Chapter 58: Being Beaten

Wu Jinfeng's loud voice woke up everyone in the Zhou family, young and old, whether they were asleep or not.

Zhou Chunping walked out of the room with a gloomy face. This old woman was really unreasonable. She knew that he didn't sleep well at night and was slouching in the morning, but she kept yelling at him. It made him so angry.

Zhou Chunping went to the kitchen with a gloomy face and found Wu Jinfeng busy at the stove. There was a bowl of fragrant noodle soup on the table. His expression looked much better.

Wu Jinfeng is a skilled noodle dumpling soup maker, and Zhou Chunping loves it. Back in Daxing City, when Zhou Chunping's grandfather was still alive, noodle dumpling soup was a common dish on the family dinner table. Zhou Chunping would always devour two large bowls. It was Wu Jinfeng's skill in making dumpling soup that initially endeared him to her.

As Zhou Chunping savored the familiar taste, his mind drifted back to the younger Wu Jinfeng. Back then, Wu Jinfeng wasn't as mean-spirited as she is now, but rather pretty and hardworking. Now, Wu Jinfeng was as lazy as a pig, pushing all the chores onto her third brother's family and spending her days goofing around the village.

Old La, old La, his face was covered with wrinkles, and the old woman's black hair was half white. Ultimately, it was his past that had implicated her, causing her to suffer in this rural area. Zhou Chunping felt a rare pang of guilt.

Before Zhou Chunping could finish his recollection, a "bang" was heard from Zhou Zhigang's house next to the kitchen. It was like the muffled sound of a person falling to the ground, followed by a burst of crying. It was from his eldest daughter-in-law Li Chunjiao.

What happened? Zhou Chunping stopped eating and pricked up his ears, listening to the noises coming from Zhou Zhigang's house. The eldest brother and his wife had lived together for so many years and had never fought before, so why was there such a big commotion today?

Zhou Zhigang only yelled a few words at Li Chunjiao, but she didn't answer. She just kept crying in a hoarse voice.

"Dabao, Dabao, what's wrong? It's so early in the morning." Before Zhou Chunping could stand up, Wu Jinfeng had already run to the kitchen door and kept asking.

We just got our food yesterday, and my eldest son came home last night smiling and joking. Why is he so angry after a long night's sleep? What happened?

"Mom, it's okay." Zhou Zhigang said in a muffled voice.

"Why are you okay? If there's something wrong, Mom, Mom, please give me some advice." Li Chunjiao's hair was loose, and even her cotton jacket was draped loosely around her. Seeing Zhou Zhigang's ferocious expression, as if he wanted to eat her, Li Chunjiao was so scared that she threw open the door and rushed out. It's terrible. I don't know if Zhou Zhigang's mind is confused by the phlegm today. It's really scary!

In her panic, Li Chunjiao's foot was accidentally caught on the threshold and she fell out of the door with a clang. If Wu Jinfeng hadn't stood outside the door and helped her, Li Chunjiao would definitely have fallen.

"Dad, Dad, don't hit Mom." Zhou Meimei's crying voice came from inside the door.

Why did he resort to violence? Wu Jinfeng was surprised.

Zhou Zhigang has a bad temper and usually stays at home in a depressed mood and rarely smiles, but this is the first time he has hit his wife.

There were two red slap marks on Li Chunjiao's face, one on the left and one on the right, which looked funny and symmetrical.

Li Chunjiao grabbed Wu Jinfeng's arm, crying breathlessly, and said, "Mom, I really didn't take Zhigang's things. He insisted that I take them out. Where can I find anything for him?"

"What is that?" Wu Jinfeng was confused, dizzy by the long list of things her eldest daughter-in-law said.

"I don't know either! Zhigang got up early this morning and asked me to hand over something. I asked him what it was, but he didn't tell me and just slapped me twice." Li Chunjiao cried until her face was covered in tears and snot. Over the years, although Zhou Zhigang was not talkative and not very considerate to Li Chunjiao, he never hit her.

This morning, Li Chunjiao hadn't gotten up yet, and Zhou Zhigang slapped her twice in the face while she was dazed. Not only was he dragged off the bed to the ground, and half of her arm was injured.

"Who else could it be if not you? How could good clothes disappear at home?" Zhou Zhigang angrily chased out of the room and cursed, "You old woman, all you do is pick men's pockets all day long. If there's less food or drink at home, will you?"

Gu Dahua's family was also woken up and stood aside to watch the excitement. When Gu Dahua heard this, she couldn't help but interrupt and said, "Sister-in-law, didn't you say that big brother gave you money every month for safekeeping? So this is how it is kept?"

Li Chunjiao always showed off in front of Gu Dahua, saying that Zhou Zhigang gave her all the family money and grain for safekeeping, which made Gu Dahua very angry. Zhou Zhiqiang and his wife had always been the head of the family, so Gu Dahua had to ask Zhou Zhiqiang for money for anything she wanted to buy.

The three sisters-in-law of the Zhou family, Li Chunjiao and Gu Dahua, were all arranged for marriage by Wu Jinfeng for her sons. Gu Dahua knew that she could not compare with Zhao Yunxiang, because Zhao Yunxiang was the apple of the third son's eye. Zhou Zhixin spent a lot of effort to marry her.

Zhou Zhixin treated Zhao Yunxiang incredibly well. When he was home, he'd rush to do all the heavy chores, never once saying a harsh word to her. Gu Dahua was jealous, but since Zhou Zhixin's time at home was so short, she didn't envy Zhao Yunxiang's treatment. Furthermore, since Zhou Zhixin was gone, Zhao Yunxiang had to do all the heavy and dirty work alone. Her mother-in-law, Wu Jinfeng, also found ways to make things difficult for her. Gu Dahua's attitude towards Zhao Yunxiang was one of disdain mixed with a touch of sympathy.

Li Chunjiao was different. Both Li Chunjiao and Gu Dahua were prostitutes under Wu Jinfeng's tutelage. Li Chunjiao's appearance bore no resemblance to the "jiao" in her name. She was short and plump, with dark skin. Her eyes were rather bright, and her voice was gruff, like a man's.

Gu Dahahua thinks she is of average appearance, but compared to Li Chunjiao, she can be considered a true flower.

Li Chunjiao, relying on her status as the eldest daughter-in-law, entered the family earlier than Gu Dahua, and often acted like the eldest sister-in-law in front of Gu Dahua. Zhou Zhigang, being the village accountant, held a higher position than Zhou Zhiqiang, and thus Gu Dahua automatically felt inferior to Li Chunjiao.

Yesterday at the warehouse, Li Chunjiao asked Gu Dahua to help walk Wu Jinfeng home, but she hid. After returning home, Li Chunjiao complained to Zhou Zhiqiang, saying that Gu Dahua ignored the elderly and didn't try to stop her mother from getting angry. Zhou Zhiqiang was so angry that he almost slapped Gu Dahua.

Gu Dahua must have hated Li Chunjiao. Today, when she saw Li Chunjiao being beaten by Zhou Zhigang, she immediately jumped out to finish her off.

"You chatterbox, no one will think you're dumb if you don't speak." Zhou Zhiqiang pulled Gu Dahua and scolded her.
