Chapter 7 My Dad

Du Chen didn't dare to be distracted during the head teacher's class. If he listened carefully, the class time would pass quickly.

"Du Chen, come on, come with me to the office."

After class, Teacher Wu and Du Chen said, "There's an extracurricular activity after two classes in the afternoon, also about 40 minutes long. Then there's a study session, which is really just for the kids to do their homework. So there's plenty of time."

Du Chen followed Teacher Wu to the office.

"Go over there and grab a stool and sit there. Let's talk about this email."

"Teacher, I wrote an essay some time ago. I happened to have a magazine called "Student Times" at home, so I thought about submitting it to try. So I wrote an essay and sent it in to try." Du Chen answered truthfully.

"So this email is a reply to you? Has it passed?" asked Teacher Wu.

"Teacher, I don't know either. I just saw this email today and I don't know anything."

"Here you go. Open it now and let the teacher see it." Teacher Wu said with a smile.

As he said that, he handed the mail on the table to Du Chen and also gave him a paper cutter.

Du Chen deftly opened the mail, anxious to know what was inside. He opened the mail and pulled out a magazine and a small envelope.

Teacher Wu reached out to take the magazine, which was "Student Days", and gestured to Du Chen to continue opening the envelope.

Du Chen tore open the small envelope. Inside was a money order and a piece of letter paper. He looked up at Teacher Wu, who was flipping through a magazine, so he took a look at the money order himself. Sure enough, it was the twenty yuan manuscript fee. He put the money order aside and couldn't wait to open the letter paper to see what was written on it.

"Hello, Du Chen. Congratulations on having your composition "My Dad" accepted by the magazine. The sample issue and the royalties are being sent to you. I hope you will continue to work hard..." The rest were just some polite words.

Du Chen was so excited that if he weren't in the office, he would have wanted to shout out his approval. It wasn't just for his successful submission, it also meant he had changed the fate of his past life.

Teacher Wu, observing Du Chen's performance and looking at the magazine, guessed that Du Chen's submission had been successful. She also found an essay in the catalog with Du Chen's name as the author, and couldn't help but sigh, "This kid is quite good! He's already learned how to write an essay before the course even requires it, and he's even successfully submitted it."

Teacher Wu found Du Chen's composition according to the page number and read it carefully.

Du Chen looked eagerly at the book "Student Days" in Teacher Wu's hand and complained in his heart: "Except for the fact that I wrote the composition myself, the rest of it has nothing to do with me."

Du Chen also wanted to see what his composition would look like when printed in lead type, but he couldn't snatch it from the teacher, so he was so anxious that he scratched his head.

The composition wasn't long, so Teacher Wu finished reading it quickly. Seeing Du Chen's anxious look, she couldn't help but smile and handed the magazine to him. She also took the letter and glanced at it. Sure enough, it was the reply from the magazine, notifying him of the acceptance of the manuscript.

"Well written, Du Chen. Who taught you how to write an essay?" asked Teacher Wu.

Du Chen flipped through his own composition. Although it was something he wrote himself, it was the first time he saw it printed in a magazine, and he felt quite happy.

When Du Chen heard Teacher Wu's question, he didn't even look up and said, "Teacher, no one taught me. I watched the original version of "Student Days" that my brother and I used to watch. I thought it wasn't difficult, so I wanted to give it a try. I didn't expect to succeed." His tone was full of joy.

"Really? Then you are quite talented, Du Chen. Keep it up. The teacher hopes to see more of your works in the magazine. You must work hard. If you have any questions, you can come and ask me." Teacher Wu encouraged.

"Okay, teacher. I will definitely work hard."

"Well, take your things and go back to the classroom. Remember to bring them to show your parents after school." Teacher Wu reminded.

"Okay, teacher. Goodbye, teacher!"

"Wife, when are we going to eat? I'm so tired after a busy day." Du Chen's father shouted at the kitchen door as he entered the house after get off work.

"Come right over here with the bowl and chopsticks." Du Chen's mother responded from the kitchen.

When Du Chen heard his father's voice, he hurried out of the big house. Usually, his brother Du Bin had a desk in the small house, and Du Chen, who was still young, usually did his homework at the dining table in the big house.

Du Chen had just been in the house preparing to write another essay for submission. He was in high spirits, so he naturally struck while the iron was hot. Besides, he could make some money. Twenty yuan was a lot. It was 1996, and Du Chen's father's monthly salary was only about 500 yuan. Du Chen's usual pocket money was only a few cents. Fifty cents was a huge sum, and a few cents didn't come every day. Twenty yuan was a real fortune for a child.

The whole family had just sat down at the dinner table to eat dinner when Du Chen turned around, pulled out a piece of mail from his schoolbag, and placed it on the table like a treasure. He said to his parents, "Mom, Dad, and Brother, look, my essay has been published in 'Student Times'."

"Is this true?"

As they spoke, the parents had already opened the mail on the table and saw the magazine and reply letter inside. They carefully read the contents of the reply letter and "Student Days". For a moment, no one spoke.

Du Bin was also surprised to see his younger brother next to him. He really didn't expect that his younger brother, who was seven years younger than him and was still in the second grade, could actually publish an article in a magazine. Although it was just an essay, he was only in the second grade, and it was his first time to publish it.
