it would be embarrassing. This was the first time in his two lifetimes that Du Chen had submitted a work, and he felt a little unsure.

"This child is still shy." Du Chen's mother smiled and said to herself.

Du Chen turned on the TV and tuned it to CCTV-1. Animation City was playing. Although his eyes were fixed on the TV, he was secretly thinking in his mind.

Although he was full of confidence before, this was the first time in his life that he had submitted a manuscript. After sending the letter, Du Chen couldn't help but feel a little worried.

"It all depends on whether I can succeed this time. If I fail, I'll try again. I just don't believe I can live two lifetimes and still not be able to publish an elementary school essay. Even if it's accepted, I'll keep writing. After all, writing can bring glory to myself, and my words at home will be taken seriously.

Although I know some things about the future, I have to let my parents listen to my advice." Du Chen said silently in his heart.

Around ten o'clock in the evening, Du Chen's parents finished watching TV series and prepared to turn off the lights and go to bed. Du Chen and Du Bin had also fallen asleep long ago.

Lying on the bed, Du Chen's mother patted her father and said, "Old Du, let me tell you, didn't I tell you yesterday that our second child has been a little abnormal these past two days..."

Before he could finish his words, Du Chen's father said, "Well, what's the matter? What did you find?"

"Listen to me and don't interrupt. I asked the second child today, guess what?" Du Chen's mother waited for her father to ask her, but there was silence.

"Why don't you speak?" Du Chen's mother pushed his father.

"Didn't you tell me not to interrupt and just listen to you?"

"Didn't you hear me ask you? Forget it, I'll just tell you directly."

In the darkness, Du Chen's father opened his mouth but said nothing.

"Well, let me tell you, my son wrote an essay these days and submitted it. I also asked him, didn't you learn to write essays in the second grade? As a result, my son told me that he learned it by reading books. What do you think? My son is smart, isn't he? He inherited this from me." Du Chen's mother said happily.

"Oh, that's great. Didn't you ask your son what he wrote?"

"He asked. I wanted to see what was written on it, but my son said he had sent it and it was gone. I asked him again if he could tell his mother what was written on it, but he felt embarrassed and ran away without saying anything." Du Chen's mother said with a smile.

"Yeah, he's definitely shy. My second child has been a bit introverted since he was young. But regardless of whether he can succeed or not, it's good that he has the idea and the courage to carry it out."

"Yeah, I think so too. I just hope he can keep it up in the future. Don't be as naughty as the boss, just like you."
