Chapter 57 Shallots

Zhou Yuanyuan knew that her mother, Zhao Yunxiang, was smart and capable, but unfortunately, when it came to matters concerning the Zhou family, she would only give in.

Yesterday, Wu Jinfeng went too far and threatened to take away all of Zhao Yunxiang's food and a year's dividend. To avoid starvation, Zhao Yunxiang had fought back. This morning, Zhao Yunxiang's anger had subsided, and she had become the well-behaved daughter-in-law of the Zhou family again.

My dear mother, can you be more majestic? Zhou Yuanyuan hated her for not fighting.

In Zhao Yunxiang's opinion, they were just a few onions. Not to mention that she had them in her vegetable garden, even if she didn't, if the child's grandmother asked for them, Zhao Yunxiang would go and borrow them for Wu Jinfeng, even if it meant borrowing them.

Unfortunately, Zhao Yunxiang didn't know that with some things and some people, the sky wouldn't be clear if you just took a step back. The more you retreat, the tighter they'll push you. In the end, you might even lose your life!

"No! I can't give it to you!" Zhou Yuanyuan looked away from her hand, met Zhao Yunxiang's anxious eyes, and shook her head firmly. She decided that from today on, she would teach Zhao Yunxiang how to say no.

Zhao Yunxiang was stunned. The daughter before her felt unfamiliar to her. Yuanyuan had always been well-behaved and obedient, so why was she fussing over a handful of green onions today?

In Zhou Yuanyuan's opinion, Wu Jinfeng was spoiled by her mother. No matter what the matter was, no matter whether it was reasonable or not, as long as Wu Jinfeng spoke, it was like an ancient emperor issuing an imperial decree. No matter how difficult it was, Zhao Yunxiang would help her do it.

From small things like a handful of green onions, a ladle of rice, and an egg to big things like... Dad Zhou Zhixin's future and Mom Zhao Yunxiang's health. How unlucky Zhou Yuanyuan was that she had to be related to Wu Jinfeng in both her lives!

Zhao Yunxiang knew that Wu Jinfeng had little patience, especially when it came to her family, mother and son. Wu Jinfeng never hid her dislike for them. Moreover, she had just offended Wu Jinfeng yesterday, and she was upset and looking for trouble.

Sure enough, after a few seconds, Wu Jinfeng didn't hear Zhou Yuanyuan's answer, and yelled impatiently: "Xiaojiu, are you deaf? The milk dumpling soup is almost mushy!"

Zhao Yunxiang shuddered at Wu Jinfeng's roar. She hurriedly opened the fence and entered the vegetable patch, frantically picking onions. At this time of year, the vegetables in the field grew slowly, and when people needed onions for their meals, they usually just picked the tips. Leaving the roots in the soil, they would sprout again in ten days or so.

Zhou Yuanyuan sighed, looked at her tiny hands and short legs, and fell silent. Was she still too weak? If she had a stronger fighting ability, could she forcefully stop her mother from "acting foolishly" from time to time?

Zhou Yuanyuan could guess what Zhao Yunxiang was thinking. She just wanted "a harmonious family brings prosperity"!

"Xiaojiu, are you dead? It takes you half a day to do such a small thing! You little bitch xxxxxxx" Wu Jinfeng's angry voice came over, and the curse ended with a string of obscenities that were unbearable to hear.

Listening to Wu Jinfeng's loud and vigorous scolding, Zhou Yuanyuan felt a chill in her heart.

Is this her elder? Is this her family? If something doesn't go her way, she'll spew dirty, foul language and won't stop until she's turned the world upside down.

"Bah! Even if you eat delicious onions, your mouth won't change!" Zhou Yuanyuan angrily glanced at the kitchen, her eyes even colder. If she weren't so small and powerless, Zhou Yuanyuan would have rushed to the kitchen and kicked that hateful old woman.

"Sister, don't be angry." Zhou Jiasheng felt upset when he saw Zhou Yuanyuan's gloomy face. His mother ignored his sister's words and gave green onions to Grandma, which made Zhou Jiasheng feel that his sister was being ignored by her mother. Is this neglect making her sad?

"Mom, I'm coming, right away." Zhao Yunxiang didn't bother to explain anything to her daughter. She answered in a loud voice towards the kitchen and quickened her hands' movements. Soon she had picked a handful of juicy green onions.

Most of the onions in the vegetable garden were gone in an instant. It seems that Zhou Yuanyuan’s family will not need to put onions in their vegetables for the next ten days or so.

Zhao Yunxiang ignored the sparsely picked onions in the vegetable patch and hurried out to hand the onions to her angry daughter. She planned to have Zhou Yuanyuan take them and appease her irritable mother-in-law at the same time.

Zhao Yunxiang knew Wu Jinfeng's temper. Her mother-in-law specifically asked Yuanyuan to pick the onions. If the person who delivered the onions was not Yuanyuan, both mother and daughter would be scolded.

Zhou Yuanyuan twisted her body and ignored him. Her heart was filled with disappointment, both for Zhao Yunxiang and for herself.

Zhao Yunxiang looked at her usually well-behaved daughter with surprise. Not daring to delay Wu Jinfeng's request for the onions, she quickly washed them in the clean well water she had just drawn for laundry and handed them to Wu Jinfeng.

Having been married to the Zhou family for eight years, Zhao Yunxiang was all too familiar with Wu Jinfeng's temper. Wu Jinfeng held absolute authority within the Zhou family, and her words were orders. Everyone in the Zhou family, young and old, including the patriarch, Zhou Chunping, had to obey Wu Jinfeng.

Not to mention Zhou Yuanyuan, her granddaughter. If Wu Jinfeng was unhappy because of a bunch of green onions, what would await the three of them, mother and daughter, would not just be the pain in their ears.

"Old Third Family, you can't spoil your children blindly. If they can't even do the little things, what can they do when they grow up? Especially girls. If they are raised pampered in their parents' home, won't they have to do all kinds of work when they marry into their husband's family? It's better for them to suffer a little now than for people to say later that our Zhou family doesn't know how to teach their children!"

Wu Jinfeng stretched her face and glanced at the cleanly washed green onions on the chopping board. She was somewhat satisfied with Zhao Yunxiang's consideration, but she complained.

Wu Jinfeng was like this. She asked Yuanyuan to pick green onions, but Zhao Yunxiang brought them instead. Even though Zhao Yunxiang did it quickly and well, Wu Jinfeng was not satisfied. Wu Jinfeng was not dissatisfied with the quality of the food, but felt that her high authority in the family was being challenged.

"Mom is right. Your daughter-in-law always remembers your teachings and dares not relax her discipline on the two children. Yuanyuan had a fever last time and is still weak. I was afraid that Mom would need it urgently, so I helped her. I won't dare to do it again next time and will definitely let the children do it themselves." Zhao Yunxiang admitted her mistake good-temperedly.

It was not known whether it was because Zhao Yunxiang’s attitude of admitting her mistake was good, or because Wu Jinfeng felt guilty about Zhao Yunxiang’s words about Yuanyuan falling into the water and being weak, but Wu Jinfeng curled her lips and swallowed the words she wanted to say next to teach the mother and daughter a lesson.

"Mom, if everything is fine, can I still go wash clothes?" Zhao Yunxiang saw Wu Jinfeng cutting green onions on the chopping board with drooping eyelids. She wanted to go out but didn't dare, so she asked timidly.

"Is this all the clothes you haven't washed yet? You're so lazy! Go away, go away. I get angry when I see you!" Wu Jinfeng raised her head and gave Zhao Yunxiang a cold look, cursing her.

Zhao Yunxiang didn't dare to speak again. She lowered her head and hurried out of the kitchen.
