Chapter 56: Strange

Zhao Yunxiang was rubbing a gray coat, and there was a noticeable bulge in the pocket of the coat.

Who didn't empty their pockets? Zhao Yunxiang was stunned.

Zhao Yunxiang reached out and pulled out a pink Dacron bra from her pocket. The piece of fabric was about the size of a palm. Zhao Yunxiang was a seamstress, and just by looking at it, she could tell the wearer had a fairly large chest.

Who was so unrefined as to stuff something like that into a coat pocket? Zhao Yunxiang's face flushed red with embarrassment.

Early in the morning, Wu Jinfeng threw a pile of clothes to Zhao Yunxiang with a gloomy face to wash. Zhao Yunxiang knew that some of the clothes in the pile belonged to her eldest brother Zhou Zhigang's family, and some belonged to her second brother Zhou Zhiqiang's family. However, since her mother-in-law asked her to wash them, Zhao Yunxiang did not say anything.

Zhao Yunxiang knew that her mother-in-law had been upset the previous day, so she had troubled Wu Jinfeng by bringing out so many dirty clothes early in the morning to vent her anger. Wu Jinfeng was always like this: if she got upset here, she would go back to make amends elsewhere, or else she would rant and rave all day long, leaving the whole family in a state of restlessness.

Never mind, it's just laundry. Just consider it respect for the elderly. It's no big deal to do a little more work. Zhao Yunxiang consoled herself. She had been in the Zhou family for eight years. If she had argued with Wu Jinfeng about everything, she would have been angry every day and would have done nothing else.

According to the rules of Yuyuan County, underwear and other items were washed by the women in each household. Some women, who were more particular, would even hang their underwear secretly in their rooms, never hanging them out in public.

The unlikely appearance of a bra amidst a sea of trousers and jackets—did this signify something? Was it a mistake? Or was this clothing not owned by the Zhou family?

Clothes in that era were basically either blue or gray for men and women, and there were only one or two styles. Just by looking at the clothes, Zhao Yunxiang was not sure who they belonged to.

The bra is pink, with two thin straps and a very trendy style. Zhao Yunxiang is a tailor and she knows exactly what styles of bras are popular in Sanhe Town in the past two years.

Back then, women mostly wore one-piece tank tops, and bras were rare. Two years ago, the lingerie counters at the Yuyuan County Department Store began stocking these novelties. When they were first put on display, for over a month, no one dared to ask what they were.

It was the educated youth from the city who were more knowledgeable. After they secretly explained the situation, the young women and wives in Yuyuan County gradually accepted the trendy underwear such as bras. However, this trend was always kept within a small circle.

Young women and young wives working in Sanhe Town would follow the trend and secretly go to a tailor to make a few bras for themselves. The ones from the department store were too expensive. For the price of one, you could make three by scrounging fabric yourself! People in that era were used to being frugal.

Few rural women around Sanhe Town use such trendy items as bras.

Zhao Yunxiang was clever and deft. She could make anything she wanted to wear after just one look. The few bras available in Zhoujia Village were all made by Zhao Yunxiang. She was certain the bra she was holding was one she had never seen before.

Zhao Yunxiang was a little puzzled. The two sisters-in-law of the Zhou family were traditional rural women who didn't care about fashion at all. In the summer, they would wear a large vest under their light shirts. Zhao Yunxiang had never seen either of them wear a bra.

This pink bra suddenly appeared among the Zhou family's pile of clothes, making Zhao Yunxiang feel a little uneasy. Unable to figure it out, Zhao Yunxiang had to put the matter aside.

Zhao Yunxiang looked around and found that no one noticed the clothes in her hand. She quickly put the bra back into the pocket of the coat, and then stuffed the coat under the pile of clothes.

After doing all this, Zhao Yunxiang let out a long sigh, raised her sleeve to wipe the sweat from her face, and continued to struggle with the basin of dirty clothes.

"Xiaojiu, Xiaojiu, go to your vegetable garden and pick some green onions for grandma!" In the big kitchen, Wu Jinfeng's loud voice came through the window lattice to the backyard, startling several little sparrows who were fighting wits and courage with the old hen.

Hearing Wu Jinfeng's call, Zhou Yuanyuan rolled her eyes, still methodically punching. Old Mrs. Wu was truly a jerk. The vegetable garden was right in front of the kitchen, and it was only a few steps away to pick some green onions. She was constantly ordering people around, and Zhou Yuanyuan didn't bother to pay any attention to her.

In the kitchen, Wu Jinfeng's chopsticks flew up and down, as if venting her anger, quickly pushing lumps of batter into the pot. Wu Jinfeng's scallion noodle dumplings were a unique skill, and most people couldn't match her skills.

There was a large pot of boiling water in the pot. As soon as the batter was put in, it floated in the water and began to emit the fragrance of the batter.

"Xiaojiu, hurry up!"

When Zhou Yuanyuan heard Wu Jinfeng's urging, she didn't even move her eyebrows. Instead, Zhou Jiasheng moved his feet, wanting to help Wu Jinfeng pick onions.

"Brother, grandpa said that we must practice boxing in one go and we can leave only after we finish practicing." Zhou Yuanyuan's crisp voice stopped Zhou Jiasheng's "unusual movement" in time.

Zhao Yunxiang heard her mother-in-law Wu Jinfeng's cry, shook off the foam on her hands, and stood up. It was so nice to see the undisguised disgust on her daughter Zhou Yuanyuan's face.

Zhao Yunxiang's heart tightened. Wu Jinfeng was a domineering person, but elders were still elders after all, and as a junior, respecting the elderly was a necessary virtue.

"Yuanyuan, your grandma is calling you! Answer quickly."

What Zhao Yunxiang was most worried about was that her daughter would suffer. Wu Jinfeng was just like that. If she asked someone to do something and didn't get a response, she would scold them.

"No, there are so many onions in grandma's own vegetable garden. Why should she pick ours? We only planted a few of them." The coldness and stubbornness in Zhou Yuanyuan's voice made Zhao Yunxiang stunned.

Right! Next to the kitchen was a vegetable garden of over a hundred square meters, half planted with green onions and half with chives. Even if Wu Jinfeng went to pick them herself, it wouldn't take her more than half a minute. Unlike their family, the vegetable plot was less than ten square meters, and the vegetables in it were pitifully few.

But...my mother-in-law is just that kind of person. She always likes to take advantage of small things. If I don't give her this bunch of green onions today, I don't know what unpleasant words she will say later.

"Yuanyuan, your grandma wants some. Hurry up and pick some green onions and send them to her. Ah~!" Zhao Yunxiang's voice unconsciously took on a hint of flattery and soothing as she spoke. The three of them were still on Wu Jinfeng's "blacklist"! If they angered her again, the consequences would be unpredictable.

Zhou Yuanyuan didn't say anything else. Her motionless figure already expressed her dissatisfaction very well.
