Chapter 22 Buying a Computer

"Let's have porridge for breakfast, Mom, can you fry an egg for me?" Yu Yang made a small request.

After washing up, Chen Hong first cooked rice and mung bean porridge, then steamed two buns and fried two eggs. After serving the rice and setting the table, she also served a plate of cucumber pickles.

"Mom, your pickled cucumbers are so delicious! They're fragrant, crunchy, and a little spicy. They're perfect with porridge. And Mom's fried eggs and steamed buns are also great; they're all my favorites."

Yu Yang showered Chen Hong with a long, mindless compliment in the morning, making her laugh so hard she almost choked on her food. "If it's delicious, eat more, but don't overeat. When we go to Grandpa's house later, I'll pack a bottle for you to take to Grandpa."

"Okay, I understand." After breakfast, Yu Yang took the pickled vegetables to the old house. Chen Hong washed the dishes, scrubbed the pots and pans, tidied the kitchen, did the laundry, cleaned the chicken and duck coop, trimmed the cucumbers, tomatoes, and eggplants, and weighed down the wine bottles.

After finishing her chores at home, Chen Hong changed her clothes and shoes, slung a basket over her shoulder, and took a sickle and hoe to the orchard. She first checked the branches that had been pressed out, then dug a small trench next to each branch and watered them one by one, hoping they would take root quickly this year.

She also weeded the cornfield, finishing around 11 a.m. Seeing that there were still two acres of peanuts to harvest, she decided to come back in the afternoon. She filled a basket with tender grass and carried it home to feed the chickens and ducks.

My son isn't home, so I keep my lunch simple: I pick some scallions, fry an egg, make a bowl of clear soup noodles, add some cucumber and pickled vegetables, and then clean up afterward.

After feeding the chickens and ducks, putting down the wine caps, Chen Hong locked the door, took a shower, and took a nap. She had to sleep, as she would have to go into the space to cultivate the land that night, which was too physically demanding.

Chen Hong woke up at 2 p.m. and suddenly remembered that her family needed to get broadband internet installed. She decided not to go to the fields that afternoon and instead go to the city to buy a computer. After washing up and having a cup of tea, Chen Hong put on her hat and drove to the Bohai Shopping Mall in the city.

Chen Hong parked her tricycle in the parking lot at the entrance of the mall, locked it, and entered the mall. Bohai Mall was very large, located in the city center, next to the municipal government building and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and opposite an insurance company and a securities company. This was the most prosperous area in Rongcheng.

Upon entering the first floor, which was a department store, Chen Hong went to the cosmetics counter and bought two bottles of sunscreen and a bottle of lotion for her son. Carrying the groceries, she took the elevator to the second floor, which was filled with electronic products: mobile phones, computers, game consoles, educational devices, cameras, and all sorts of other electronic devices.

Chen Hong bought a domestic computer. The seller came to her home to install the network cable and the machine. The total cost was 4,800 yuan. The seller promised to come to her home to install it the next morning.

The vendor delivered the equipment, network cable, and other accessories directly to Chen Hong's location and assembled it for her. Since Chen Hong didn't know much about it, she chose a brand that was still going strong until 2023, placed an order, paid, left her address and phone number, received the invoice, and then left Bohai Mall.

Looking at the securities company across the street, Chen Hong drove her tricycle to the entrance. After parking and pushing open the door, she was greeted by two young men.

They warmly invited Chen Hong to the reception room, served her a cup of hot tea, and then began to rattle off various stock trading terms, such as buying, selling, closing positions, and establishing new positions.

Throughout the entire conversation, Chen Hong only said one sentence: "I've never bought stocks before, I don't know anything about them, I just want to learn about them."

The two young men were still very enthusiastic and insisted on helping Chen Hong open an account. Chen Hong said that she didn't have any money to buy stocks right now, so there was no need to open an account.

A young man named Wang Ping continued to enthusiastically explain the stock buying process to her, but another young man, seeing that Chen Hong had no intention of buying stocks after all that explanation, probably thought she was just a rural woman and wouldn't become a stock investor no matter how much he talked, so he gave up on her and went to greet new customers at the door.

Chen Hong teased Wang Ping with a smile, "Your enthusiasm makes me feel scared. You might find something to profit from me."

Wang Ping blushed shyly: "Sister, you could say it's profitable. You don't know, my internship is ending in a week. Our company has quotas for intern sales staff. They have to open a certain number of accounts and guide a certain number of clients into the stock market during their internship. I'm still short of a few slots. If I don't meet the quota, I'll be fired."

"Sis, could you help me open an account? Even if you don't buy stocks in the future, you won't suffer any financial loss. Could you just reserve a spot for me? I won't charge you any fees, you won't have to spend a single penny. If you buy or sell stocks under my name in the future, I'll only charge you a 0.1% commission. That's my minimum limit. You should know that the usual commission is 0.2% to 0.3%."

Chen Hong chuckled inwardly. She had heard about the ins and outs of this in her previous life, which was why she pretended not to understand and let the salesperson do their job. The more proactive the salesperson was, the more discounts they would offer, otherwise ordinary people wouldn't be able to get these offers.

Pretending to be unwilling, Chen Hong went through the process of opening an account, binding her bank card, and setting a transaction password with Wang Ping's enthusiastic help. Wang Ping handled all the paperwork and information filling. Chen Hong simply sat in the reception room, enjoying the air conditioning, drinking tea, and signing her name.

Wang Ping also guided Chen Hong through various basic buying and selling operations on the computer.

Seeing how honest this young man was, Chen Hong advised him: "Don't just sit in the company and wait for customers to come to you. Even if you don't charge a commission, who will know? How many people actually come to you on their own? You can do it like an insurance company. You can contact your relatives, friends, and classmates to help you open an account. If they don't buy anything, they can just leave it there. It doesn't cost any money. That way, they can help you meet your targets."
